baby seals do drink their mothers milk up until they are about 12 days old.
then their mothers leave their babies and never come back.
baby seals don't know how to swim or catch their own food until they are around 25 days old.
up to 30% of baby harp seals don't survive their first year, mainly due to the long period of time they are defenseless and helpless as infants, and because it takes such a long time for them to become proficient swimmers.
FOR THE RECORD: the scientific community has concluded that the cause of the depletion of fish stocks off canada's east coast is human over-fishing. blaming seals for disappearing fish is a convenient way for the fishing industry to divert attention from its irresponsible and environmentally destructive practices. harp seals, who are the primary target of the hunt, eat many different species, only 3 percent of a harp seal's diet is commercially fished cod, and they also eat many cod predators.
Wouldn't be good business if people didn't buy the skins!? When consumers wake up to their inherent responsibility to buy products that support and promote a ecosystem as opposed to degrading it, we won't have this problem, until then the best you'll accomplish by outlawing it (if it isn't already) is push it into the black market. Problem solved right!? I mean out of sight out of mind! People need to wake up individually, and that is entirely a personal effort!

sometimes the seals are shot, but that "method" isn't preferred because pelt/skin buyers deduct money for every bullet hole in the seal's skin.
