you will only suck if you say you do....say you are a guzhenger!!! and you are improving....we should not say we are the worst right? skill can always be improved!
I have a Chinese friend who has Guzheng lessons and this video is brilliant because it introduces me to her ancient and wonderful instrument played by a charming and lovely young woman. It is so natural, and the almost supernatural ending with the wind playing the instrument and Wu Fei marvelling at nature's partnership is lovely. Well done Wu Fei! Thank you.
i also still believe the "mission" mentality could be suicidal in a time of change, and god knows the "new china " (btw that's the self-brainwashing version, mao's actual words were "central gov of the prc" )has experienced lots of changes and they did drown people, i'm sick of thinking about that and i lament anybody needing to go thru that specifically. Having said that best wishes..
That's her belief behind HER MUSIC. If you don't like here music, switch channel. Why keep coming back here to yap about your belief which has nothing to do with anything. I love her music and appreciate her mission mentality. Because she gives, not takes away.
My apology to wufei, my homie (not sure if they still use the word) i lived there till a few yrs ago, i see irrelevant talkings/jokes posted by myself (or the deja-vu-ringu personality).. i think the undiminished devotion you bring along from your childhood could get yourself wherever you need to be. but i wouldn't take back anything about the ideologies,
I'm starting to believe something called dictionary was invented yesterday. you need to send yourself back to English 101 before you utter another word that's too foreign to you. forget about liberalism, that's too much wonderland for you.
oops, you've got to check back after you leave comments; we've got someone very good at spamming here. your verbiage is filled with shitty things like "bring about an artist.. musical instruments being created with intention to create music (lol).. responsibilities of the artist.. instruments capable of sound/expressiveness.. you are limited..." mmm..... yummy yummy
Every musical instrument in the world is created with the utmost intention to create vast music, it is the responsibility of the artist to give much life to the music. Every musical instrument is capable of vast variety of sounds and expressiveness, you are only limited if you stop yourself from the creative process needed to breathe new life into the instrument.
I meant to say Guzheng in the last post. I feel guzheng is not an instrument to be played in the background of a band. It's rather standalone but could be improvised with other modern instruments played in the background. The guzheng sound should be played with subtlety, with pauses to create a feel of sweet sorrow. There should be a feeling of humbleness and sorrow when listening to it.
If you follow this artist and listen to her other works, you will find that she is a very well rounded artist who is extremely capable of giving life to this instrument, and expressing herself and the beauty of the instrument in so many ways. Everyone enjoys music in their own way, just the same way as a musician can express themselves how ever way they feel. If people enjoy it they enjoy it and if they do not enjoy it, then they can change the channel.
Please clarify what you mean by "full potential"? This is the gu zheng, not gu qin. No one has accomplished the full potential of any instrument in the history of the world, this notion of "full potential" suggests a lack of desire to continue to discover even more potentials from within the artist, to bring about greater expressiveness through the instrument.
Great video, so much insight and enthusiasm. Wonderful ending too, just perfect that message of "nature is telling me let me finish".. Thanks for the post. -- Vi An
in may fourth movement chinese people dumped classical chinese and embraced "new culture", in cultural revolution they destroyed all kinds of artifacts..and today we have a girl who wouldn't think twice before she sacrificed her education in "conservatory style" to titillate beijing public with her "free form", and this is what American liberalism is doing to chinese today, with the delay (do you know there are also maoists everywhere around the world now?) Chinese people, you need to wake up!!
What a thing to say, did you think before you typed?! Its not "American liberalism" which brings about an "artist" to feel compelled to "free form" music at all. It is the "natural way" of artists to desire to express themselves in many different and exciting ways!
I don't agree the XXX-ism into the realm of music. Musicians do whatever they feel love to; some try to make new, other try to keep the tradition. McDonald's may be considered modern, and created by American liberalism. People from anywhere in the world may also like its food, and try to make similar things. But that doesn't mean that the traditional restaurants should all be closed. There are also many people who enjoy classical style French cuisine.
Classical training only serves to master your skills and understanding. How you express musically depends on your own spirit and drive to take "risks" and devote to "experiment" with different ways to "open one's mind".. Think people, and let go of your tightly clenched anal muscles, things will pass though more easily I promise!!!
Very interesting and I just bought her CD " A distant youth" on Amazon and it has very beautiful music both traditional and modern.

I feel she has the right attitude but fails to capture the spirit of the guqin - she doesn't bring the guqin to its full potential.
