it is really cool how you have a dogface and cleaner shrimp in the same tank. they seem to be using each other really well. i wish i could put a dogface or a porcupine puffer in my tank but i am afraid that they would eat my fire shrimp. those shrimp are expensive.
These seem to be more civil than other shrimp. I've had pistol shrimp and peppermint shrimp and neither of them were very friendly, accept to a gody. XD
Well, they eat a lot and poop a lot, so you have to ensure your filtration system can handle it, high nitrate levels can result. Also they can be destructive, knocking over rocks. I would advise against putting them in a tank with hard corals, a puffer can easily break them and/or munch on them.
Aside from that, their cute, friendly and fun to have around.
Actually the worst "expensive shrimp eaters" in my experience are dottybacks, such as Neon Dottyback and Orchid Dottback. I could not keep a cleaner until my dottyback passed on. The fish would take every opportunity to ambush and take a bite out of the shrimp.
Same way with my GSP's and the ghost shrimp i feed them, the longest a ghost shrimp has ever lived in my tank is probably like a day or so. They get so fat when they do eat shrimp though.
@pedromaticus Dotty backs, are indeed mean bastards. And I realize this video and comments are old, and I hate to be -this- guy... but to me it looks like the main reason the puffer hasn't taken a bite is because he looks rather stressed/sick. I dont mean to poke at your fish keeping, but you can clearly see the ich on the puffer. Also he is uncharacteristically chill for a puffer and his eyes look a bit cloudy. Maybe he is just new to the tank.
@jcubed31 anyway, thanks for the video and I hope the match up worked out well. For new viewers of this video, be careful of pairing puffers with any inverts.
WOW thats cool. I have a huma huma trigger and a stars and stripe puffer, i would love to have some shrimp or hermits in my tank! any ideas? should i just buy some cleaners and see what happens?
Though some fish will eat cleaners, most seem to know somehow that cleaner shrimp are beneficial to them and can rid them of parasites. Some fish will actively seek out shrimp that aren't normally thought of as cleaners, like Peppermint Shrimp. I even had a Triggerfish that would ask for a cleaning from a large Hermit Crab. The crab would just get annoyed and bat the fish away when it came close.
would the poison kill you if you touched it and accidentally put your finger in your mouth? I have always been curious to know that.

If you stick your hand in front of a cleaner shrimp, it will usually climb on and start picking at your skin. It feels funny.
