You know, CONTEXT might be a key thing here. Verhoeven has directed about a half-dozen straight satires. Why not find out about his aesthetic and worldview to see WHY he's presenting things the way he is instead of just attacking him straight up? I think Roger Ebert nailed this one: "The movie's protesters might take note of the fact that this film's heterosexuals, starting with Douglas, are equally offensive."
Well, when it's just another stupid, pussy argument it's no wonder no one will listen. If the film was clearly homophobic I would have understood, but JESUS FUCKING CHRIST! They make scenes about such stupid issues all the time...like they WANT us to be conscious about the differences between the queer and the straight... anti-discrimination is about equality. The only people who are making an issue about gayness are insecure people who don't feel content with themselves!
I think the gay protesters in San Francisco who fought against the movie are imbeciles. They did a lot more damage to the gay community through their own actions then the movie could have ever done (and it didn't). Also, their arguments contradict their actions. They say they do not want censorship and want to be treated fairly yet they demand to change the script and boycott the movie because it does not suit their personal views. Verhoeven got it right: "being gay is not an issue".
@MrPitch100 I agree. Their very statement "we're not trying to be censors" doesn't cut ice because that's just what they were trying to do. I think Verhoeven is right: the film barely comments about the characters sexuality because he just treats it like a fact of life (which it is). They had no interest in looking at his other films or his personal politics, which are extremely liberal. Ultimately, by stirring up the controversy they did, they ENSURED the film's success.
@hanshotfirst1138 Spetters is still available thru Amazon. As for the others you could try importing them from Russia for example, they're dirt cheap here ($2-8), most have original Dutch audio, but no English subtitles though.
Sharon Stone's character did not end up w/ a man b/c her girlfriend died. She orchestrated everyone's fate and is suggested that she killed Michael afterwards.
@jp3813 Yeah, I've actually heard it argued that Verhoeven was satirically playing things the opposite way, having her avenge herself on all of the male characters in a male-dominated world and more to the point, the implication at the end if pretty strongly that Douglas's character will be killed once she's done with him.
Being gay is not an issue...thanks a lot. I love you Paul Verhoeven. That's the opinion more people should've had.
These fuckin assholes make me feel embarrassed about being queer. Jesus Christ! They make such an issue outta nothing. What the hell is that supposed to do other than put homosexuals in a bad light? No wonder this thing is never coming to an end
LOL. The homo's crying foul about the movie.. It's only a movie, and they whine and cry to try and get some pub from it.. Bunch of losers..

people are stupid, she's not a killer because she's bisexual, just in the same way that she's not a killer because she's blonde.

A truly stupid movie. They would have jailed Catherine using DNA.
So glad Michael Douglas is dying from stgae IV throat cancer which has spread to his lymph nodes.

05:53, you see, Queer Nation's protest was less about the movie then publicizing their sub-culture and organization.

The protestors are so crazy lol, the script isnt homophobic at all.

I love Catherine Terrmel shes one those villans that you would be scared of but she also suduce u and maybe even teach u a thing or two

They also made the mistake of believing that she was the protagonist. She was the main character but the main character was the antagonist.

My thoughts exactly. The fact that they even wanted to change the ending so that Sharon Stone was the detective is laughable.

I wish I could see The 4th Man or some of Verhoeven's out-of-print early work. Who owns the rights? It hasn't been rereleased in so long.
