  • i use a 18 watt solar panel for charging 2 sealed lead acid baterys for my yeasu ft817 its great i can sit out on my backyard and works great

  • The set up will recieve on low power when you transmitt is where you need the additional panels to put the fire in the wire. With it being so portable you can take your system to an overpass or hill top and improve the ability to get out farther. Eventually the very few that have a setup will be the only long range communicators.

  • Yeah, but what is that, a 20 Watt panel?

Seems kinda small to charge a battery.

How much power does the rig consume?

  • ArtyFart

Most radios consume anywhere from 10 to 14 amps depending on how high you have your wattage output set. Many of the HF radios like my TS 2000 will put out 100w and I believe it will draw 14 amps while doing so. There is a math calculation for it. Anyway I am interested in going solar/battery backup for my Uhf repeater here in Washington so that is why I am here at this video.

  • That's a great idea to get away from all the electrical noise. And since it's running on solar power, it'll work even during a power failure.

  • Please help an M3, can I use a 12v 7.5Ah Gel battery with the solar charging system? I take it the panel trickle charges the battery.

The widegt in between does this regulate the flow from the panel?

What wattage solar panel would i need to do this with a 12v 7.5 / 8 amp Gel Battery? anybodys help here would be great Im just about to go mobile after being held back for years with disabilities finaly have a FT857 to play with ouside almost there, 73s M3XEM

  • Solar panels are anywhere from about $100 for low powered ones to thousands. You'll need to know the power requirements for what they're being used for to pick the exact one you'll need, but you can build a solar power setup for two or three hundred dollars that will power a lower powered amateur station.

  • This is great. I want to solar power my 817ND because the internal batteries don't last very long. Thanks for the video.

  • Use a ground antennae-vastly superior-long live Tesla!!!

  • i was gonna buy some from Frys to power my little room

  • where you got that solar panel??

i need one similar for a school experiment...

oh and how much it costs???

  • You can build your own solar panels and solar cars <<those are fun for under $35, you need copper and you need to heat it until its black, theres more to it than that- you can google SOLAR CAR and you can get the Plans and all the items you need to do so. Same with solar panels, you dont need to spend hundreds or thousands as some have suggested here. I Found loads of them. Also consider a SOLAR CELL to use for the battery instead of actual batteries. Hope this helps! Peace!

  • Nice! I've thought about getting a HAM license. I talked on a CB radio for a while when I was a kid, but I used to pull a lot of pranks and I kind of got myself into trouble. hehehe

  • I love the set up it gives me some neat ideas

  • I would like to setup something similar to this. But with a larger tower. I have inlaws in the Philippines, and this would be great. Since most of their cellphones seem to be out of coverage area more than not.

  • Where can i get a 50 Ah battery ?

  • Any battery supplier should have this. You will be asking for a sealed lead acid / gel type rated at 12VDC @ 50Ah. Be warned these are heavy so you may want to pick up locally if possible. You can also google it and purchase from online.

  • thanks much!!
