wow I never even thought about it before, I read manga all the time, and quite a lot of Japanese writings. I know they read it backwards relative to western scripts. Do they read notation backwards on traditional Japanese instruments as well??? That would be a total head fuck for me lol.

@drv30 it is very traditional for girls to play japanese insrtuments. boys usually don't play them because of this.

Its kind of like the situation with the western piano/virginal... young women were expected to learn the instrument as a means of showing refinement, however; obviously it is played by both men and women... Koto is an integral part of "Gagaku" which has women performers now, but traditionally was an all male ensemble.

there is a chord progression, dummies! Part of the reason that there aren't all three voices playing at times is because of the ambiguous feeling created by all of the perfect intervals (fourths, fifths, and octaves). Chord progressions indicate tonal centers, which may not be as important in other cultures than your own. Think outside the box, brother.
