From what i understand from the dvd's special features section with the director Feng Xiaogang no one is supose to know who killed the Empress incumbant a sort of you reap what you so ethical example for her many plotting in the movie.

I think no one killed the empress. Rather, i think she wanted the prince to kill herself at the end of the banquet in order to repent for her sins. But since the prince was dead, that wish can no longer be granted. That's why the flying sword that stabbed her heart just represents the inner pain that she endured.

At least that 's what i think.
