It makes much more sense that once (1) speaking to the wife has failed (2) refraining from intimacy has failed, the next logical step would be to (3) leave her alone/dont speak to her/communicate with her and generally, avoid her company.
It makes a lot of sense because that's part of how men learn patience. If every time the husband gets angry because of his wife, she will be broken by the end of the 1st day they are together, knowing that when 2 get married the hardest time they spend together is the 1st couple of months.

In the verse you quoted, the word "Awliya" is used. It is a plural and its singular is "wali". The correct translation of the word ""wali"" is not "friend" but it is someone who is very close and intimate. It is also used to mean "guardian, protector, patron, lord and master".

[Allah forbids you not with regard to those who fight you not for your faith, nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them. For Allah loves those who are just. Allah only forbids you with regard to those who fight you for your faith, and drive you out of your homes and support others in driving you out, from turning to them for protection (or taking them as wali).

I'm not a religious person, but I have noticed the people that always insult Islam and it's contents are usually brought up Christian, and would read the Qur'an to find things they don't like in it. Picture a scenario where the husband is in a state of heightened anger/rage - he's been through the previous two stages of 'dealing with a problematic wife' -- how likely is it that in such a state, he's going to be able to restrict the beating to something as USELESS as a tap on the palm/miswak/toothpick?

I dont. I agree with the lady and Ive heard this opinion from some others too. It makes much more sense that once (1) speaking to the wife has failed (2) refraining from intimacy has failed, the next logical step would be to (3) leave her alone/dont speak to her/communicate with her and generally, avoid her company.

It makes a lot of sense because that's part of how men learn patience. If every time the husband gets angry because of his wife, she will be broken by the end of the 1st day they are together, knowing that when 2 get married the hardest time they spend together is the 1st couple of months.

If its about patience, then surely the best thing is NOT to get physical at all?
Wouldnt doing that lessen the chances of reconciliation even more?
If no room is left for physical action in the first place, the chances of a peaceful resolution are far more likely.

Think of it this way, do you really think the prophet peace be upon him would literally beat one of his wives? NO, of course not! The prophet is THE best man ever created by Allah, and we (the followers) are suppose to try our best to be like him. My main qualm is that if you take the word in the verse to mean 'beat', then a man can beat her to within an inch of her life and would be justified in doing so, because the word 'lightly' is absent from that verse- only some scholars/commentators have added that on - the Quran itself doesnt contain it.

Yes, the Propthet (pbuh&hf) never raised his hand on any woman, least of all his wives even though he faced occasional problems with them -- some of which greatly disturbed him -- yet he only either
(1) stopped speaking to them until calm or (2) separated himself (as in the incident of the necklace with Aisha(ra)).
This, imo further discredits the argument for physical discipline overall.

It is obvious that one marries someone for love and friendship. The correct translation of the verse in Surat Al-Ma idah is: [O you who believe! Do not take Jews and Christians as your patrons. They are patrons of their own people. He among you who will turn to them for patronage is one of them. Verily Allah guides not a people unjust.] (Al-Ma'dah 5: 51)
It is obvious that Jews patronize the Jews and Christians patronize the Christians, so why not Muslims patronize Muslims and support their own people. This verse is not telling us.....

In the verse you quoted, the word "Awliya" is used. It is a plural and its singular is "wali". The correct translation of the word ""wali"" is not "friend" but it is someone who is very close and intimate. It is also used to mean "guardian, protector, patron, lord and master".
