I never quite got why rebel fighters engage a superior number of Star Destroyers, each having expandable amounts of fighters themselves. How are they a threat?
This was such an awesome game. I remember playign it online, I was even in a league, we would fight against other leagues, this was a lot of fun. It is now incompatible with the latest versions of Windows and LucasArts never came up with a replacement.
legendary series that MUST BE REMADE.. Dont' change the difficulty or anything weird like that. Just update the graphics keep everything else the same.
I still love this game! No matter how old it gets. I only wish they (the game company) do a make over on the graphics and I am a happy camper and ready to play again.
I used to play in an XvT and compete in tournaments on the msn zone. I've played this game for so many hours. It's so sick. I want them to make a modern version where you can command the capital ships and their guns. Since servers can hold like 100 people nowadays I think large fleet on fleet action could occur and communication would be a huge part of a new game. So much potential with XvT. it was such a big part of my life at one point
The problem is that they've never managed to make any space combat games that are this good. Nowadays they make things like Battlefront 2 which was lousy, or Rogue Squadron Rebel Strike, where they keep making you fly rightside-up instead of it being like a space simulator. And they never make games now where you can redirect power to engines or guns... *sigh*
Agreed, MasterOfHobbiton. X-Wing, TIE Fighter, X-Wing vs TIE Fighter and X-Wing Alliance were the only true Star Wars space simulations. Everything else is either arcadic, non-canonical or possibly both (as is the case with Battlefront II). XWA had the exception that it nerfed certain Imperial units just for balance purposes (such as the TIE Defender), and this of course can't be considered canon.
Another mistake was to make the TIE Interceptor only have 4 laser cannons, where as in the movies it actually has a whooping 10. This was West End Games' mistake and possibly was also influenced by balance. It's since then been discarded as saying those 4-laser cannon variants were "earlier versions" of the T/I. Perhaps the biggest flaw in the series is however, that the Imperial ships have way too few fighters compared to their canonical stats. Also, they don't launch them all at the same time.
4 on the wingtips, 2 below the cockpit, 2 between the wingtips. Yes, 72. And how many times do you actually see 72 TIEs from one ISD? Also, the squadrons/wings/flights (whatever they're called) are too small. Usually they have 3-4 fighters, where as they should have 12 (IIRC - if not 12, then it was 6).
And finally, difficulty level determines the skill level of AI pilots, where as according to canon the Imperial pilots were almost always massively superior to the Rebel pilots due to their superb training (the galaxy's finest training, I might add).
Yes, but it wouldn't be much fun if you got vaped constantly, hence difficulty level.
As for craft, well it depends - this game engine was built to run on mid 1990s PCs, so it could only have 32 craft in action at any one time. Still, squadrons were usually 12 craft, they may launch in 4 waves of 3 but like i said, hardware wasn't powerful enough then.
X-Wing Alliance has a battle where an ISD launches all its fighters pretty much within 60 seconds, you should try it ;-)
I haven't played the campaign of XWA in years, but I might do so. Mainly because it nerfed the Imperial stuff (T/A and T/D) from their canon stats (those shown in the game TIE Fighter, and hence the Databank and Wookieepedia) and because it's played from the Rebel side.
Anyhow, they really should make a new X-Wing game. Unfortunately LucasFilm/LucasArts seems to think that the space flight combat sim genre is all but dead...
It did, but not by a huge amount (just a small speed decrease, some shield reduction on the T/A), and you could use a third party editor to fix that ;-) likewise with anything else that was nerfed.

even worse is how a squad of Xwings take on Avenger Squad and several Star Destroyers
bjanowski1 2 years ago 2
This is one of those intros that leaves you pissed-off behind, because it started with pure awesomeness and ended seconds later.
This intro had more epicness in it than any of those goddamn new episodes for Star Wars ... and still it was TOO FUCKING SHORT.

I suggest you go back and play mission 6 of the prologue in X-Wing Alliance and tell me its easy or the imperials are too weak :p

Thought it had 6? 2 centred, 4 wingtip. As for too few fighters, as far as I know ISDs always had 72, Victory-class held 24, frigates held 24...

Oh and the next squadron is never launched until the previous one is destroyed, another "unrealistic" thing.
It's probably hard only because there are so damn many enemies. :)

Lets just re-name it to Lucas Farts and we'll be closer to their current status.
