Muslims had to pay their own tax, non-muslims payed more(the jizya), since they were being protected by a state with a religion different from there own, something that was unheard of in those times.

Those who converted were coerced to, in order not to live the live the existence of a 2nd class citizen. The tax you refer to is the infamous Jizya, which is the equivalent of a protection racket. The spread of Islam to Europe was only halted in the 8th century when the Frankish King Charles the Hammer handed the muslims their asses at Tours. Moral code...lol
