In engineering we call that a destructive test, after the test you have a broken part but at least you know it was good until you broke it...........seems like a bad test for relationships.......just saying :) lol
To noonobaggins, you're welks! To NolanBryanLynch, in case it was missed, your first point was more or less my point; when I asked KeshHarp "How is it possible to be in the style of the "old" sean-nos nua?" I was asking this "How is it possible to be in the style of the old new old way?" Which is what his "old sean-nos nua" would have to mean? Your second point intrigues me, maybe it's just semantics, but what, could it be said, is the style(s) that Caitlín Maude actually sings in?
O'Connor goes on to explain further her take on the song in her album notes, "...For me the song is really about the love of the people of Ireland for their culture and their experience of having to let the culture transform in order to be born again as something more joyous. That is what I believe is taking place right now in Ireland - a God-sent miracle. The new culture of Ireland, as represented by the narrator in disguise, shows that the Ireland we romantcised for so long about is going..."
@vernonaicht "...to be something much better than we were taught to long for, which was an Ireland united by bullshit, instead of united by love. From war or bad circumstance, Jah comes in disguise as people in need of our aid, with all the golden gifts they bring."
The song is credited as "Trad. Arr: O'Connor/Lunny/Shannon/Branch/Kiely/O Geibheannaigh"
It is indeed an Irish song, and in the style of the old sean-nos nua. It's more traditionally sung by buskers, so the melody and tempo can range a wee bit far and wide, depending on the particular singer. The tradition was for a lover to disguise theirself and to see if their love has remained true before they revealed themself. Equal number of songs of women and men sneaking about..*Ireland having universal sufferage millenia before other nations, so don't feel slighted, girls!
First, sean nos nua is not a style of music; KeshHarp is thinking of sean nos, the old way. Sean Nos Nua is simply the title of the album, in which Sinead takes some old songs and makes them "nua," or new. Second, while lovely, this is not sean nos. Look up some Caitlin Maude videos. THAT'S sean nos.
@steandar I'm sorry I do not know the answer to that. I'm not sure that Sinead O'Connor wrote the piece. The theme on the song I have heard before by other artists and so not an Irish theme but this tune and song may be just her's so it would be written about an Irish lad called away to fight and return to find his true love still true. I love this the way Sinead performs this anyway.
Glad you liked it, I'm sure your young bride would love to hear it. (Remember to film + upload your singing)
@noonoobaggins The song is from O'Connor's truly beautiful album "Sean-Nos Nua". These are her notes about the song in the album "There is a tradition in Irish songs, of a young soldier returning home from war in disguise to see if his woman has been true by pretending he is a friend of the lover, and that the lover has died. Rather cruel really! And for some reason all the men singning in these songs think it's ok to come home and pretend they're dead and then say 'Ha ha, I was only joking...'"
@vernonaicht Thanks for the info, I know I have heard a similar vein in the words before but did not know the history to this track. Yes, It's pretty cruel, I don't think my wife would have become my wife with a trick like that ;-) and I have to say I love this track and Sinead is sublime on it IMHO.
What a delight to find this song on YouTube! I've been searching now and then for years. At last it is here. : ) It's not one of her better known pieces, so it's hard to find. It has always been a personal favorite. Thank-You for posting it in this beautiful video! Cheers, Brian.

I love this story and song so much. I heard his last cry
“If you were here lovely Nancy I’d be willing to die”
And as I told her this story, in anguish she flew,
And the more that I told her, the paler she grew
So I smiled on my Nancy, ‘twas I broke your heart,
In your fathers garden, that day we did part
And this is the truth, and the truth I declare,
Oh here’s your love token the gold ring I wear.
