What a waste! Finally a battery grip that allows you to keep the battery in the camera, potentially allowing for a three battery capacity, and Nikon decide to take a battery out of the grip! I mean, fair enough, you're not going to blow through 3 batteries in all but the most demanding (and elongated) of sporting events and weight its a consideration but I would have liked the option of 3 batteries.
I had a Nikon D-90 and I bought an aftermarket grip for it and then was told by a local Nikon Authorized Service Center that running aftermarket grips on your Nikon could void the warranty. So when I upgraded to a D300s I decided to play it safe and bite the bullet and pay the extra bucks and buy the Nikon MB-D10. Just my thoughts.
Very cool. Although I don't like how Nikon gouges us with the price fo the high capacity battery and the end cap, not to mention the quick charger for the battery.
Thanks for posting, I see there are other grips sold on Ebay which work with the D300 models and was wondering if anyone has tried them out or better to stick with genuine Nikon? the cost is a factor but I'm more concerned with its reliability as well, thanks.
Very expensive for nikon brand! I got only for 100 dollars and the same features and function for the battery grip. I will not recommend getting the branded one. Trust me!!!
That's how it is on the D100 and D200. Personally, I prefer that. I'd rather have a grip that slots into the battery slot so that I can access BOTH my batteries without having to remove the grip.
It seems a step backwards to me to have a design like this that means you have to remove the grip to replace both batteries.
I origionally got one for my D300 and is one of the reasons I added a D700 as my primary rather than get the D3. Now it feels really odd not having the grip on there.
Easy to remove to de-bulk the camera when you want to travel light or not let on to Jo Public that you have a pro camera.
The EL-4a is the D3 battery (cheap) and so needs a D3 charger (expensive). Best to stick with the AA batteries :o)
@ Guys discussing 8FPS without the grip - it can be done (and I use it almost daily on press work) by using your FUNC button set to bracket and setting up an 8 bracket shot with a zero difference. Shame it's not easier to get at.
I'm a Canon user, and slightly bias towards any other make of camera, no other camera model really attracts me like Canon does.
However, one thing i've noticed in this video is that on the grip, it's got curved bits on the ends which makes it appear to fit a lot more snug against the body?
I think that's awesome, I don't think Canon's have that kind of 'snug fitting shape', you can clearly tell they've got a battery grip on it which i'm not too keen on.
the "little peaces" he is talking about: the pro batt. is 109 dollars, the bl-3 batt chamber cover is 35 dollars, and the charger for the pro batt is (mh-21) 120 dollars. so its really not worth it if you can just us rechargeable AA's
The bigger battery, the EN-EL4A is actaully the battery from cameras such as the D2xs and D3. It costs the most if you don't already own a pro camera but, if you do, all you need is a BL-3.
i know that the d300 is water resistance, i was wondering if i put on the mb-d10 battery grip, would it also be water resistance

Is it normal for the grip to work without the battery, mine works with
the battery only in the camera body.

Good review. I didn't know about the vertical shutter button until now. That alone is worth it.

that seems like a much easier design then the lower end nikon slr's. u have to take the battery door off my d40 to install it D:

anyone try the phottix kosmo its about 50 bucks for the cahrger and battery
?
lcrazyaznl 3 years ago
There is no reason to fork out the cash for el-4a battery plus a charger. $400 will buy a lot of AA's, not to mention you can get a used el3 for $25.

Excuse me sir but what is that on your lens? It looks like something you would use to mount the lens on a Monopod/ Tripod?
What is it called? Is that the thing that you use so you can rotate the camera to take vertical shots on a Monopod/ Tripod?

The D300 can shoot at 8fps without the grip, however i still prefer one, but no need for those expensive d3 battary

im not sure but i think you could do 8fps with regular nikon bateries
r2d2skate 3 years ago
No, either you have to use the AAA-batteries, or the D3-battery, which cost a lot. You do not get extra FPS with the original D300-batteries.

You could also use the AC adaptor for the 8 fps feature.
Shutterguy 3 years ago
How is that possible when the charger holds the battery, instead of plugging it into the camera?
dryan2 3 years ago
It's a seperate kit, which you plug into the DC input on the camera =)
