I want to see it but scared! I now want to see those 30 mins...the fact they turned her into a duck is scary!! Another movie that recently creeped me out to was Eraserhead.
They must've restored the talking ending at some point because the version I got from NetFlix had the "Don't cry, Hans" and all that came before it. However, I really want to see the ending with Hercules singing falsetto.
@MetalBen I got it from NetFlix - the wait was a LOT shorter with them than with Blockbuster. (I'd actually would've had to wait two years to see it through them. It took less than a week with NetFlix.) Plus you can buy it from Amazon for around $14.
This film was fantastic, I strongly urge people to look up the actors involved and check their histories, particularly the 'no limbed' man and Schlitze, they had fascinating lives. :)
The original ending sounded great ! I never did like the ending in the final cut of the movie... This is still the best horror movie that Browning ever made (far better than his overrated "Dracula").
This movie scares/disturbs people because we are all humanity. Everything is put in it's place by the EternalCreator. And except for the grace of EC there go I. It could 've happened to anyone of us but we could only see the world is a blinded view. Most of these have sane minds in disfigured bodies. @xDeepPurpleDreamx yeah im okay with scary movies [not with clowns]i love vampire films and that but im okay with thsie but the barefoot Gen film had me crying cheack it out
the version i have has a different version than all of those. in the one i have, the show Cleopatra as a duck, then hans and his wife meet up and have their conversation. the only thing that's cut out of mine is Hercules singing
@spankyscfw yeah i think thats the ending that made it to dvd Herculese became a Castrato but the ending where Herculese and Cleo walk out the room unharmed never made it to dvd
No, it's not. There are MALE sorpanos. Look up boy sorpanos (who have no achieved puberty), castratos (who are castrated opera singers), and countertenors (natural male sorpanos).
That's no excuse for bad grammar. It's something you should have learned in elementary school. Anyway, a "soprano" is simply a singing voice ranged between C4 and A4. This voice type is NOT exclusive to women at all, because men can soprano as well. See: v=drD3aUs5xKU
I didn't freak out. I didn't understand the answer, you have because it was a fragment and a run-on sentence, and I asked you politely if you repeat that again and you're the one that snapped at me. And, no, a man singing in a sorpano register is a called a "countertenor" or a "sopranist." A "tenor" is different.
The first endin is fuckin awsome. Hurcules or whatever. gets his balls cut off and the one blonde chick gets her legs cut off and one eye tore out and tounge cut off. its pretty fuckin brutal. Its been banned tho. i wanna see it. just to see how bad it is. O_O
I think that it would be really awesome if they made a remake of this movie, but they would probably just use cgi to make the freaks look more like monsters...still, it's an idea
There is nothing more annoying when you get a ten minute CGI based scene in a otherwise good movie... Yes its VERY VERY close to reality... but its not.
Its like getting 10000 dollars, but knowing that the money is fake. You look at the money and say: OMG it looks real! But deep inside you know its fake because... it just does NOT look completely real!
Made her pregnant? They might just as well done that =P. Maybe they cut her legs off, fucked up her voice strings, lobotomized her brain and cut her tongue out. I seriously do not think that she and the guy are the villains in the movie. I mean, yeah id putt he woman in jail, in worse case scenario even killed her. But Fuck! No one deserves what these guys got turned into! I mean the freaks are that way, but they where born that way, "taking" revenge upon these guys is just overkill.
I think the fact they go overboard is great... because that is precisely what it's supposed to do. It's supposed to unnerve the audience. This is worst-case scenario when freaks are pushed too far. ;-) It's unnerving, even by today's standards, IMO. I could only imagine seeing it in 1932. I would've walked out of the theater, my jaw dropped...speechless.
Honestly, this is even more freaking out than anything now a days, we live in the age of special effects, no longer do people seek out great scripts of unbelievable stories made so well that you actually believe them until you wake up from a nightmare and tell yourself: Easy there, it was just a movie...
Scarface, the last movie that had a script so full fledged and yet easy and understandable, now? Meh, realistic monsters and crap, but its always the same =P
I think all the 'freaks' did was cut off her feet and mess with her face/vocal cords, etc... People who run freak-shows advertise people as things they are not (like maybe a bald person with bad skin is "the lizard-man") so I'm sure she was just dressed up in the duck suit, since she was already quacking like one. I like it that it's left to the imagination a bit.
I've got the Freaks DVD, It would be interesting if any of these alternate endings were still in existence in some lost film cannister somewhere although that's pretty unlikely considering the short life of film stock from the 1930s which would likely have disintegrated by now.
That "Don't cry, Hans... Don't cry... I love you" was sampled in a Sheer Terror song. I had no idea what it was from and I came upon this by chance. Weird...
Whenever I've seen this movie, starting in the college circuit in the 1970s, it's had the first ending shown - I can't imagine why they'd make further cuts from this warm, poignant scene (but I would love to see the 30-odd minutes of cut footage)
well i think those 30 minutes included, comedic scenes cut out and prince randian rolling up his cigar. The odd footage could have possibly last 10 minutes to my knowledge.
Wow! That's cool to know. When I first watched this movie when I was 14 or so, I was enthralled by it. My favorite movie of all time. I loved Hans:( Stupid Olga. She deserved her fate. Such a bitch!
Cleopatra and her evil lover deserved to be punished, but that scene of her as an almost mindless duck person --- that seems beyond cruel and truly terrifying.
There was a "little" actress who was put to death in one of Hitler's crematoriams. I don't know if her stature was as much a problem for him as the problem that he had with anyone who wasn't a perfect Aryan, but because he saw a photograph of her in a publicity photo sitting on Industrialist J.P. Morgan's lap!
I'm not crazy about any of them, but the first ending works best. I liked to see the little dudes re-united. If Freaks was a true horror film (I don't think it is), ending 3 would work best--but no film should end with a shot of a legless duck woman. Ack!

And the back cover had a litle guy offering his hat (or asking money) to a blonde womasn that dressed fancy (just like olga) never tought of the similaritys.
They tore out her tongue and chopped off her legs. So she became a "human duck" which is bound to waddle around on her stumps and to make silly "wak wak" noises without her tongue.

They tore out her tongue and chopped off her legs. So she became a "human duck" which is bound to waddle around on her stumps and to make silly "wak wak" noises without her tongue.
