It's literally an environmentalist's sci-fi movie. I saw it in 1974 and thought it was pretty good. But, I've grown very conservative over the last 36 years and came to realize how outlandish the idea is. The movie was well-made for the time and Dern did a great job in portraying a borderline psychotic environmentalist who seems to cry all of the time. The story is easy to follow with a predictable 70s-style downer of an ending. I give it 2 stars.

great ecological message at the time. still potent now. this and soylent green which addressed overpopulation. logan's run dealt with our obsession with youth and beauty. rollerball dealt with corporations running the world instead of companies. great sci-fi not so much for their sfx but for their messages!

haven't seen the bonus features, but having seen Moon, this instantly made me connect the two. Still, nothing negative about it, Moon is a rare gem in the world of shallow cgi movies today.
This is a god-awful trailer, but Silent Running is actually a wonderful movie. The environmental message is a little dated these days, but that doesn't detract from it much.
Brad Douif? John Malcovich? Christain Bale? Adrain Brody? Woody Harlson?
The remake should use the same script. But it should be 70MM and have a much larger budget. But the SFX should not look much different from the original. The SFX should be minimal and not overwhelm the picture.
With long hair and a crazy hippie gaze, Ben Stiller will look just like Freeman Lowell (Bruce Dern) from "Silent Running"... Also, it would be an interesting challenge for Stiller as he's typically playing less-serious characters.

Because it's not flashy like BSG or Star Wars it gets overlooked often. It's a good film nonetheless. I remember seeing it on USA's Night Flight program in the late '80s.
Well, it did inspire George Lucas. R2D2 came from the robot in this film. Lucas even wanted the special effects director to do Star Wars, he didn't but went on for Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Made for 1 million and the effects and sets look stunning..especially when compared to today's cheap looking CGI. More importantly this is a deeply touching movie, it shows most of the human race ( the 3 guys ) for what it is, uncaring about nature & animals and totally driven by materialism. Abit like my generation, well educated but completely stupid, ignorant and materialistic, only interested in shallow 'bling' culture and never noticing the simple beauty in nature...
@SavageGenius135 Star Wars is not sci-fi because it doesn't use science as a central theme. Like exploring the galaxy or time travel. The story of Star Wars could have, just as easily, taken place here on Earth. I small band of rebels taking on an evil empire is not relegated to intergalactic space. It's more of a fantasy, like a fairy tale.
I love this film. It's one of my all-time favorites, but... my God, who wrote this trailer?! "Meet the almost-human drones, amazing companions on a journey beyond the stars." Uh, no, it was a journey beyond the orbit of Saturn, doofus!
And the spoilers! If you've seen the film, you know what I'm talking about.
They'd have been way ahead just showing us a montage set to Baez's vocals, and left it at that. Somebody shoot that narrator, please!

At first I thought this came out in the 80's, and was thinking, "Wow, those effects are laughable for that time." Then I saw when it was made..1971. Those effects are actually SPECTACULAR for 1971. Better than 2001, and nearly on the grade of the first Star Wars movie.
Thoughtful sci-fi film. Dated, but still can relate to the issues and enviromental problems we are now facing. Lowell's desperate actions sums up how badly we will go in saving something so precious to protect and keep. Sad ending though. A lesson to be learned here!
This movie is more relevant today than ever before. Dern is awesome then as now, and Baez, although shrilly is awesome, and beautiful. And - Duey - he deserves an oscar for his performance! Great sci-fi!

Because it's not flashy like BSG or Star Wars it gets overlooked often. It's a good film nonetheless. I remember seeing it on USA's Night Flight program in the late '80s.

Well, it did inspire George Lucas. R2D2 came from the robot in this film. Lucas even wanted the special effects director to do Star Wars, he didn't but went on for Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

I think you are elitist, calling this generation the 'slut generation'. And its depressing what some of your views are. However having said that, i do agree on some points. But, porstituion of getting drunk isn't something to come out of 2009, nor the 1950's, but victorian or even older than that. What you want is to go back to when man played with sticks and stones. Far enough..but I won't accept the 'fact' that things where always as bad as they are now, that's the easy option for people who just don't care & actually like the Godless, moraless World we now have. Have you been out lately? Have you seen the way my Slut Generation go on, their shallow interests & misplaced egos? That is now the majority. I doubt it will make much difference, my Slut generation don't even fear AIDs, which can be pretty much kept under control anyway. Girls are taking the pill like sweets now 'cause fuxxing is now as common as kissing used to be. The Slut generation polute their bodies like this once beautiful planet has been poluted..it's all a vicious cycle. Silent Running's depiction may not happen but this generation are setting up even greater moral and environmental pitfalls, you can see it everywhere.

Which generation is that? I'm a baby boomer (barely: I'm 50, Boom/GenX cusp), and I feel the same way about people my age.
I don't mind 'em polluting their bodies and screwing, however. It's the lack of empathy and other interests that annoy me.

It's that sort of behaviour that causes lack of empathy, when the wild nights turn into ugly morning afters. What's caused our ill feeling or at least, indifference to fellow beings, is pride at what's wrong with us and a steadfast determination to avoid seeing how bad this is; determination to accept and glorify all that's evil in us.

I believe your generation are the same so why do you think my generation and alot younger are now behaving 10 times as worse? We all know what a sorry state morally 'civilised' society is in, the 'me, get drunk, let's fuxx' mentality is not only the norm, it's 'cool'. The lack of empathy for each other comes from this but it has now given way for a lack of empathy for anything, including the planet. I'm also extremely annoyed at the tolal lack of anything soulful from my slut generation.

It hurts God to see this. As each generation gets worse, more and more chaos results. The arrogance in the crew of Silent Running epitomises this-these are some of the types of guys seducing our daughters.
I hope and pray it's the polluted people who suffer and not the planet, for the sake of a distant future generation that'll appreciate nature and look after her.

Yes, each generation is getting worse, that is a fact. I'm not overly religious but it is now trendy of my generation not only to believe there is no God, but to make fun of religion as well. God for me is everywhere in nature, so by my generation polluting there bodies, minds and the countryside they are basically saying 'fuxx you' to the few people left who care. That is why my generation should be offically known as the 'Slut Generation'. They deserve no respect.

I think we're nearing the end, where the pressures to go with the crowd are so great. You don't get accepted if you're modest; though many English women are quite reserved. Perhaps it's only when they're drunk.

I hope your right. It is true, if your modest, quiet or more importantly genuine, you're treated with suspicion, abit like Dern in the movie. People want shallow BS now, dame have they got it! As for English women being reserved, I wish you where right on that, nice girls don't exist anymore, drink and materialism killed that off in the 90's for good. If they only knew they where so much more likable when they were sober and just being themselves. The world needs to be restarted. Sad but true.

I cryed for the little robot at the end 'cause I don't think a human would ever do what it did ( I know it was programmed! ) but you see my point. Even the songs are by a lady who can sing, Joan Baez. If this is remade, you'll have a no talent, corrupt slut like spears or rihanna who couldn't give a fuck about anything ( only money and sex ) on the soundtrack! Believe me, my generation wouldn't get or care about the msg in this movie, they have the materialistic, porno world they want now. Sad.

Made for 1 million and the effects and sets look stunning..especially when compared to today's cheap looking CGI. More importantly this is a deeply touching movie, it shows most of the human race ( the 3 guys ) for what it is, uncaring about nature & animals and totally driven by materialism. Abit like my generation, well educated but completely stupid, ignorant and materialistic, only interested in shallow 'bling' culture and never noticing the simple beauty in nature...

@SavageGenius135 Star Wars is not sci-fi because it doesn't use science as a central theme. Like exploring the galaxy or time travel. The story of Star Wars could have, just as easily, taken place here on Earth. I small band of rebels taking on an evil empire is not relegated to intergalactic space. It's more of a fantasy, like a fairy tale.

I love this film. It's one of my all-time favorites, but... my God, who wrote this trailer?! "Meet the almost-human drones, amazing companions on a journey beyond the stars." Uh, no, it was a journey beyond the orbit of Saturn, doofus!
And the spoilers! If you've seen the film, you know what I'm talking about.
They'd have been way ahead just showing us a montage set to Baez's vocals, and left it at that. Somebody shoot that narrator, please!
Silent Running isn't cheesy, but this trailer is.

At first I thought this came out in the 80's, and was thinking, "Wow, those effects are laughable for that time." Then I saw when it was made..1971. Those effects are actually SPECTACULAR for 1971. Better than 2001, and nearly on the grade of the first Star Wars movie.

Thoughtful sci-fi film. Dated, but still can relate to the issues and enviromental problems we are now facing. Lowell's desperate actions sums up how badly we will go in saving something so precious to protect and keep. Sad ending though. A lesson to be learned here!
