  • Was George Liberace's partner?

  • @MPL029 George was his brother!

  • Loverboynik! What famous personality referred to him as that?

  • He had both Talent and Class.

  • He was so talented. He's so sweet in this.

  • I didn't realize there really WAS a brother George.

Now I feel like a dumbkoff!

  • I wish my brother George was here

  • 6 dislikes? good grief.

  • why did ppl in the crowd crack up when one of the ladies said "must be heaven" ?

  • Good thing he drew the piano. Otherwise he would have taken his seat so soon they would have been able to guess that it was someone with only one name.

  • Liberace is buried in the largest and most ornate tomb in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in

the Hollywood Hills. His distinctive signature is scrawled on the front of it and it is made of

white, cararra Italian marble. He is buried inside it along with several other relatives, most

notably his beloved mother. However, his brother George seems to be missing.

  • Arlene was so funny with her deduction!

  • Arlene is lovely. :)

  • I guess she didn't know Ricky Ricardo.

  • Sad part is, it was probably just erased away for the next guest. they probably should have saved all of the celebrity sign-ins.

  • Its best for a celebrity to be guessed early (or give themselves away) so that they are interviewed and have plenty of time to promote their projects...and in this case even bring their brother on stage.

  • Best end of a round EVER, with Arlene guessing out of the blue. I could watch this over and over. (And have!)

  • Peter Lawford was a HOTTIE ! One of the most handsome men EVER!

  • As a young boy he injured his hand so badly the doctor wanted to amputate a finger but his mother refused. Thank goodness.

  • Arlene Francis was the best What's My Line player ever, no questions asked, hands down. Nobody else would just pluck somebody out of thin air so masterfully, and as for Liberace, well, what can I say? A brilliant pianist and a very classy man.

  • We all watched The Liberace Show-the whole family, and my piano teacher in the 50's. We all knew he was gay. We all didn't care. The skill was so impressive. How did we know? We speculated by his mannerisms. Again, our enjoyment was his playing and yes, the pleasant, sweet way he presented the music. I own over 30 albums. A "monster" of a pianist and entertainer.

  • I love, Love, LOVE Arlene!

  • omg is that peter lawford<3

  • His autograph was a work of art.

  • @75amoeba as was he

  • i remember liberace appearing at wrestlemania

  • RIP..Lee, you are a great one and you do a outstanding Dave Thomas.(SCTV)

  • He sure had a sense of fun.

  • He just never found the right girl

  • @MerleOberon Oh Yeah And you know he looked for "Her" for 69 years Ps Dont Miss the new Liberace Movie with Michael Douglas Coming Out (He he ) this year. I think Michael plays a Homosexual?

  • Arlene Francis again!! You can't get ANYTHING past her!! What a gem!

  • The ultimate duo would be Liberace on one piano and Elton John on the piano! talk about dueling pianos and flashy showmen!

  • @hibernianish with Little Richard, too !

  • Liberace was very talented, no doubt about that. But idiots can't help but bring up his sexual orientation.

  • @leavetheherbitalone

... we're not idiots, but hey, you have to admit Liberace was a FLAMING and FLAMBOYANT butt-boy. I am not judging or insulting, mind you. But he made his "preferences" overly obvious.

  • @cheeriosinabowl yes you are

  • Liberace was very talented, no doubt about that. But queerer than a $3 dollar bill dipped in perfume.

  • Peter Lawford said Tab Hunter! LOL! The crowds reaction shows just how popular Liberace was! Gay entertainers continue to fascinate and entertain us to this day!

  • REMEMBER, Liberace NEVER admitted being gay. Some people might have suspected it.

  • Excellent!

  • Very true....I think that in that era they were better off not wearing it on their sleeve. Why does it have to be out there? It's a personal part of your life, your sex life.

  • Funny what you notice when you know some facts of history when they were leaving Liberace shook hands his brother kissed the hands of the women... just something I noticed

  • Say what you want about the man, he was very talented...and funny!

  • WOW love the signature! The piano is incredible!

  • Love this guy on the piano!

  • What a handsome man! Talent in spades! R.I.P. ( Love the candelabra! : ) )

  • @Frank19154 George is Liberace's older brother

  • Who is 'George? Isn't it interesting that he was just accepted in the 50's no big deal!

  • @frank19154 It really wasn't such a big deal because.....lot's of people had brothers back then.

  • @frank19154 I can understand why you interpreted George being his partner. Current viewers wouldn't know he had made his brother (and family) part of his fame.

It is fascinating to me that in an ultra-conservative decade like the 1950s (where people were accused of being Communists just for being intellectual) and when homosexuality was a taboo subject, that 3 of the biggest stars of the era were gay: Lee Liberace, Rock Hudson & Johnny Mathis. Isn't history amazing?! :o)

  • @crooner62 Can we add Montgomery Cliff?

  • @jglammi most definitely yes!

  • @crooner62 life is strange cruel even

  • @MrDors70 - but also fascinating. How people loved Liberace and Johnny Mathis! I wonder if they were sensing the qualities that (underneath) were in need of coming into the mainstream? The gentleness, creativity, the "artist"? Or did they just love their talent?

  • George was his brother.

  • Great with the chalk too, he was a very talented gracious, humble and generous man. Supported at least 29 families and countless charities.

  • TALENTED MAN!!! LIBERACE!!

  • Liberace was so opulent, it seems a disappointment to see him only in black and white, despite the time period.

  • LOVE HIM!!!

  • I think Arlene was just as lovely inside as she was outside

  • Me thinks Liberace has way more class than Elton John;

  • @gyrene1966 Well, Elton John was pretty lame on SNL, so I have a feeling Liberace might have done better

  • @okonh0wp

Flamboyant, unpredictable & ahead of his time. Underrated on account of sexual preference, IMO.

  • @gyrene1966 I was young a the time but I remember my father taking my grandmothers and my mother to see him live. He WAS a very big deal and very popular and It seemed to me his orientation was never a hindrance to his success. I didn't think it was ever really out there or mentioned, so it was not an issue. But i was not an adult at the time.

  • @gyrene1966 And slept with about twice as many men :o) His parties were the talk of all Hollywood, especially with all the hot boys as young as 15 years old.

  • @gyrene1966 no just different both grand

  • I love this show! We don't have anything this candid and cool nowadays! Liberace was fabulous! It was amazing he was guessed out after only two minutes! That's how popular he was!

  • My mother loved him!

  • two minutes in, damn hahaha

  • Lubbock, Texas... there's someone there I wish was on this show...

  • that was such a HUGE reception !!!!!!!!!!!!!

that was his regular signature. he used it all the time!

  • @nikonguy102 Don't let that be a problem for you. He was famous. My guess is you're not.

  • @nikonguy102 HOMO... is this a problem for you? Despite his sexual persuasion he should be recognized for the great taent he was.

  • You have to hand it to him; Liberace kept an amazing grace and sense of humor about his obvious sexual identity. But you couldn't ignore him. He was as classy an entertainer as there ever was. AND quite generous.

  • Peter Lawford had a great voice!

  • You don't see that type of class in show business much anymore!

  • ppl loved Liberace so much, they didnt really care that he was gay from what I can remember as a child. They ragged on everyone else, but no one ragged on Liberace. He was cool about furniture.I remember reading that he use to pick up pieces that ppl would throw out-take them home-fix em up & give them a home,,lol He was a garbage picker..lol So am I if something can be saved! I thought that was so coll.Liberace turned me into a trash-picker..LOL My apt is beautiful too! Didnt have to buy much! lol

  • It must have been so hard being a gay man during this time period; nowadays you can be gay and no one cares too much except for Christian fundamentalists and homophobic creeps but at the time it was considered a psychiatric disorder and they put people in jail for it. I'm not sure when it stopped being illegal but I know Lenny Bruce made jokes about it in the 50's: "What's the punishment for being homosexual? Put them in prison with a lot of other men."

  • He really did seem to be such a sweet person

  • THAT WAS FAST

  • He was a great showman and artist. He gave America a great appreciation for the great classics...Everyone adored him.

  • A: are you gay??

    B: LIBERACCE: Yes

    A: YOU ARE LIBERACCE

    A: YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

  • Does anyone else think he sounds like Mr. Rogers?

  • @JMein13074 More like a male Carol Channing. But yes, Mr. Rogers too.

  • Great guess!

  • Gay + Piano equals piano masters. Liberace, Freddy Mercury, Elton John etc.

  • That was the coolest sign-in, ever.

  • @Luv2Dnce4 did you see dali's?

  • He had one of the loudest ovations ever. Would have liked to have seen him perform live.

  • An amazing performer, & who cares if he was Gay?? I'm straight, & I loved the guy !! Wolfsky9

  • under 40 seconds...best sign in

  • Gay or not he could play the piano like no one else. What a talent.

  • True! Who should care about his sexuality in 2011? I first remember Liberace as a child watching him as the villian Chandell in a Batman episode in 1967. Let's face it, if entertainers and actors like Liberace had tried to be poster boys for the gay community in their time, both heterosexuals and homosexuals would have missed out on a great talent. The truth is that people who have commented on him being a coward are too scared themselves to show their real names!

  • Doesn't matter if he was gay. Who cares? He had talent. He was a true performer! And, he could sure play better than you, or anyone else! The haters just post their stupidity because they don't have any talent whatsoever to offer this world, so they feel compelled to scribble their hate...

  • aww he seems so sweet and gentle.

  • Liar, liar, panties on fire! Set gay rights back a decade when he lied in court.

  • He was the greatest piano player in the world, and what an awesome entertainer! Good personality and a great showman! So sad that he died of AIDS, he was a good man, may he rest in piece! I do not care if he was gay, he is still one of the most talented piano players in the world! Nothing of God is gay, but God loves everyone. I think that his signature was real cool!

  • Someone who truly loved to entertain his fans. He could play any genre too.

  • second best signature after dali

  • @MRSUMONE I agree. The piano thing was so cool, I wish I had a signature like that!

  • so scripted.

  • He reminds me of the Vampire grandpa from the Munsters!!

  • I always thought it was too bad these guests signed in on a chalkboard. Just think if they'd signed on a big piece of paper and were preserved, what a wonderful legacy and piece of history.

  • @justsailingalong It wasn't really a chalkboard. It was a roll of black paper. You'll notice when they walked off, the signature was already gone. The paper would be rolled up on a crank for the next guest. And, yes, they did save them. A few years ago, they were all for sale on eBay, believe it or not. You could have bought the signature you see being written here, if you had the money. They're probably all gone by now.

  • @RRaquello Wow, that's great information. Thank you for sharing it. I do wish I could buy some of those famous signatures.

  • LOVE this clip for the out-of-nowhere guess!

  • He always reminded me of a pro wrestler.

  • Is that right, at least my lifestyle is respectable.

  • He was a delightful genuinely warm wonderful TALENTED Human being period!

  • Absolutely one of a kind, please save the Liberace Museum, it would be a tragedy if future generations lost the opportunity to see a genius.

  • i liek him. he did sex with guys. he is cool. thx

  • Yea, he was gay, but he didn't wear it on his sleve. I certainly didn't approve of his lifestyle, but he sure knew how to play a piano!

  • @rrbond07 Gay people have lives just like everyone else. You'd be more wise and accurate to reserve terms like "lifestyle" for persons who are into sports or pottery or tornado chasing. And the reason he didn't wear it on his sleeve in those days is because he would have been a pariah and never have been popular no matter how talented he was. Something to think about.

  • @rrbond07 I'll bet there are alot of people who wouldn't be too thrilled with your lifestyle either.

  • I will always remember Liberace. A great pianist that is to be respected and admired. He gave so much to his audience, and I am luck to have seen him in person..

  • Yes indeed--his popularity was remarkable.

No other popular genre pianist ever had such fame, fortune and gave so much joy.

    Women adored him.

  • @maxreger100 Well, not untill Freddie Mercury came on the scene, both amazeing awesome talented men, sighhhhh

  • @rockinrobintweets Yes, but Liberace was only flamboyant in his later years.

Liberace was actually cast in the straight romantic lead in a movie entitled "Sincerely Yours". The studios wanted to cash in on his popularity, but it certainly looks ludicrous now.

I believe thousands of women in the 1950's believed he was just a very nice, straight man.

  • @maxreger100 Well, also in general people didnt pry into a person sex life be they gay or streight..sure if a celberty marrried it was news but they didnt...go into a person s bedroom so to speak/ It use to be what you did in private / bedroom was your personal bussiness, not the whole world s, so no one was LOOKING for someone to be streight or gay either one / either way. If you had talent and they like you, if you semed like a nice person

  • @maxreger100 CONTUNED.......That is what the ladies and the public in general cared about. There use to be such things as privatecy, class, none of your bussiness and not haveing to PROVE your sexuality because if you were talented that was what mattered

  • @rockinrobintweets If he "came out" back then he'd vanish in a heartbeat. Wish we still had morals.

  • @oldfart387 I'm openly Gay--- I think I'm very moral, thank you!

  • @ALDEREK59 Not according to God you aren't. Sorry.

  • @oldfart387 True. But as I stated in general you didnt PUBLICLY take about your love / sex life back then. Shoot they didnt even say PREGANT when Lucy was pregant on the I LOVE LUCY show, and she was married for years to Desi / Ricky both on and off the show. . I dont want to take it to that extent but some class would be welcomed. I just dont have the need to know EVERYTHING

  • This was a wonderful human being and superb entertainer. I'm 64 years old and remember him well when he performed on TV.My parents never missed his performances. Too bad that this kind of talent and personality is lacking today.

  • @dragontailjunkie agreed,

im 37 and my dad is a phd in music and went to julliard so I knew who he was...i took up cello and bass...i watch youtube vids of him and his playing is so precise and athletic..i used to pick on my paretns back in the 80s for being stuck in the 60s...and now my daughter picks on me about the 80s...but i dunno, the professionalism is gone..seems everyone is a session player now, where are the stars? Same with bass players, kits just not in pop music i think.

  • liberace and little richard the gayest men who ever lived

  • AND IT COST HIM HIS LIFE. GO FIGURE...

  • All I can think of is Sue Sylvester, "Sneaky Gays"

  • Ah, Liberace. Often wishes his brother George was there, and this time he actually was.

  • She was very yself-conscious about her high forehead and she had a very round face. I don't think her hair stylist did a flatering job with her hair but that was the 50s for ya.

  • The piano when he sings his name is SOOO COOL!

  • died of AIDS. Go figure

  • I actually wonder if sometimes they gave hints etc to the panel. sometime they guess straight to, or the questions they ask are specific of the guest! just a thought. . .

  • @atgblue1 Not usually. Dorothy Kilgallen was a newspaper columnist, and she, Arlene Francis and Bennett Cerf certainly read the newspaper and knew who was coming to New York to promote something or star in something that week.

  • @wkyken ahh i see. that would help explain how sometimes they were right on from the beginning.

  • uh...he was told to 'come in and sign in, please.' NOT to draw a picture, too!

  • @VTMCompany that was his trademark..people exspected it.

  • the ULTIMATE over-the-top signature!!!

  • One of the happiest people I've seen on "What's My Line".

  • Any more Paul Winchell episodes as a panelist?

  • pure showman! love the piano

  • So that's George, huh?

  • Well damn, he drew that piano perfectly! lol

  • People had cool signatures in this show.

  • @markuspetteri At the age these people went to school one of the subjects was "penmanship." In the days before ubiquitous typing, having legible and attractive hand writing was taken rather seriously.

  • @IsaacBickerstaffEsq yeah, it was a lot more important than being a decent person.

  • In Las Vegas, I took my mother to see his show. One of the greatest entertainers ever.

  • FLAMING....

  • Flippin' sweet signature:)

  • If you can't move beyond the gay stuff and recognize the greatness of this man as a performer of the first rank, go to the back of the class. I wonder how he might have ranked if he focused on being a so-called "serious" performer in the classical vein.

  • My favourite WML clip of all time! Love the way Arlene guesses him!

Second favourite would be the one where George Burns lies through the whole segment. Hilarious.

  • He must have been good in art class to make an awesome drawing like that!

  • Bitchin' signature.

  • Agreed. I wonder if he autographed pictures for fans in the same way.

  • @tucsonia Yes, I witnessed Liberace autographing photos including the piano drawing. He usually always tried to include it, if he was not rushed for time, that is.

  • Elvis and Liberace were showbiz pals. They met in 1956 when Elvis performed at the Frontier Hotel in Las Vegas.

  • Who is George?

  • Liberace`s brother.

  • Comment removed

  • @Warwickcain - George was his brother.

  • A great showman.

  • just great!

  • Gayest man who ever lived? ;)

  • @KenfromDublin No just a gay man ...So (YAWN) What (YAWN) gay people exist you know

  • @Lennonlover06

Yawn..... sorry, too boring a question to bother .. even bigger yaaaawn...wasting my time thinking of an answer.
