But yeah, Rocket Raccoon is quite big in the modern comics. He's been one of the center characters in the Cosmic part of the Marvel Universe. He's had well over 100 appearances, while Shuma's had 20 appearances at the most.

That sounds like a concept that was brainstormed either in a party or during a hangover period. It worked out well, but you got to admit that Rocket Raccoon's origins are downright unconventional.
