wow this is a good speech... I personally agree with him, I think we should spend more on the space program and less on the military (even though they are closely linked)
American People Wake Up, A Cable News Show Did A Polling And Obama Was Up By More Than 58% But CNN Shows a 8% Obama Lead So Where are Mccains Votes Coming From A Fox News Poll Showed 72% of Americans Thought George Bush Was The Worst President In Us History 63% Said There Was No Difference Between McCain and Bush. So Where Are His Votes Coming From Mccain gives a Speech he is lucky to get a few Hundred people, Obama gives a Speech There Are Tens of Thousands. Don't forget about Florida
the difference is many republicans are generally older, not taking online polls, and actually plan on voting in the elections. not to say obama isn't ahead, but dont count your chickens just yet. Grannies vote!
Great speech! NASA needs a new vision that encourages space colonization and a more reusable space transportation system which should greatly enhance space commercialization and industrialization. I'm very excited about the National Aeronautics and Space Council and what innovative concepts they'll bring the table.
This sounds fantastic! I am a staunch supporter of NASA. However, didn't he say he was cutting funding from NASA to pay for science education? And that by doing this the Constellation program would be delayed by another 4 years at least?
I hope he wins. Its good to see there is progressive, forward thinking rhetoric again in U.S. politics. Bush pretty much derailed this country for a full 7 years, and I'd like to get back on track now.
This was the big issue I was wary about in regards to supporting Obama. I had previously heard he was going to cut funding for the space program to help with Education. I agree that Education is great, but the Space Program is not the thing that needs to suffer.
Is there any word about disarmament??? How about reducing weapons, so that other nations do not have incentives to acquire them???
Senator Obama states that "As long as states retain nuclear weapons, the U.S. will maintain a nuclear deterrent that is strong, safe, secure and reliable." There is no change from what there is already in DC. I don't see any change.
Finally we can start to look to the future again. This comfortable complacency is no longer comfortable lets break the mold and lead the world once more.
I agree with Obama on many issues but pouring billions of dollars into NASA is a total waste of money. We cannot even feed people in our own country yet we want to waste money to explore outerspace which has no real impact on the future. NASA has and always will be about pride and arrogance not about doing something that betters human kind.
Without NASA and a space program on the space coast, thousands more families would be in dire straits...Space exploration isn't just a pie in the sky thingamajig..it's a jobs issue....Tens of thousands of people depend on jobs revolving around space, science and technology...
With Obama, there is no doubt he will be remembered as a great American president, he will stand proudly with Washington and Lincon as a defining leader. If he can believe in himself enough to consider himself for the role and risk his own name and the democratic parties name by promising so much, how could you not support him. OBAMA '08.
I believe in Obama because first of all, he's brave enough to run, who would really take on this job at such a time, a falling economy, a failing war and the global issue of climate change. Sure, McCain could come to power and shuffle by as another generic republican, when it comes down to it, he won't get the blame, he would just be an extension of the Bush administration one.
I don't mean to say anything of dissrespect twards Mr.Mcain when I say he's too old to lead this country.
10 yrs. ago I respected his word. He was a mavrick of his time.
Now, I don't know of any stance he truely follows.
I make 50k/y. Go through some tough times but pay my taxes and do my job. I just want a Pres. that does the same for me.
My mama told me her mama told her the strongest part of your country should be the willingness to make your weakest stronger. I love you middle America.
can't really be focusing on NASA now we have to much shit going on in earth all tho I would love to live on moon. BTW we have new spaceships coming on the way.
Holy Crap, a presidential candidate that wants to support the Space program. What alternate dimension did I step in to? Thanks Barack, now I'm in love with you, before I was just content to support you. But now I'm in love
obviously Obama is going to be elected as president of the United States.:) Hillary Clinton was a tough one to beat but he did :) and as for McCain well I think we all know he really doesn't stand a chance.
Excellent ideas- please comment on the Pickens energy plan as a part of your energy solutions. also cplease comment on biodiesel fuel , the need for biodiesel vehicles, and other clean American power sources!
This weekend one of the National Norwegian Newspapers had a 9 pages article about poverty in the US. The article stated a poverty explosion under Bush watch. It's a disgrace! It seems that McCain doesn't want to discuss poverty. You should use it to attack the Republicans.
Finally!! I've been waiting for Obama to talk about how he'll deal with NASA once he's president. That was my only concern up till now; if Obama would cut funds for NASA like president's before him. But now, with this small speech I am sure Americans will actually explore Mars and finally return to the moon soon.
One of the best ways of addressing the issues of Dependence upon Foreign Oil, Global Warming, High Prices of Gas, and Smog in our Nation's Cities, and Outsourcing of American Jobs : Strong Support for Electric Vehicles.
With organizations like NASA, we have the engineering/research talent to make it happen!
I'm so happy to hear Mr. Obama speak of commitments to NASA and our vision for the future. I hadn't heard him speak specifically about this before and I was getting a little worried. We need another great vision for America - one that will inspire our young people the way my generation was inspired years ago.
Xone: If you want America to roll up its sleeves, like FDR demanded, and call for American technological superiority, like JFK, get everybody to vote for Barack Obama. Sure, he'll never be FDR or JFK, but just as Barack Obama he will do great things for your country.
Yay a space programm. As long as there are people who suffer from hunger or illness I dont want a goddamn space program. Of course it is a great symbol. Of course there are advantages if you have a working space program.
But is it worth it? Look up the costs of ONE shuttle. How many schools could you run with that money?
Honestly, the space program is way down my priority list vs. alternative energy. But I guess this is maybe a bigger issue in Florida. At least he didn't specifically push a manned mission to Mars.
great britain for obama..americans dont, let another bush, its clear mccian thinks bush economic plan is great,,no doubt he w`ll continues,,,whach out people,,
I am appealing to Obama to refrain from responding to the Mccain ads. Mccain has taking the low road and is simply looking for Obama to misspeak. The Odds are in favor of an Obama presidency thanks partly to George Bush. Obama please avoid controversy. Allow your surrogates to take care of Mccain.
I was thrilled and priveledged to hear Obama's endorsement of NASA's planned future missions to the Moon and to Mars in person today. The famous "If we can go to the moon, we can do anything!" attitude is exactly what America needs right now. What better way to spring-board a whole new generation of young scientists into careers as engineers, physicists, planetary geologists, and astrobiologists!
That is exactly what this country needs right now. A President that is working on improving NASA, not one that is wasting time on the economy, energy crisis and oh yeah, the war.
I'm a Brit who adores Obama and finds him deeply inspiring, but I do wonder where all the money is going to come from for all this stuff. I do hope he isn't promising more than he can deliver given the current state of the world economy and America's massive debt.
I just don't understand where were going to find all this money that were going to use for these changes. Of course I know where it will come from, but still :/
Allow Obama to revise some of his positions... if its for the better than it is... but lets not jump all over for making new decisions. Trust me that's sometimes a good thing. It doesn't take years for him to change his mind.
i concur. and he didn't change positions. opposing wholesale drilling everywhere including our most natural preserves is not the same as selective drilling based on economics and science plus the existing 68 million acres of land that oil companies aren't even tapping.
it's nuanced (know we've not had that for 8 years but one can always restart) and a well thought one.
I agree 100%. There is no person in this world who utters a plan and then is forced into re-visiting that plan. Nothing is written in stone except death and taxes.
It may be a revision of his position on drilling, but it's consistent with his position on bipartisanship and healing. We're so used to politicians claiming to be moderates who are prepared to compromise, it's exciting to find one who actually means it.
I am so happy that he changed his position. He needed too. Problem is that he didn't do it till McCain starting catching up to him in the polls. Obama is a pollwatcher just like every other politician out there, McCain included.
These are thoughts and plans. Its nice to hear for a change. Can he accomplish all these things? I do not know. But I know that Mr. Obama is going to pave the way for a new America!
He has wonderful points in that scientific study has been limited in fund, except a new version of the shuttle is going to be launched in 2010. Russia doesn't even have a shuttle.
The shuttle program is scheduled to sunset w/o any low-Earth-orbit passenger vehicle ready to replace it. Sure, NASA is working on the Ares rocket for the Constellation program, but that won't "replace" the shuttle, and it won't be ready for years. The Russians DO have a passenger vehicle -- Soyuz. In 2011, the nation that beat the Soviet Union in the space race will not only be grounded, but will have to pay for seats aboard Soyuz if it wants to visit the space station it bankrolled and built.
Hey...the Obama campaign...you are changing positions too quick...offshore drilling, Iraq surge....etc...you will be perceived as weak...you are too much on the defense...change the strategy please. We love you and support you and we don't want you to lose....may be try to get this guy.."the young turks" as part of your behind the scenes advisory team....you really could use his help.
i think the funding that goes into NASA should be to expand everything that has to do with technology and science jobs going overseas...also in expanding telecommunications not just for all the corporations and industries.
the offshore drilling will help the oil shareholders long before it helps you...can you wait patiently 10 years or so for the oil output to affect your pocket...the rich can wait for their shares! Its not about you at all......
Hes still not in favor of drilling, but would consider using it to bargain for the domestic alternatives we need. Just handing over the drilling rights now would be a HUGE mistake. Beyond the fact that they are unnecessary when the industry has untouched leases RIGHT NOW.
Actually, his stance now has not really changed, just been clarified. He's always said that surge will reduce violence but it mostly amounted to putting a band-aid on it, and ignored the ultimate mission to find and defeat Osama Bin-Laden.
About offshore drilling, all he's saying is that he's willing to compromise and will not completely oppose the idea as long as it's environmentally safe and part of a larger energy plan. This may be a nuanced position but it's definitely not a flip-flop.
stay on message Senator Obama. That's what I'm going to do. I have made a pledge to myself after watching the "Moses" ad that McShame has put out. I will no longer give him or his campaign any more of my time or energy. I will make more phone calls and register more new voters and I will give more money and do all I can do to support you and your message. Stay on target, stay on point.
We have your back..........let us press for the high calling.....Obama 2008!
Extending at least ONE more flight after 2010...
First flight of Ares is 2015, can we do it faster now? It's time to give NASA the capital and support it needs!

He has wonderful points in that scientific study has been limited in fund, except a new version of the shuttle is going to be launched in 2010. Russia doesn't even have a shuttle.
New8wid 3 years ago 8

Mccain was against offshore drilling before he was against it.

sometimes they have to play the game.
i think the funding that goes into NASA should be to expand everything that has to do with technology and science jobs going overseas...also in expanding telecommunications not just for all the corporations and industries.
eternallybeatdown2 3 years ago
Well quite a bit of space technologies are in our daily life actually.

the offshore drilling will help the oil shareholders long before it helps you...can you wait patiently 10 years or so for the oil output to affect your pocket...the rich can wait for their shares! Its not about you at all......
5xmama 3 years ago
Hes still not in favor of drilling, but would consider using it to bargain for the domestic alternatives we need. Just handing over the drilling rights now would be a HUGE mistake. Beyond the fact that they are unnecessary when the industry has untouched leases RIGHT NOW.
widgetbrain 3 years ago 2
Actually, his stance now has not really changed, just been clarified. He's always said that surge will reduce violence but it mostly amounted to putting a band-aid on it, and ignored the ultimate mission to find and defeat Osama Bin-Laden.
About offshore drilling, all he's saying is that he's willing to compromise and will not completely oppose the idea as long as it's environmentally safe and part of a larger energy plan. This may be a nuanced position but it's definitely not a flip-flop.

Thanks Mr. Obama for not letting us forget the possibilities of what America operating correctly can do.
God bless you.

stay on message Senator Obama.
