Great video man! You probably already answered this somewhere but what kind of turbo is this? It looks like a small IHI from a CX 500 turbo motorcycle but I'm not sure. Can't wait to see another vid!
dude weld katanas to the blades and take the blade covers off. then you could turbo into dogs' legs before they know what hit them just walking down the street!
OH MY GOD how much of a kink is in that exhaust pipe off the turbo. it looks like its all most closed in the video. lessen the bend and let it exhaust the gasses ,
does the turbo have a decent impact on such a small engine. Everyone tells me that the exhaust from a small motor can't spin the compressor well enough to produce boost unless you have an extremely tiny turbo, what is your turbo from
that looks awesome im having a hard time finding out how to make lawn mowers go fast/super fast like this thing looks like i could do...im new to this stuff dont really no anything hope to get my first mower tuesday i wanna make it fast so far there's no blueprints to explain it plan and simple :S
@codydixon19 how? i don't understand... its not a car, it doesn't have a high speed transmission, it has a high torque and the engine runs the same speed...
I have a JD 175 hydro I ride every week to cut my 1/2 acre of zoysia grass. I can't see the purpose of the thing for simple mowing as the throttle is fixed and a turbo would be useless. If I wanted more usable power I would simple replace the engine. I will do that anyway as the mower is into it's second decade. That thing is not used for mowing.
@alwaysopen well it wouldn't really be useless if hes actually making boost. the reason that a turbo on that is a good idea is the same reason a turbo in a front end loader or a backhoe is a good idea, is makes the machine more efficient in general if it does its job as a turbo correctly.
hello. great video. i have one question. where did you find a turbo like that of that size for small engines? if you know of any places please notify me. thanks
Hi Kurt ! I have not talked to you in a while. Hope all is well. I got a good start on mine last fall and made a little video for my page. Got -4AN fittings over the winter. Now that spring is nearing, i am eager to get started on it again. Cheers !
I did not modify the carburetor any... Currently I'm only running ~4 pounds of boost. This little Kohler engine uses a pressurized oil system. I made a plate between the block and filter to supply the oil and I have an auxiliary pump to return the oil back up to the valve cover. Please read all the comments to see my other replies for more info.
uhhh get a crappy mower and put that engine on it and make a racing mower when that thing spooled it would be sick!!!!! you can here the thing really hittin boost when you turned the throttle by hand!!
i dont care, worthless or not, that sound of a turbo spooling and unspooling on a fuckin lawnmower... priceless. i bet its building boost too, a 22 horse puts out enough exhaust to spool up that tiny turbo
Thanks for all the comments... I'm not on here too much so I won't try to reply to any in particular but check out all the previous posts if you're interested in more info. The project was not too expensive but it did take some time and even more aggravation... Thanks!
Mostly all riding lawnmowers are like that, you can't just pass an exhaust pipe right through the blades. Also lawnmowers are slow, there's no "high speed" air entering the engine.
did you mount the carb on the intake of the turbocharger so that it gets sucked through the turbo, or did you mount it so that no gas gets sucked through the turbo but the turbo pushes air through the carb?
did you mount the carb on the intake of the turbocharger so that it gets sucked through the turbo, or did you mount it so that no gas gets sucked through the turbo but the turbo pushes air through the carb?
Thanks for the comments... I didn't buy a "kit", it all had to be fabricated... It would pop wheelies before the turbo :) It doesn't really do much that I can notice for power, but it does make that cool turbo sound!
The car you can see in the background is a 54' Pontiac Star Chief conv. and there's also a 31' model A streetrod right behind the mower (you can barely see the radiator just above the mower's fender).
you need a 25 or 27 hp carb on there... if not more. forced induction systems only force more air in there if you don't throw enough fuel to em, they'll burn a hole in the pistons. btw, where'd u get that setup and for how much lol cool vid
imagine on a sunday and your neighbour is reading the paper out the front of his house. Then your decide to do your lawn and he see's this TURBO MOWER black with red flames down the sides roll out.jajajaja you would be the king of the street!!Great job mate keep it up
I would suggest you find a really small turbo, BorgWarner KP35 size or similar. I don't know if your engine has its own pressurized oil system but an external electric pump could possibly be found and installed that would handle the job... Then just fab up the header etc and enjoy!
I will load some more action shots sometime soon but it's not exactly grass cutting season now...
if you turbo it maybe get a 14.5 rod in it too. the 12.5 rods arent as strong as they should be. im just parroting what my grampa said and according to him it works.
Yeah, that's what alot of people do. Good thing about the defect is you can usually pick up broken 12.5s for free, then upgrade the rods, if there isn't a hole in the block.
very nice i want to install one but dont know how to install a oil system for the turbo do you have have to drill into the block to get oil pressure? or the tourbo has a pump in it? thanks
The Kohler engine has its' own pressurized oil system which I pulled off of for the turbo... The turbo has made as much as 10 psi but I backed the wastegate setting off a bit as I don't need that much boost, just wanted the sound more than anything. Please check out the earlier comments for other info that may have been missed.
It is a blowthrough set-up... there are no modifications to the carburetor or fuel system. I did installed a 15 psi fuel pump but turned out, didn't need it. Turbo only runs ~4 psi boost pressure so pushing fuel out of the bowl isn't an issue.
