Here is a scientific article stating all the benefits of exercising before you eat when compared to athletes who eat before they exercise. Not only does it burn more fat, but also improves muscle condition. As I stated, it is what the human body is designed for so it should come as no surprise:
J Appl Physiol. 2011 Jan;110(1):236-45.
Beneficial metabolic adaptations due to endurance exercise training in the fasted state.
You comments reflect a common misconception about exercise. Here is what we know.
1. The science. Studies confirm that ketones (a product of fat burning) increase dramatically after exercising before eating when compared to exercise after eating.
2. Evolution. We had to hunt and gather our food before we ate it.
3. Muscles are broken down with exercise and not burnt. They then repair stronger.
4. Starvation occurs in days, not hours after eating.
When exercising first thing in the morning, the body doesn't burn body fat, it burns muscle, because the body feels as if you are starving it. It down-regulates metabolism to work more slowly. To keep your blood sugars stable and get your body to burn fat, you need at least a little food in you before exercising! Not so much that you only burn the food you ate, but just enough to let your body know you are not starving it, and it can then tap into body fat for energy for the workout.
