Snape is not your average good guy, which makes Rowling's work so brilliant. Snape was an asshole to Harry because Harry reminded him of James. You are forgetting that James recklessly saved Snapes life, though Snape didn't see it that way. It's all about point of views. Snap's redeeming quality was love and if you are a fan of Dumbledore you would believe it.
