@TheoreticalBullshit At 4:30 it sounds as though you're making the case FOR faith. You say that the virtue comes from the belief or the assumption that something exists greater than yourself, whether or not it can be proven. I've heard similar claims made by Christians in defense of faith as virtue. Can you clarify what you meant for me?
They like the idea of free will so they hate the verses that teach predestination ! Rom 9 eph 1 acts 13:48 John6:44 ,65 . So my fellow atheists when they say their god loves everyone and Jesus died for everyone and if they talk about free will just quote these verses!
Most Christians rely on a translation but don't really know for the most part what their holy book actually says. Also even when they read their translation they are looking at it through the interpretations and opinions of their pastor or prefabricated bible study booklet etc.
One must realize that the word faith is a loaded term just like freewill! When talking with Christians about faith or pistos in the new testament Greek is either mere humen trust or a saving faith witch is granted by god to his elect Ephesians ch1:4-9 and 2:8 acts 13:48.
How can nature be greater than you when you are part of nature? The fact that you overcame non-existence by natural means, doesn't that make you more superior to nature? Because now you have a mind from this accidental formation of atoms. It's contradictory to separate myself from nature when nature is what made me. The only conceivable greater than nature and ourselves is God, if man's existence along with nature is contingent on the ontology of existence.
And how does one display humility to nature? I'm sure no one has ever humbled themselves because they saw a falling star, or a whiff breeze. We humble ourselves to other people in appropriate circumstances, who are by nature minds. So this humility we display as humans can only be to an ontological mind, because it will be contradictory and unreasonable to display it to nature.
i would say on a day to day basis agnostics tend to be the most humble (says me, the agnostic, bigging up my own beleif :P) athiests and religous people in my experience tend to have this idea that they are 100% right without ever questioning themselves, which doesnt really say "humble" to me.
While I agree that agnostics are probably the most humble, no rational atheist believes they are 100% right. Many believe they are 99.99% right, but being rational requires you to be accept the fact that you can never be completely right, (or at least completely sure), about something because there is always a chance in the future that you might be disproven.
I can't say anything for the theists, but I hope many are similar in that regard.
whatever faith or whatever is, people, nobody fucking gives a shit what anyone else believes unless youre one of those obnoxious, over religious people who go around telling everyone this or that
the most violent people tend to be the ones who have gods.
bleif and faith arent the same thing. Yes there of the same strand, but faith is without evidence, but believe can have it. I believe that my bed is below me, but thats, becuase i feel, see, smell, taste. blah blah blah it.
YOu said somewhere beleif and faith are ugh.. I just looked up the actual definition of synonym. I thought the words had to mean the same thing. not "similar".. Ok, w/e i agree wit the video 100%
Logical? I use to be christian and god that book was the most illogical thing in the world. A god that is all loving but kills all but 2 of every animal except the dinosaurs. Seriously that makes hitler look like a schoolyard bully
I'm finally starting to understand the Bible with the help of biblical scholars and historians. Of course, that means I don't believe the Bible is inspired, consistent, or true. At one time, the view of God was somewhat logical: the Jews originally believed in many gods, including El, the father of the gods. His sons each ruled over a nation, and YHWH ("The Lord") ruled over Israel. It's important to understand that this wasn't monotheism but henotheism.
Also, God's power, omnipresence, and "goodness" grew over the years. Just look at the Adam and Eve story and you'll see a god who doesn't know everything, can't see into the future, and isn't everywhere at once. In fact, he actually walks! During the Babylonian captivity, the Jews adopted the Zoroastrian idea of the evil anti-god, which they fused with the Satan. But originally, God was the source of all good and bad. That's why it made sense back then for God to kill everyone- he was a tyrant.
An obvious evidence of the transition to the belief in Satan as the source of evil is 2 Samuel 24:1 and 1 Chronicles 21:1. The earlier version of the story blames God, while the later version (chronicles) blames Satan.
The Bible is actually quite interesting, but if you want any insight at all into it, and if you want to understand al the nonsense in it, you've got to turn to non-believers. I like Robert Price a lot- he speaks frankly about it without pretending it's divine and infallible.
Scott, to answer your query. Remove the main factor, or person in which any world religion focuses on, phrophet, what have you, and you'll come to the conclusion that all those faiths and their tenets would stay in tact, and not be effected, lest 1. Christianity.
Faith, the true faith, is a gift from God, a kind of knowledge which surpasses reason and which reason serves. Note I said 'true faith', 'gift from God'. For man's reason can not apprehend God; God must reveal Himself to man. That God is, however, this reason can reach. Only the fool says in his heart there is no God.
@GaceyTheClown Not exactly. First I wasn't calling anyone in particular a fool. Second I was quoting from Scripture (cf Psalm 14:1, 53:1). The Scripture you are ferring to is Matt 5:22. Here Jesus is speaking of one calling a brother 'a fool.' But Scripture in general denotes the one who refuses to believe as a 'fool.'
By the way -- When you get time, perhaps you could make a vid telling us a little about yourself. You must have a job that keeps you busy. Are you still in college or grad school as well as working as an actor/musician? Are you more of a musician or actor? Take care, and keep asking questions and slaughtering sacred cows! (Moooooo!) :D

Most Christians don't like to believe their god hates anyone so they stay clear or verses like psalm 5:5 "God hates all workers of iniquitie "

did not jesus say something like "he who calls another a fool is the fool himself and shall be cast into hell for all eternity"?
GaceyTheClown 4 years ago
Not exactly: Matt 5:1 ...whoever says, `You fool!' shall be liable to the hell of fire.
But the words: "Only the fool says in his heart there is no God" are also from the Bible: Psalm 14:1 and Psalm 53:1

OK, I am quitting my sympathy towards Christ RIGHT NOW.

basically The bible is a bunch of ping-pong mess. Of course there are good things that can be taken out of it
Basically the two commandments
"Love thy God."-Which is "Within"
And "Love thy Neighbor."
