People should understand that others will disagree, and that nothing is black and white. A person raised in this lifestyle is likely to share the same principles as the people he was raised with, although his intentions would remain honorable. It's survival, defiance. And in it's way, that makes them more honorable than most of the other people in the world.

But, today we understand it to a certain extent, and can treat the symptoms much better. In the 1940's-50's they didn't even know what it was, they called it Shell Shock and figured the men would snap out of it. Think about this though, we lost 5,000 in Iraq over 10 years. A sad number, no doubt, but in WWII they crawled over that many bodies on D-Day alone!
