  • By the way River City Bicycles are based in Portland Oregon if you want to pay them a visit for a bike service or any repairs.

  • how do you get up and down buckles out

  • @joelwhitelaw1 Easy. Loosen the spokes on the dented side of the wheel and tighten the spokes on the bulging side of the wheel.

  • Thanks for making the video....

  • thanks guys

  • besides wheel truing is their a word just called truing

  • @mapleraptors technically yes. But, for all intents and purposes, no.

  • Waste of time. Just ruined a 3 hundred dollar bike. Take it to a bike shop and dont try to do this. It WON'T work,

  • @Scormann3518 How did it ruin your bike?

  • @Scormann3518 you're retarded. thats probably why.

  • Thank you very much.

  • @shotox21 You are welcome. And if you can do me a favor here: bit (dot) ly (slash) crankthecoast

  • Would it help if I used lubrication on the nipples. I did hear a moan as I tweaked them. Not mine of course.

  • I tried this and messed up the best bike I've ever had a Mongoose from Walmart

  • @hypnos315

Hard to imagine a Walmart bike coming with anything other than badly built wheels to start with. Every department store bike I've ever seen came delivered with uneven spoke tension to start. Walmart bikes are junk--they're no bargain.

  • i bent the wheel on my Huffy! lol

  • does wheel truing matter as much if you have disk brakes?

  • @rtsoccerplayer probably not. But a true wheel works more effieciently and if it's way out it can lead to broken spokes.

  • @pdxktv cool thanks!

  • @pdxktv if your wheel is not true your wheel can cause your bike to shake whether or not it has disk brakes. disk brakes are nice if you do dent your rim while you are trail riding thought.

  • Okay, this works if you watch carefully.

Good point about settling the rotational windup, something nobody else I viewed mentioned.

    Threadlocker? seems exxxtreme.

See ya on the streets, punkins!

  • Nice video. You can see which way you turn to make the adjustment to loosen or tighten but verbalising would make the video a little better. Thanks this got my wheel a bit straighter. :)

  • Hi, I have a buckled rim, but have managed to get it nearly 100% true, unfortunately it has a flat spot, is there a way to get rid of this?

    Thanks

  • Var tools (French) used to make a radial low spot pull tool, or at ground zero you can try to hammer with a plastic/rubber mallet the low spot out (thakes practice but doable as I serviced many such wheels)

  • Only 1/4 turn at a time? It would take 3 hours to true a wheel making such tiny adjustments.

  • not really a typical 32hole wheel laced Cross 3 takes about 8-12 Min rarely more than 20 unless something catstrophic like a hydobolic parabola

  • Easy to use a magic marker (Sharpie) to mark "high" spots. Can get different colors. Remove with rubbing alcohol or carb cleaner.

Also, wheels that are too badly whacked will not true properly, the spokes will be too unevenly tensioned. (From experience). There comes a time when you have to get a new wheel.

  • I've adjusted my spokes so the brake don't touch. But now I got an oval wheel. Damn!

  • #1 turning spokes clockwise tightens, counterclockwise loosens. Always adjust spokes in pairs ie. tighten clockwise 1/4 turn and the adjacent spoke counter clockwise 1/4 turn.

Brake pads often move when truing a wheel. Take a piece of chalk (hold against frame) and spin the wheel rapidly while slowly moving the chalk until it touches the rim. Using chalk makes it easy to find where the wheel is out of true and is easy to remove and reapply for the next true check.

  • this website is screwed. Can't edit my post and post the changes. Youtube only lets me delete it. Go figure!

To correct my post... clockwise loosens (not tightens) and counter clockwise tightens, not loosens.

  • @class1dave you are smart

  • @class1dave

thank you man i was watching 5-6 videos just to find out which side i need to turn spokes! And since i don't have proper tools it takes a while to turn them any direction. Uploader if you make tutorial video cover basic things.

  • i know a lot about bmx bikes but not about the spokes...occasionally the back end of my bike makes some weird noises that sounds like the spokes....but how do i know if the spokes are too loose?

  • just feel them with your fingers. They should be not have much play, if any.

  • river city is the shit...i went there when i was in portland and it's one of the coolest shops i've ever been to!

  • How badly can a rim be off before you need to replace it

  • I've seen an awful bend put back in order through force and spoke tightening - but the wheel was never perfect again. It depends on what you can live with and how far gone the wheel is.

  • mine just rubs the brake pads and its a pretty new bike

  • Shouldn't be a problem then. Get a spoke wrench that fits at a bike shop and play around with it. It takes some practice.

  • alrighty, thank you

  • What if like your rim has a bump in it?

Like moves up and down as well as sideways

  • You might be able to bend it back but there is a good chance you'll have replace it. Bring it to a good shop and have it scoped out.

  • Cool, thanks for your help.

  • Why didn't you shoot outside, at night...?

  • how do u re spoke wheels ?

  • look up some videos about lacing wheels. but essentialy you need to take the tire, tube, and rim tape off the rim. then there are threaded brass nipples that are inserted into the rim. pull out the damaged spoke and nipple. then go to you local bike shop and have them order you the correct amount and length of spoke you need (dont forget nipples) and relace the damaged spoke into your rim true and your good! HOPE THAT HELPED good luck. and if all else fails take it the lbs they know all

  • hey great vid i learned alot

what will happen if the spokes are too lose or too tight ?

  • spokes that are to loose can break off and put extra strain onto properly trued spokes. so its important to make sure your wheel is properly trued and dished otherwise you can break spokes. and spokes that are to tight can pull the wheel out of true and cause other damage to the wheel and possibly your bike

  • Pretty good video on truing for the general recreational cyclist. Thanks for explaining about tightening AND loosening and that it relates to one side of the hub or the other.

I just tried it on my bike and got it out of whack, but kept at it and made it fairly true-ed again. It was a little confusing to figure out which way was tight/loose, but I picked that up from another video. It's from the view point of looking down (like through the tire at the nipple).

    Thanks.

  • + Best to take the tyre off first before you true, if your spoke ends aren't recessed like on the wheel in the demo.

  • Is it possible to true a wheel without a spoke wrench?

  • you guys are cool cause other bike shops just want too take you money but you actually tell people how to fix them

  • it helps if u take off the tire and tube when u true it

  • For quick adjustments, I think it is ok to leave the tire on as long as the tire is deflated.

  • This was a great video. Thank you. It was not clear to how to select *which* spokes to tighten once I find when the wheel veers towards the brakepad.

  • agreed

  • i dont kno for sure but i think ud wanna tighten the ones on the oposite side of the misalignment but ive only done it once and its been years

  • good stuff. like the bikes on the roof. thanks

  • how about a brake tuning vid? then sell em on cd's lol.

  • Thanks for the tip. I'll give you another one... what about you talking about the ideal tire pressure. It is not that I have had problems with it, but a little advice could really help!

  • Thanks, out on the back porch truing a wheel from a Canadian Tire bike - i'm from Toronto - that I garbage picked last week.

  • Awesome vid!! thanks guys!! What is a good reference point, if you have Disk Brakes?

  • hey umm to your diskbrake question well i have a downhill bike and what i do is cut out a piece of cardboard that fits right in between your fork and frame of the wheel and then turn it slowly and check, u dont have to use cardboard w/e u wanna use as long as its steady so it dosent move when u turn your wheel

  • Excellent! Thanks.
