Laura Ling's definitely got guts. She did this story very well. Later on, she was doing some work with another journalist in China near the North Korean border, and the North Korean gov't arrested them, claiming they'd trespassed into their country without permission. They were nearly sentenced to a 12-year prison term there! Thankfully, Bill Clinton flew over there and convinced Kim Jong-Il to let them go.

Where I was stationed if a Puerto Rican got caught with a bag of heroin he got 2 tears guaranteed,black same bag 6 months,white dishonorable discharge with usually no jail time. You would have to track down some people who were there to verify this but I'm not lying,there was a multi layered system of punishment in place and that is why there was so much racial tension in the years right after Viet Nam! My nephew just got out of Corcoran a few months ago. He did about 2 years with the last 9 months in the SHU. He said it was horrible, but he got used to it. I know we need prisons but the USA gives sentences that are far too long. If you give a 25 year old 2 years he may be a salvageable human being when released at age 27. If you gave him 9 years you will release a 34 year old with an "institutional man". He may not be able to return to functional society after being away that long.

Continued- By our LONG sentencing we cause overcrowding and it costs a fortune. If you don't "learn your lesson" in 2 years why would an extra 3 or 4 years make society better? Humans are highly adaptable animals and even the nicest, gentlest young man WILL harden into an anti social and possibly dangerous man if institutionalized for too long. Let's do what's best for society. Stopping overcrowding and budget problems would be a reasonable start...
