very canadian. i imagine she's the fisty type of lezza. internal puncture wounds allowing the leakage of faeces into the birth canal, that sort of thing. this song is incredibly, genuinely odd.
You can hear Holly Cole singing on here, and the angel singing is Rebecca Jenkins - both have sang with Jane live over the years. I will be the second person to say I am not a sheep either. You either "get" or like Jane or you don't. You don't and you have a right to that. I love her stuff and I too wondered, what is it with the name change? But whatever, she still makes fascinating music. There is no one like her.
I gave up long ago trying to convert people who would never "get" Jane. Its one of those things, personally I love her music, and especially the album this is from. But others won't and thats fine.
btw it is a scary song - the song is a prelude to death - but if you found this scary and awful there's no point recommending you listen to the whole cycle of life on When I Was a Boy I s'pose...The Vigil(The Sea), the next song on the album, would have you running for the hills...
I think the song is more of a prelude to life, than to death...the analogy is to the Annunciation, that is when the Angel Gabriel appeared to the Virgin Mary, asking her consent to be Mother of Jesus. Jane here is a woman contemplating motherhood; when the Angel comes to her with the proposition to be a mother, she says "I can't" until the Angel throttles her into agreeing! It ends with the female figure now pregnant, with her husband cuddled up to her and we hear the sound of a baby. Lovely!
In 1945, a young girl named katu lata kulu came over to America on a grey boat from Africa. A mysterious man killed her by cutting the word "Latualatuka" into her back. Now that you've read this message, she will come to your house on a full moon and steal your soul unless you follow these directions:
She changed her name to ISSA. One of my favorite artists. Whats up with the name change?? Will it push her further into obscurity? that would be a shame.
Jane at her peak. Fabulous. When I Was a Boy is one of the best albums ever made, but sadly undiscovered. This has all the complexity, wonderful songwriting and visionary imagination of Jane at her very best.

I think she, and her music, is just freaky & scary. This is awful. Do you just have to be sheep and say this is great? It's awful.
