Where are the egg shells? Or, did each baby emerge from its egg, and then fail to dig its way out of the nest? Something doesn't seem right! Seems like there should have been evidence of egg shells in the immediate proximity of the hatchlings.
@Steevee14 lol, something doesn't seem right? hahaha. Good question. There are two things that happen to the shells when they are not present. Both are a result of the babies being in the dirt for some time. First, the egg shells are very calcium and protein rich and the babies eat them to survive. Second, they simply decompose and nature and other microscopic organisms eat the shells (termites too). Hope that helps!
Ok i was wondering if you have any babies or smaller turtles? i would love to get some more turtles but i dont want to buy from a store because i want to be sure they are coming from some where good please get back to me im willing to pay for shipping or anything.
God when I was his age, any talk about possible dead baby turtles would have put me in tears.....But that kid's all like, no big deal, just doin turtle stuff.
@CardShark1015 lol, yeah I can see your point. My kids have been living with these great creatures for years and understand the circle of life and I don't try to sugar coat things that are natural. The fact is, the survival rate for these babies is extremely low, and this was really a good year for the baby turtles. It's still sad to them, but they understand how it all works so they are okay with it. thanks for the comment!
@MrWILDHULK1 Great question! When the mother lays eggs, she digs a deep hole and using her back legs, creates a circular hole/nest underground, which she uses water and her own urine (i know it sounds gross but works!) to form a sort of seal on the walls of the nest that protect it from being smashed in. When they eggs are then laid into the hole/nest they have room and air to breathe and hatch from their eggs.
@Ohzziyi I have about 12 large red sliders in the pond that is located right next to the nesting area. Don't know which one was the mother, as it could have been from several females that lay eggs there.
@JKWotawa LOL, those turtless are so beautiful, i love your set up. I would appreciate it if you watched my vids and had any pointers on how to set up my new 75 gallon tank. Thanks
@Cappy5738 didnt watch your vid yet, but will. Basically, your tank needs to be near full sun, even if through a window. Turtles and tortoises need full sun for their shells to develop properly, that's the biggest mistake I see with people and turtles. They were meant to be outside, not inside in an aquarium. Having said that, shallow water, make sure they have a place to crawl out on land and rest, and have clean filtered water. Feed them properly, Reptomin, live crickets, etc. :)
I dont know if im close or not nut I live in Dallas TX and if you can ship them over that would be great and wat is the price and I want 2 to 3 baby red eared sliders 2 males and 1 female if u can tell their sex if not just give 2 but I do not want one at this time i will email u when im intrested and I would like to know about all the imformation in my email so u can email me at tiffn25@yahoo.com
@ApeX2411 Thanks, and that is a fair question. Normally I would not dig them out and would not encourage anyone to do so. I do a once a year cleaning in the pond and in the land area where the turtles lay eggs. As I was cleaning the area, I noticed a hole where rains had recently caused some loosening of the dirt. As the hatching season had already been over for about 3 months, I thought there might be some babies left that needed rescuing. I was right...thanks for the message!
@123beychamp , I have about 8 babies that need homes. I'm in Moorpark, CA anyone who is interested and can provide a good home and can come get them, they can adopt them.
Okay, the date is 12/22/2011, and at this time I have about 20 babies that need homes. I'm in Moorpark, CA, so if you are within driving distance, you can inquire about the babies. None will be sent via mail, it won't happen so please don't ask...
Okay, they are a billion, no, a trillion dollars each, and I have 12 available for you at, as you say, "your price", so it is a total of $12 trillion payable to Turtle Town, Inc., will deliver upon receipt of money and legal size of turtle is reached...
nice job man u should keep them till they get bigger though which they probably are but its illegal to sell them that size cause they cause salmonella disease to small children thats why most pet store's dont sell them
@DynamiteStudios09 Yes, you are so right! They have to be 4" minimum to either give away or sell. The salmonella scare is due to Asian black market who brings millions over as tiny babies because they can ship them easier, but due to bad conditions during shipping, the disease spreads and gets to all. But they don't just get born with Salmonella, it happens in large quantities of dying and diseased turtles that are being brought in and sold illegally. That's why they put a ban on it...
@JKWotawa yah i got mine a courtday festival two weeks ago his set up was bad, he was the size of a quarter in a carry on tank with little colored rocks he can swallow with water like only up to his knees, and his water was freezing cold, then the next day went to the pet store bought him a bigger tank with bigger rocks and enough room for a small platform and to swim, when we asked the lady she said they were illegal to sell, and i figured that cause at court day there's a lot of pple who sell.
@bluemooncandy lol, the red stripe on their necks are a dead give away...they are funny as babies though, they sometimes try to bite you, but it's like feeling a small pinch.
to all people asking for turtles. This video was done about three years ago and all these babies are gone. Currently, we have one baby turtle, but legally they cannot be adopted, given away, or sold until they are at least four inches long. If you want a turtle, call a turtle rescue operation near your home, I'm sure there are many. I'm in Southern California and hope to soon be opening a giant rescue operation called Turtle town, where you can all visit and adopt if you want.
so you give them away? are they hatched by ur home? that is so wonderful how you care for them like this!!!! thank you and good karma's coming you way!!!
so you give them away? are they hatched by ur home? that is so wonderful how you care for them like this!!!! thank you and good karma's coming you way!!!
Don't dig them up, they cannot be moved! Make sure the soil stays a bit moist, but not wet. Don't even think about checking them before four months is up. They will crawl out on their own.
did u just leave them in the soil for three months? my RES just laid some eggs in a box filled with damp soil. is tat ok if i just leave them in the soil for 3 months, or dig them out once a week to check whether thr r any rotten/infected eggs?
@skaterdood901 this was a couple years ago. They have all since been adopted out. That was a big year for production for some reason. For example, when I dug up the area this year, I only found three babies. Weather, and landing area are all factors. I noticed more roots this year which inhibited growth of the eggs and crushed most of them. All part of nature.
@BigCizzle1 , ya it would seem that way. Their shells are very soft and they can actually get nutrition from eating their own shells, but for the most part, once they hatch they still have a bit of a protein sack attached to the middle of the underside of their shell that is much like an embelical cord and they get fed from that for quite a while as well. In addition, they can totally last a long long time without food. They are very adaptable. Thanks for the note.
That's a great question! the nests are practically impossible to find in the wild. Although Red Sliders are not native or "wild", many people dump them in lakes or ponds because they can't care for them when they get larger, They will usually lay near the bank of the water source. I have mine in an isolated area, so I know where to dig. If you want to find some, start looking near the edges of ponds where turtles are living, around August through October, thats when they hatch and go to h2o
lol. Poacher, that's funny! This is in my back yard in California where I have my turtle pond and this is the land that they go onto to lay eggs. Water turtles can not be given away or sold unless they are at least 4 inches long. I just adopted out seven that were hatched last year. It takes about a year or so in healthy conditions to get them big enough to give away. Right now, I don't have any...with the exception of about a dozen full grown red sliders about a foot long each. thanks
@johnnyfisalive First, if a turtle is old enough to become pregnant, they should not be in a tank, not trying to hate or anything, but they should be in a place that they can lay eggs at their leisure. They tend to have to be a bit more comfortable with their surroundings. Give your turtle a place to lay eggs freely on land, with some sand and dirt so they can dig easily. Even a small plastic pool protected by predators will suffice temporarily. Good luck! Support Turtle Town please!!
@SteveasourusRex GThey all survived. We recently gave the last seven away to two different homes, they were all over four inches. Thanks and please support Turtle Town, Inc.
@paperfreak1000 sorry, the last of them, all seven, went to two different homes just recently. They were all over four inches long and beautiful. Check back after April.
Respond to this video. live in Southern California and just adopted out the last seven of these beautiful little healthy baby sliders all over four inches long. Check back in spring, but not many babies this year due mainly to weather conditions, and a lot of natural inhibitors such as weather and other turtle disturbances within same nesting areas. Weather was colder this year and turtles were a bit more stupid, they really were! They dug up a lot of the same real estate..bummer.
@h8hax : You didn't watch the entire video did you? They all survived. The harder part if for them to survive to adulthood, as when they are the size of a quarter, especially in the wild, they get picked off by all kinds of animals, fish, birds, and especially raccoons. But as for the dig, they all did just fine. Thanks for watching.
usually the babies come out on their own, so you really have to look for first signs of actual baby turtles. Another clue is a small hole in an area that is normally flat. Lastly, dig up an area (slowly and gently), that you think may be an area where your turtle has nested. In my case, the area is enclosed and fenced so I know exactly where they nest. If you're trying to find a nest in a yard or some open area, it's just about impossible...
Where are the egg shells? Or, did each baby emerge from its egg, and then fail to dig its way out of the nest? Something doesn't seem right! Seems like there should have been evidence of egg shells in the immediate proximity of the hatchlings.

Check back in spring, but not many babies this year due mainly to weather conditions, and a lot of natural inhibitors such as weather and other turtle disturbances within same nesting areas. Weather was colder this year and turtles were a bit more stupid, they really were! They dug up a lot of the same real estate..bummer.

aw i think alot of them died :< im guessing it was to hard for them to get out by themselves?
