  • Please help!! what is that liquid that you use to clean the square thingys on 5:53

  • When you clean it the chips. Is it just the tops or do you also have to clean the sides of the chips?

  • @CallOfDutyHero123 Yes to prevent the old thermal compound from melting on to the traces or on connections. Use only alcohol, or recommended cleaners. Hope that helps you out. :D

  • I believe he is saying isopropanol aka rubbing alcohol.

  • whats acid proponal or whatever its called that he rubbed

  • iv taken my PS3 apart and found one of the bga's has come unstuck from the mother board and is stuck to the top side (fan)

    what should i do?

  • thx for this video and your time!

i fix my ps3 60gb in a hour with your help!

  • 6:50,

can you use nail polisher instead of what he uses?

  • someone give me money to buy a new one :)

  • I meant Gilksy, !!

  • Hi jilksy, I'm from Malvern too, I am having trouble with my ps3 and was wondering if you would have a look at it for a price? Would be much appreciated, can get me on here or my email is chrisnpilch@hotmail.co.uk

    Cheers

  • Here's my honest opinion about the consoles.

    PS3 > 360 (as a console)

However XBL > PSN by a mile.

  • @TriGGA593 i should hope so if you have to pay for it monthly lol

  • @nofear31126 I know. The best thing about it is 8 person cross game chat, I use it everyday and it's very convenient. Also, I don't pay for it monthly, I pay $40/year because I go to amazon and I find 12 month cards for cheaper. It's really a shame how PSN won't be getting this feature on the PS3 it's really nice to have.

  • @TriGGA593 well PSN is free so i aint complaining

  • nimm doch gleich Schleifpapier um die DIE zu säubern...

  • this method worked perfect for me! note to everyone make sure the heat gun is hot enough! i really hope it lasts

  • make sure you don't loose any of those heat pads? pft half of mine are missing anyway when I first took it apart. got 1 big 1 and 3 little 1's

  • is that alcohol your using?

  • Do you have to use a heat gun? Can you just use a thermal compound

  • You can play forza motorsports on xbox360 and not ps3, and it's way better than gran turismo. It's the only reason I have xbox!

And the speaking from experience, it's much easier to fix an xbox, and the last time I had to fix my xbox was 2 years ago, stupid ps3 needs fixing about every month or two.. It's not really worth it to me anymore..

  • @Piffy617 and halo!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Now I know why Sony charge $150 to fix. So many things to unscrew and take off.

  • @014RED No, they just saw the first part and said, "Umm, this is harder than I thought."

  • @014RED More like 500k people saw how much shit you need to do and was like "fuck this I'll just pay someone else to do it"

  • What happens @ 3:57 ? It skips, did I miss anything?

  • I have repaired two using these videos for instructions and working on a third now. The first one I repaired about two years ago and it still works fine being played on almost a daily basis. Thank you Gilksy!

  • the person who make the video is a genious!

  • list of what i need to do this...pls gil

  • Yeah, that's a worry....I think i'll just pay to get it fixed, that way I can at least blame someone else if it messes up.

  • IT WORKED !!! AWESOME !!!

  • this is solution is not stable, i dont suggest you guys to this, what i suggest is reballing, but it requires high quality equipments and techical knowledge.

  • @014RED lol

  • @014RED Over 1 million saw the first video but the remaining felt it was to complicated, hence disregarding the remaining video's!!!

  • Does anyone else see the breastfeeding.... at 8. video on the side? lol

    and Xbox sux nuts!

  • @o0Beau0o maybe the kid got board of waiting for mum or dad to fix the ps3, well you gotta play on something

  • is there a way of doing this without taking everything apart

  • @ArMY4NT no.

  • @ArMY4NT fat chance unless your a miracle technician

  • Got some Antec Silver, same stuff as Arctic, instructions say never use citrus based solvents to clean the heatsink and cpu. Why is that?

  • Can I just put new thermal paste without using a heatgun?

  • @Mzakhri no because you need to melt the parts that were cracked during the over heating and the heat gun would melt them back together but at the same time you don't want to do it for too long as you might fry the motherboard and then you would be screwed

  • @014RED Whats even stranger is that only 250,000 people viewed the third part. Wow, watch two movies and just give up on the good part?

  • Figured it out. Mine came apart in a slightly different order.

  • After removing the four fan assembly screws my fan assembly is still firmly attached. Does this mean that the heat sink compound is still intact? FYI my take down was slightly easier than yours.

  • this is hell compared to fixing a 360

  • FUCK THESE SCREWS AHHHHHH FUCK THE PLAYSTATION OUT THE WINDOW YOU GO

  • The only things I've ever opened and fixed were a VCR and a PS2. The VCR worked fine until DVD made it obsolete. The PS2 worked for a week then completely died. I'm not an electrician-y genius, but I opened them up and stared for a while and did random things and they worked again.

  • Thanks Gilksy, i found your guide to be really helpful and through checking the heatsink pads there was actually one missing! Great videos and thanks again.

  • Great tutorial! Used it to fix my ylod. Thank you gilsky!

    Sony, go fk yourself!

  • @carmaster65

    Sony MADE that masterpiece!!!

  • CPU Cooler ? what did u use ?

  • All people who are bigging up the xbox and the wii... just stfu.

@justinsn95: of course the ps3 is a much more powerful system. And yet I believe 60% of those consoles failed. Theres obviously much more hardware in the PS3 as its all packed tightly then the little xbox, so your biting off a Tbone rather then some bacon rashers. Yes fk you xbox fans your console is comparable to bacon rashers.

  • @redslzy both consoles are 7 years out of date, neither can hold a candle to a pc and don't get me started on the wii that's just a piece of shit.

  • @M4rkC93 Are you retarded? The PS3 Can still beat all except the very best PCs out there. And LIKE YOU SAID ITS STILL 7 YEARS OUT OF DATE? HUH? Go have a steak mate.

  • @redslzy go have a steak what? but anyway, i didn't want to get into an argument just pointing out that your not so high and mighty, but here goes, the ps3 has no games that cannot be run on the xbox and the xbox has nothing the ps3 cant run, ok fair enough the ps3 has blu rays and some games the xbox has to split into multiple disks, and the very best pc's out there? no i have a pc that would not be considered the very best yet its still way better than an xbox and ps3 (i have xbox and ps3)

  • @M4rkC93 Have a STEAK BE A FUCKING MAN.

Umm.. ok you find me a pc with 3.2 ghz with 8 microprocessing engines? What I find most laughable is the multi disc games that you play on xbox... wtf? Thats what we had on playstation 1. Granted the xbox isnt bad, but theres heaps of games you can play on ps3 that you can't play on xbox, find me a game that you can play on xbox but you cant play on ps3 (excluding the kinect) I have to admit we got fucked on that one.

  • @M4rkC93 another thing people xseem to champion on the xbox is its easy user interface? I'm like what the fuck? Xbox is fucking complicated as balls and the background makes me feel on an acid trip? Ps3 is so much easier, press triangle you get a menu, xmb is straightforward, if your stupid to think that music has videos or that internet has system settings your the idiot. I'm not saying you said this, I just know its a thing people say the xbox has over the ps3.

  • @redslzy Whats wrong with bacon rashers

  • @redslzy The XBOX has superior hardware. The only reason the PS3 is capable of higher graphics quality is due to the fact that they have BLURAY.

  • Even the Nintendo Wii gives less problems

  • Thanks gilksy1...I followed your guide here and my YLOD is no more. Works fine and tested it on Call of the Dead with 4 people into the late 20's. That is a true test there and it worked like a charm.

Just a side note to other people testing this..When I was finished, I did not hook up the networking card good enough, so I was unable to get online and had to open her back up and tighten the ribbons. So, just be careful there and make sure everything is snug,,or you will get the network error

  • i followed all the steps to the t and reconnected everything but my ps3 now does not turn on. does anyone know why this is and how to fix it?

  • @Jerico1830 make sure u connect everything together properly i had dis problem also but when i disassemble and reassemble it work like a charm

  • Question: what if i switch the motor board of the ps3 with YLOD, with a ps3 that has a working motor board? Will it work?

  • very good ,,, i done it and fixed my ps3,,, well done ,,,thanks

  • very good ,,, i done it and fixed my ps3,,, well done ,,,thanks

  • Help!! I have the 80gb one of the first ps3s...My heat sink compound that connected to the fan and the metal..Built in with it you could say..Wat do I Do?

  • What did you squirt the alcohol onto? Plain cloth?

  • I stripped the blue screw for the hard-drive...

do I NEED to remove it?

  • @MrZiMaDo Oh what. never mind...:P

  • So easy to get into the ps3 (much harder on the 360) but god, it is complicated to actually reach the core of the ps3 lol!

  • can not enough thermal paste cause ylod?

  • @booguh2k7 Yes it absolutely can. The best type of thermal compound to use is Arctic Silver 5. Use this only on the GPU and CPU (the chips that Gilky cleans in this video with rubbing alcohol)...you'll want enough compound on each chip so you can spread it evenly, and you only want enough to spread a thin layer that covers each chip. Spread it with an old credit card or something else that's plastic, flat and firm yet bendable. Don't use too much compound because that can cause shorts in system

  • @ObiWanGinobiliTopFan Thanks homie

  • do i need to clean the heat sinc of the fan?

  • the two screws on the HDD bay are small, what size phillips head screwdriver did you use?

  • the easier way is to do this /watch?v=xHMW7XR59Fw no offense but this is way to dangerous to mechanic noobs like me

  • 5:50

    Is that Wather?

  • 5:50

    Is that Wather?

  • hey is there anything than substitutes for the isopropyl????

  • @Colacious Alcohol from the chemist. You can use vodka if you're stuck

  • @Colacious It is rubbing alcohol, you find it next to the bandaids and peroxide.

  • I love how your not American

  • Is the battery at 3:53 important? cause the wire kinda snapped when i tryed to pull it out O_o

  • @PlayerVersusMe Same here. The actual small port box came out with it. I tried putting the wires in (tested and tried both) but still get the no clock charge. I have to manually put it in everytime the ps3 is shut from plug.

Althought this is still not enough to play demos or use the downloaded content, they require internet sync.. time in order to function.

Is a real pain, especially when the internet connection gets DSN errors.

  • dammm ps3 is good but xbox is much better in graphicss lol....

  • yaa so i didnt listen and lost the heat sink pads...any chance i can i get new ones. and does anyone know if theyre in an xbox or 360?

  • why the fuck is the mobo encased in that metal frame, adds heat up the ass i bet

  • this happens to 1 out of every 5 ps3s its ridiculous

  • its pritty stupid leaving the ribbons on in the first place i just take mine off...

  • i got newer 80 gb and the inside is different?

  • Just "fixed" my PS3 for the 3rd time. It still takes me 3 hours but it gets the job done for at least a lil while. And when get a lil confused I refer to Mr. gilksy. Each time I have more and more extra screws... hahah

  • @SkozloNYC

fixing mine for the third time also.why does it continue? you would think if its fixed once it should be good for a couple of years, right? right now i am alittle pissed with sony. i will NEVER go xbox. SONY TILL I DIE!!!!!!!!hahahahahha

  • @franconegonzalez Got a good deal a new slim, so I caved in. This is like putting a band aid on a bullet wound. My older fat boy still works but I got tired of having to repair it. The novelty of me being technical wore off... quick. Gonna try and see if I can slide one passed Game Stop with the older one. Hopefully they won't know I hacked mine... would love to get 100 clams for the piece of shit.

  • Ive herd changing the thermal pads helps the fix last longer, anyone know where I can get ones that are the same size as the ones in the PS3 and are good quality

  • @04ayasin the thermal pads aren't even being used anymore I heard. I looked around for them here in NYC and no one had them or would supply them (a small computer store refused because he wanted me to pay him to fix it). As long as you have something on the board, you're fine.

  • Why you dont try to change burned Cpu to new its easily but efectivily it works

  • ''heatsink paste'' lol it's called thermal compound;) good vid btw

  • ''heatsink paste'' lol it's called thermal compound;)

  • @robinjo26 it's also called thermal paste and heatsink paste...

  • is it important to remove the hard drive? pls reply

  • lol one million screws

  • errr just lift the fan unit off... lol are u sure, mines screwed in from the inside i have to remove the mobo to even get to hte screws... are u sure we are looking at hte same ps3?

  • can u use alcohole to clean the cpu ang gpu anser asap

  • can u use alcohole to clean the cpu ang gpu

  • Thanks so much for these videos man. You're helping a lot of people out and saving them their hard earned cash.

    Cheers from the US!

  • i'm at the part where you unscrew the hard drive. i accidentally wore out the screws. how can i still extract them. PLEASE I NEED HELP WITH THIS, DO I NEED TO TAKE IT SOMEWHERE!!!

  • @kingseyi Do you still have the blue screw intact ? If so don't worry, I think you just need the blue screw in. If that isn't the case just screw the smaller ones in by turning the head with a small pair of pliers. I stripped one of those damn super soft screws and had to do it this way. It's difficult and takes MUCH longer but it's still possible !

  • After reflowing my ps3 2 times, the second time I got ylod within 5 minutes.

I took my bluray drive out and the ylod went away, I put it back in and it came back.

I tried this several times and to the same effect. I replaced my bluray and it was back to normal.

Also, to get my fifa game back, I unscrewed the top panel, lifted the centre magnet off and eased the game out of the drive, simple.

  • Awesome demo on the ps3 how to fix the YLOD! I would like to say you did pretty good job on it and it was very professional! You seem to know what your doing and that makes people happy because now you teach them on how to fix the YLOD on the ps3! Awesome job Gilksy!!!!! A+++

  • How can I make or get those heat sink pads at 5:01 ? When I got there I was missing those pieces!

  • what is the stuff u use to clean? isoproganoff? i dont understand

  • @FigliaJ Its a complicated word for rubbing alcohol.

  • @batman1538 hahahahahaha right 1 bro nice alcohol the easy word

  • i dont think you had to take the front and back plates

  • will this work 100percent of the time if i follow your guide complely

  • So check this out, I got to this part and I noticed at 5:06 that there are 5 heat sinc pads on the board. I seem to have only 3. So maybe that has something to do with overheating. Mine was even brought in for a redux as of 2008 when the bluray failed, so when fixing it they must not have replaced the two missing pads. Off to the store!!

  • ahhh this is an effort. going to finish in the morning :S

  • this thing has wayy to many screws

  • Comment removed

  • @1detroitryder i no i couldnt get all of em back in

  • @1detroitryder word up.

  • IT WORKED!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! time to data transfer lol

  • Isopropyl? where do i get that?

  • @j1mb4rt0n Rubbing alcohol works.

  • Man... the Xbox is so much less trouble to tear into than this thing.

  • @justinsn95 YUP SO TRUE I GUESS THAT'S ONE OF SONY'S METHOD TO GET OUR MONEY WASTED

  • @justinsn95 u dont have to do this as commonly with a ps3

  • @justinsn95 Thats because the three-sixty is just 4 LED's, and a PS3 shoved inside of it.

  • @justinsn95 yup xbox is plane and simple

PS3 is more advanced and complicated

  • @hovik96ers Foxconn, the company you're referring to in Taiwan, make Nintendo Wii's, XBOX360's, PS3's, iPhones and iPads.

  • @hovik96ers Foxconn, the company you're referring to in Taiwan, make Nintendo Wii's, XBOX360's, PS3's, iPhones and iPads.

  • @justinsn95 Because the xbox was built by the Cheapest company in Taiwan. Sony actually makes their products last lol.

  • @pinball0705 lol, aint that the truth

  • @justinsn95 yea but RROD is unfixable :)

  • @justinsn95 Sometimes manufacturers deliberately make it a pain so you are "discouraged" to open it up :)

  • @justinsn95 yea because ps3 is way more secured than xbox

  • @justinsn95 thats because it was built to fail.

  • @justinsn95 just think the ps3 is worth the hassle then the xbox ahha

  • @justinsn95 Cus' Xbox is waaaaaaaaaay more prone to crash than PS3!

  • @justinsn95 i actually heard the xbox was harder but i cant speak from experience the ps3 is very easy to take apart the only thing is youll need to use a guide or label the parts

  • @dasin7 actually xbox is less complicated if you know what you're doing. however everyone i know with an xbox has had to take it apart 3+ times before i'm just now having to take apart my ps3 for the first time since they came out.

  • @skater7744 yea same here man mine lasted about 4 yrs just looking at my xbox now i cant tell I just misunderstood the guy who fixed a few he said it was hard his first time getting in to it but yea he said the same thing ps3 is a bit more complicated but its no very hard to fix i successfully fixed ylod but my bluray is shot from physical damage

  • @justinsn95 probably because they expected it to crap out.

    just saying

  • Is that a napkin you're using or is that a special type of cloth?

  • can u wipe the sinks witout the alcohol?

  • My ps3 didn't have the 2 large heatsinks from 5:05 on those chips, it is a 60gb version, was anybody else's like that? I have the 5 other smaller heatsinks but not those 2 big ones... is that just this model? should I try to buy those somewhere?

  • @parsonsproject2 Interesting. I just opened mine to find the 2 big sinks but I'm missing two of the small plastic like ones on the board. Crapy Sony repairs.

  • ii dont have a heat gun so what can i use instead?

  • Comment removed

  • can I use acetone or regular alcohol instead of isopropanol?

  • @Tatazildo There's no such thing as regular alcohol, the term "alcohol" simply defines a group of organic chemicals with a hydroxyl group blah blah, I'm not going to get into a chemistry lesson, but all you need to know is that isopropyl alcohol is more commonly referred to as "rubbing alcohol". If you have rubbing alcohol, you have isopropyl alcohol. If you don't have it, you could probably get it from your local corner drug or grocery store. I would not recommend acetone. Hope I helped :)

  • @Tatazildo Actually I'll clarify further, I shouldn't have said that all rubbing alcohols are isopropyl. Although it is more rare, ethyl alcohol is sometimes sold as rubbing alcohol. It'll say on the front of the bottle you have, just give the label a quick check :)

  • whats the "water" you using there again and what does is do ? :D

  • I am thinking of attempting this to have a spare PS3 for cheap, but the biggest problem is I am useless when first trying to fix something plus the cost of a heat gun etc.

I can build PC's etc so guess this isnt much harder just wanted your opinion.
