The truth is, there ARE ignorant people out there. Not only Joy Behar. You can teach people the correct way without calling them morons and idiots in the process. It's a GOOD thing that on national television, someone is shown to be ignorant and at the same time is willing to learn the correct term. Terms change as time progresses and nobody knows the correct way of describing EVERY disability or disease. People are getting overly defensive on Marlee's part when it's not necessary.
It must be hard for the translator to relay these kind of things, not just due to the content, but also for having to give what she is saying justice.

@Boyonspace Actually, a LOT I'd say the majority of hearing people are afraid to say the word "Deaf". Everytime I tell someone I'm deaf and we get to talking. They'll come back and ask "So, when did you become 'hearing impaired' or 'having hearing problems' or 'lose the ability to hear' etc...". Deaf is so hard for hearing people to say at times. I think they know each other well and that Marlee is generally happy with the way he interprets. If I had not heard Marlee talk about him before, I would have had the same opinion as you, though.

if you are deaf, you (this is what they supposed) can read Marlee's signs, and if you're hearing, then you should have no problem with subtitles at all.

I mean, they jokingly touch on the fact that she is paying her interpreter to do the speaking for her, but she shouldn't have to speak anyway. With an interpreter readily available and today's culture more able to provide subtitles for just about any language, why should she have to use, in essence, her second language?

That would be like me trying to force you to speak in a language you don't know very well just because it would be EASIER for me. That interpreter is not very professional. He answered questions for Marlee several times. Like when the interviewer asked what the PC. term was for "non hearing" people- the interpreter answered the question before he even interpreted the message, then caught himself and caught her up.
@PersonOfBook people who are in the Deaf community are given name signs by other Deaf people. If someone does not have a name sign, their name is fingerspelled.

@maracuja26 She's a little rough yes, but honestly how many times have you heard some hearing person Deaf Community say hearing impaired and not know they're being offensive? At least she DID ask, I'd rather someone clueless ask me instead of just assume, then they aren't ignorant anymore. She's interviewing about Marlee's book I'll Scream Later, comfortable or not that's the kind of questions she had to ask. As far as referring to her as girl, Joy is kindof old, Marlee is young comparatively?

OMG I feel so bad for her. Poor woman. She is inspirational though, with all that she has accomplished. The Oscar win, and her career. The interpreter is amazing! I want him to teach me sign language.

@Bayern1291 She prefers to sign and, really, why SHOULD she speak? I mean, they jokingly touch on the fact that she is paying her interpreter to do the speaking for her, but she shouldn't have to speak anyway. With an interpreter readily available and today's culture more able to provide subtitles for just about any language, why should she have to use, in essence, her second language?
I love that she is so true to hersefl.

@Bayern1291 easier for you, maybe, but not her. She's deaf and it is kind of offensive to expect her to vocalize. That would be like me trying to force you to speak in a language you don't know very well just because it would be EASIER for me. Its not like she's asking you to know ASL - that's why Jack is there to interpret, to make it work for all parties involved.

Is it just me or did it seem like Joy Behar was talking down to Marlee? Always calling her a "good girl, a very nice girl" She's a woman for crying out loud! And has probably experienced more hardships (and overcome them) than Behar ever has. (The interpreter was great, too!)

@clover13x a CODA is a Child of Deaf Adults so it most likely that ASL was his first language, its not different from interpreting its just his natural, first language

That interpreter is not very professional. He answered questions for Marlee several times. Like when the interviewer asked what the PC. term was for "non hearing" people- the interpreter answered the question before he even interpreted the message, then caught himself and caught her up.

@PersonOfBook people who are in the Deaf community are given name signs by other Deaf people. If someone does not have a name sign, their name is fingerspelled.

@ruantengyi why would you feel sorry for them? it seems to me that the Deaf community gets along and in fact thrives because of deafness. just because they dont speak and use a different way of communicating doesnt make them any less of a person. yes, this horrible thing happened to her in her childhood but i doubt she or any other deaf person wishes people to feel sorry for something that they probably wouldnt want to reverse even if they could.

Why do you want to help her? Marlee is a fully capable and accomplished woman.
Deafness isn't so much a disability as it is a communication barrier ..
I'd never consider for one second calling my fiancee handicap, or any of my friends, they're all professional highly qualified people
