I lived in Homestead while Andrew HIT!!!! i was 10 years old, i will never forget that experience, running from room to room, as doors, windows and walls caved in or were sucked out around us... i stepped out with my father during the eye, and it was so calm but everyones homes looked like a bomb went off, than the 2nd half hit.. me, my mom, dad, sister, and grandmother had to fight the storm in a bathtub holding the curtain from bedry while my father held the walls up from falling in us... :"-(
I was only like 3 when this hurricane hit, and two days after the hurricane hit my dads mom went to her house to look at the damages and she had a heart attack right in front of the house cause she was so shocked at the damages. RIP.
Spazzz96 I was near sw122 ave and sw168th st. down the street from robert morgan vocational. I stayed at my grandmas house huddled up in the hallway too lol. The weird thing with the animals is they knew a storm was coming because the cats wouldnt go outside for 2 days before the storm came. Our cats were never inside lol
I rememeber. I was only five but I remember waking up in my grandmothers house where we were riding out the storm in the middle of the night and my whole family huddled in the hallway with 5 dogs and the walls vibrating and the attic door opening and closing. I remember seeing my parents house for the first time and stepping on soaked carpet and half our roof was missing. We lived in my grandmothers house for 2 weeks. Then parents house in a trailer for months. Cutler ridge area.
i was in the westchester area... i was 17 years old. It was very bad....and we had no electricity or water for 4 days afterwards.... worst hit areas were homestead...further south.
I remember it well. There were ten of us huddled in a small walkin closet. It was the most terrifying thing I've ever experienced. My family were all okay and eventually we were able to move back into our home.
i lived in homestead when it came.. i was about 6, and i still remember the experience. it was one of the most terrifying things ever. i also remember meeting bill clinton when he landed in a helicopter a few blocks from my house a few days later. haha.
the endind of this video clip is dead on. we may have survived it, but not only will we never forget it, we'd never be the same. 17 years later i still hear the screaming wind, still envision the walls that looked as if they were breathing from the pressure. walking outside afterwards, well, there's no words to describe that kind of loss and emptiness that you feel when your world as you knew it is nothing more than rubble at your feet, in every direction. it's a memory seared into your heart
Me and my relatives were stuck in the shelter it sucked i did not fall asleep for any reason dang this thing made land fall as a category 5 with the winds of 175 mph while it made landfall in the kendall miami area my house was raveged by this sorm it also caused th roof to fly off the school(shelter). i will never foret what we shared.
I wasn't here and I guess that at my age I never put attention at all to this. I barely remember a thing. Besides all the comments I'd say that there were more damages due to the weak constructions we have in the US. Everything is like fake, mostly.
Not only did Andrew do a lot of damage to florida and Louisiana as a hurricane. It set off strong tornadoes as well which the tornadoes did a lot of damage.
A cat 5 for sure........there were wind gusts in excess of 200 mph in several places. My home was in goulds and I rode the storm out in kendall. I will NEVER forget that night and I hope I never have to go through it again.
This is so sad. I was 8 when Andrew hit and I lived in Cutler Ridge right by the old Regal Cinemas that are no longer there. I was young, but at 26 now, I look at how painful and stressful it was for everyone and am so grateful to still have my family. We lost our home and I will never take anything for granted.... :(
I was in Homestead when Andrew hit. Homestead was the worst hit areas. It was real bad. The Homestead Airforce Base got a reading of 215 mph before they lost their wind meter.
i live in miami, florida but i was not born when this happened......-_- whatever..and florida is a shit trick?!?!?!fuck you!and i have been in florida because i live here...-sigh- i wish you people new.....
Interesting, everyone b***** about florida but they always come down here from all over the country and world, and I don't believe its because of the weather
Ever wonder why Florida is so flat? Could it be hurricane erosion? If and average of just 2 hurricanes hit Florida over the past 100 million years, that's 200 million hurricanes! It is likely that when the planet was much warmer, maybe just 20,000 years ago or so, the hurricane season was far more intense then it is now.
when you said pine lakes, did you mean the elem. school? if so thats right around the corner from me. man i hope to never go thru anything like that again. if i were to dig around in my backyard right now i can still find pieces of the roof from way back then
hurricane andrew hit at the beginning of my senior year in high school. school started 5 weeks late which we loved of course. but- it was horrible i thought our house was bad until i saw people whose roofs blew off with them inside. . crouched in closets with water rising. so far, ike is a bit less powerful and lets hope it looses strength as it goes. miami is a unique city full of tropical life and amazing birds. as for the rest of it.....well i dont live there anymore.
I was 19 when it happened and I agree with you it was definitely a 5 and I would say a 6 or 7 if it existed. I was on Miami Beach and most of the people where I lived were evacuated to South Miami where it hit the worst. It just goes to prove you that they can't predict or control mother nature. I don't live there anymore either, but a Hurricane Andrew comes about once a century. I would give it another 90 years. If I live to be a 100 I doubt I will ever see another Hurricane Andrew again.
hurricane katrina was worse. There been so many worse hurricanes than Andrew recently. It looks like these type of storms are gonna happen more often than only once in a 100 years..
My dad used to live in Miami! He was in the hurricane! I think it was catagory five. Well there are new hurricanes comin up! I've never been to a catagory five hurricane before! The worst was three...or maybe four..?? Well I don't know. Soooooo visit my channel, subscribe, and ciao!
I was 4 years old when this happened. Still living in the same house, nothing bad happened but a hug tree crushed my roof which FEMA took care off =). I live in Liberty City, Dade County
I was born a year after this. My mom is always telling me how scary it was...in fact, she lived in what was Cutler Ridge at the time. We still live in Florida, but much more north than that.

This is an awesome video. I totally recommend it to anyone who is researching Hurricane Andrew for a project. I only say that though because of the fact that I just got an assignment that requires researching a hurricane or a tornado. I was in my first year of college, my family (and I) still live in Fl.City (ground 0)...we lost EVERYTHING to Andrew...but like everyone else, we picked up the pieces and rebuilt...no FEMA help, no handouts, my parents did'nt even have a good job...Katrina people, quit your crying and rebuild your city...it took us 10 years but we did.
Recently, I have received a few responses wanting to know where these pictures were taken. I just updated the video description to include that information.

Good to see that you stayed and rebuilt. Two good childhood friends of mine ended up leaving, including one who lived in Pine Lakes and lost everything. I helped moved them into my house until they could get back on their feet. FEMA gave some of the people in that development grants, most others relied on their insurance companies.
