Spirituality and an unbiased quest for truth are the starting point to truly understanding ourselves from a histroical point of view. We must also account for a shift in our paradigm, since the world view we would've been born into in earlier times wouldn't have been as racialized and get to the heart of issues in a more direct and pure way. Mos Def is a good person, a decent MC as well, but he can't seem to transcend his fixation with the problem, he needs to begin to propose solutions. It is his duty as a conscious entertainer to not only inspire questions but answers as well. The story of this slave is moving, but I wish it started earlier so we could know where he came from and how he got into the hands of these devils. Post middle passage stories leave out an important part of the slave experience.

Hey MonAlgeria, I actually like your video post and I like Mos Def. We sort of got off on the wrong foot and then it spiraled. Let's start again, thanks for having me on your page here, like the video clip. I'm just passionate about the years before and leading up to slavery because I think many people focus on the period of slavery and the years after and have had issues with identity, but the individual stories are heart braking,

My world view remains unattached and evolves from an unbiased research of truth. For example if you want to know about the origins of Christianity, you don't study the new testament, but look into older scriptures like the Dead Sea Scrolls, to see who Paul really was, who Jesus' brother really was, etc. These documents don't refelct the bias of theological studies in later eras when there were religious points of view at stake. Straight historical truths with no Chaser.

A lot of people associate Jews as the European ones in New York, Mos Def himself probably knows little about the origins of the Israelites of Africa, introspective and deep as he is, he desires to find himself in a deeper context then the prisoners of modern day babylon. Islam offered an alternative to Christianity as given by the West, which he clearly resisted as being right for him. But he is not to blame for this, he was granted the life he was and has made it positive, so props for that!

Mos Def, had he been granted his identity prior to the middle passage would have known himself to be not animist, as some label "African" traditions but rather their predecessor, Israelite. Those who preserved their faith, as did the Nigerian Israelites, those in Mali, those in Ghana, etc have retained older world views then those who were often forcibly converted to Chrissianity or Islam, who today are in conflict, while the Israelites stay to themselves, in the South of Nigeria, Igbo Jews.

Mos Def is Muslim because he was born without an understanding of his true identity. He sees the world from the perspective of his project window but cannot see much further then that. Most of his fans are white people that like to associate with a so called conscious hip-hop elite, who stick together and pretend to be freedom fighters but exclude themselves from reality rappers and think they are all original but in reality mos def is clueless about where he really comes from.
