Archer sucks in melee, and you should know it, cause he LOST to Shirou.. So there is another question.. Why couldn't Archer use the special skills on Shirou?
For example in the UBW path of the game, Shirou didn't use the splendid techniques of the previous wielders.. At all.. He can imitate the noble phantasms special skills, but he can't use the users techniques as a whole.
He frantically attacked Archer, and ''overpowered'' him. In ubw he frantically attacked quickly, before gilga could retaliate.
Shirous fighting style doesn't have anything to do with the weapon he uses, but he can use the special skills..
The strongest servant was actually Alexander.. The only reason he died was cause his chairot was destroyed by saber... Without his chairot (The symbol of him being a rider.) he lost about 50% of his combat strength!..
Damn Alexander was the most charismatic character here.. -.-

And guess what, Excalibur is not up-to-par with EA even if she had enough prana. THe maximum attack point of an A+++ weapon is only two hundred.Excalibur is only A++. EA's max damage is 4000. Excalibur could barely block EA even though Gil deliberately lowered the damage of his sword.

No matter how good he is at range, against Alexander with the Chairot, he could have shortened the distance so fast that it would have gone to melee no matter what..
