it switches the pick ups, therefore it changes the sound. the back (bridge) pick up usually gives more crisp sound

switches the tone of the sound from the neck, bridge, or both most of the time solos are played on the neck position there are three on gijineko's Les Paul, and on Strat types there are five!!!^_^
