William the Conqueror defeated the English King in the Major Battle of Hastings and ruled England til his death. The major reason why England has so many stone castles was because of him securing his rule in England.

But that does is nothing to be ashame of, the Normans were truly great Warriors. They made both the French and English their bitch.

It was because of the Normans, the English thought they had a claim to France because England and Most of France used to be one great kingdom. This would be the cause of the 100 Year War (1337-1453) between England and France :)

However, had Harold not had to fight at Stamford Bridge and had a fresh contingent of Huscarles with him, William's army would have been defeated. Indeed, the only reason the Saxons ended up losing was because they charged down the hill prematurely (many of the troops were Serf's without discipline) and inadvertently got caught by the Norman cavalry. As it stood, the Saxons were besting the Normans in the melee.

Question 1 why did in the old times did they were like 30 different uniforms like some had skirts and others with the famous red coat and even some with green or some random color. What made them change uniforms to the puffy hat and all

@229wazup 1: the times, red coats were basic infantry they diddn't really change the "puffy hats" are grenadiers who were a different class, the skirts are called kilts and are the scots, which is traditional in war like the bagpipes for them and the green uniformed soldiers are the irish green jackets, the RIFLES, like in SHARPE.

@229wazup In the 18th Century when the redcoat became famous, soldiers wore a tricorn hat (look it up on google). Soldiers with a bearskin ("puffy hat") are usually a grenadier regiment or they're a Guardsman (elite infantry). Grenadiers wore bearskins so the tricorn didn't get in the way of a good throw, Guards wear them out of tradition and to make themselves seem more intimidating than they already are. Some regiments, like the 95th had green jackets to show they were light infantry

@229wazup simple really...red coats = basic line infantry...the colour of their cuffs and collors and the emblem on there buttons denotes the regiment. Kilts = highlanders, not just scots-i think-Lowlanders wore tartan trousers, they still have a red coat though. Green = riflemen-NOT irish! The "puffy hats" were given to the Grenadier guards as a reward for defeating the Grenadiers of the Old Guard (French) at the Battle of Waterloo-this was the first/last time the Old Guard were ever defeated.

Search the Connaught Rangers (88th regiment of foot) they were an irish regiment famous for their involvment in the peninsular war, they also wore red coats. Remeber we are talking about line infantry when refering to irish and ALL line infantry wore red before Kaki uniforms were introduced in the sudan war. p.s we're talking about "the old times" as the original question put it.

@229wazup the skirts are kilts etc etc as said the royal artilery had navy blue too help hide the carbon from the gunpowder of thier rockets and cannon the puffy hat is because when the grenadiers used to throw grenades they had extreme difficulty putting the musket/rifle sling over thier shoulders because shackos were tall the red coat is a dress uniform now i wear it when im on ceremonial dutys the rifles were green jackets because they were skermishers

@danisuperedition because back in the times of old they would have grenades and throw them at the enemy and thus the grenadier regiments were formed. But nowadays they have changed with modern tactics but remain a ceremonial and elite force.
