All engine and truck companies in the department have at least one green warning light mounted on the front right of the vehicle, directly opposite a corresponding red light. Modeled off of the marker lights used on ships (where a red light is used to mark the port, of left side of the vessel, while a green light is used to mark the starboard, or right side), the system was thought up by Albert Goodrich, who became fire commissioner in 1927.
His family owned a steamship line, and he took the lighting idea from his experience there. Though not especially useful in firefighting (the marker lights' purpose in the nautical world is to help ships pass each other at night or in foggy weather) it has nonetheless stuck, and is a distinctive feature of the city's engines and trucks.
The tradition has since been expanded to cover the lights on the front of firehouses (again with a red light on the station's left and a green one on the right), just as red and green lights are used to mark slips and passages through breakwaters for boats.
Great video!! I hang out in Chicago during the summer weekends and always walk by this station on the way downtown. I am normally only lucky enough to see the ambulance go out.
yea the reason they have electrical Q's is because their in the city and the Q2b for instance is too loud and with the close proximity buildings it creates an echo and at full blast could break windows FDNY has banned the Federal Q's because of that some trucks in FDNY have normal Q's but most use electrical sirens but Chicago wants to at least have something close to a real Q so it sounds like a good old fashion fire truck so thats why its electrical
Yes, they sure are. The new white command van 2-7-1 sitting next to Truck 3 was purchased for a little under $1 million. The department purchased 2 of those command rigs.
Thanks!! When I arrived at Engine Co. 42's house that morning I was very surprised to find the house full. That lasted about 5 minutes and Truck 3 went out.
this is station 1,it only has 1 engine and a truck company and a medic. The rest are just civil service units.nice vid

I think the CFD should put a bell on their trucks if they are using an out-dated Q siren.
CDPDPatrolUnit 4 years ago
Thats not an out of date Q. Its an electronic Q. Almost all new trucks in big cities have them.
