  • LOL the guy with the blue uniform looks like Michael Bay XD

  • great sci fi film, but damn I hate Joan Baez!!!!

  • @DetroitSquirreL I totally agree with you! having endured her music throughout my childhood

  • @DetroitSquirreL Why? Do you have a dislike of classic music?

  • @Transformers2themax lol, no mate..just her 'music' ;)

  • YOU CAN DO IT FREEMAN!!

  • I watched this when I was a kid.

  • Ha, can''t believe Amazon had the Blu-Ray listed for £3.99. Bargain!!

  • purdy gewt moofy

  • hahaha the boxes with feet.... 1:16 xaxaxa

  • Way ahead of its time...

  • Funny how you love things when your a kid, but when you grow up & watch them over again, you come to realize just how utterly stupid they were. Just like this movie.

It's the first environmentalist movie. Putting "the forests", before human life. Showing kids it's okay to kill for mother earth.

And who would put nukes on the pods? Wouldn't they just jettison the pods into deep space, a gas giant, or the sun. The cost of the nukes alone would make it ridiculous expensive.

    Preposterous.

  • @fmscribs its just a movie, .... chill.

  • @TheBehlen,,

    It's just my opinion......you "chill."

  • @TheBehlen It's just a comment.... Chill

  • @TheBehlen

It's just my opinion of a hippie sci-fi movie, so you can "chill" dude.

  • @fmscribs Frank Campanella (uncredited) fu!

  • @bitzofdata

I have no idea what your saying. I don't know or care to know who Frank C. is, nor do I understand

what "fu" means. But if it's in reference to f**k y**, then right back at you.

  • @fmscribs he means Foo! as in I pity the.

  • One of my favourite films of all time, being an environmentalist. Where can I get a copy?

  • @Widgeripoo if you are just trying to only watch it, you can find it here on youtube spilt up into parts. but if youre trying to own it then i do not know, try ebay?

  • @profssrfunk Thanks for the info. As it happens, a friend got it for me from eBay and brought it round to me. Nice pal hey?

  • @robertmark34 No, the ship was named the Valley Forge by the writer, he was surprised to ifnd out later that the aircraft carrier they were going to use ifs also called the valley forge, it was a twilight zone like event.

  • It's literally an environmentalist's sci-fi movie. I saw it in 1974 and thought it was pretty good. But, I've grown very conservative over the last 36 years and came to realize how outlandish the idea is. The movie was well-made for the time and Dern did a great job in portraying a borderline psychotic environmentalist who seems to cry all of the time. The story is easy to follow with a predictable 70s-style downer of an ending. I give it 2 stars.

  • Awesome film in it's days, and still is actual. See it as a prelude to 'Wall-E'.

  • Great movie.

  • What about the forests?

    No.

    Guessing.

  • @Zpartan117John Carbon Based Lifeforms reference?

  • @pppoootttzzz Yup :)

  • @pppoootttzzz hehe

  • was anyone else sent from CNET UK?

  • This movie looks REALLY strange. I'm downloading it now

  • I feel like Joel Hodgson was fairly influenced by this movie when coming up with the ideas for "Mystery Science Theater 3000".

  • @pitchthedevil Joel had no plan with the bots. He said he stayed up all night, before taping the first show, and built them out of junk he found and a hot glue gun.

  • @TrekToons I wasn't talking about the "bot's" specifically. More like the timbre of the general show. Also, if you look at Joel's jumpsuit and hair from KTMA experiments I think there is some similarity.

  • Looks shit.

  • @LurkingUncle It so isn't though - you should watch it; this trailer isn't very good and makes the film look bad.

  • Cool :D

Did you guys knew this movie was an inspiration for George Lucas' Star Wars?

(eg: R2-D2 was inspired by those droids he's playing poker with)

Now watch this video again, knowing this :D

  • WHAT?! Not "Wally Forge"! "VALLEY FORGE"! As in "Battle of Valley Forge".

  • Remember seeing this as a kid in the 80's. Remember being very upset at 1 particular point in the story (won't spoil it)

  • The spaceship is named "Walley Forge". Many scenes were actually filmed aboard the decomissioned aircraft-carrier "Wally Forge", which lay waiting to be scrapped.

  • Movie wasn't that great

  • This "Could've" been a good movie but it sucked. The only good thing was the intro to the movie...The trailer was better thn the actual movie xD.

  • This movie has a message. Freeman Lowell decided to eliminate his colleagues who wanted to destroy the forests and the last remnant of nature. He hopes that further generations in the future will find his legacy one day and deal wiser and more respectful to nature.

In his Conservation-Pledge was written that he pledge to save and faithfully defend from waste the natural recources of his country, its soil, and minerals, its forrests, waters and wildlife. He did what had to be done.

  • This is a great movie but the trailer shows too much...

  • This is how they got the idea for Wall-E.

  • This was one of the movies that inspired Joel Hodgson to make the show Mystery Science Theater 3000.

  • amazing film with a great message, not the best trailer though, especially when it gives away the entire plot of the movie.

  • great ecological message at the time. still potent now. this and soylent green which addressed overpopulation. logan's run dealt with our obsession with youth and beauty. rollerball dealt with corporations running the world instead of companies. great sci-fi not so much for their sfx but for their messages!

  • This movie was terrible.

  • I saw this as a high school senior. Appropriate, now, for Earth Day's 40'th anniversary....

  • A very awesome movie.

  • ___~

  • Well someone in maybe a thousand years will say how stupid we were thinking the universe is pretty far and limitless. lol. You simply have to appreciate the time from which this movie originates, you can't expect them to know things from the future (today)...

  • We're yet to explore the ocean that' right here on earth. Even just Saturn? Maybe in a few hundred years, so I guess the statement is valid :)

  • I loved this movie.

  • this was a great movie... watch it alone and let your imagination guide you .

  • Even the shrill tones of Baez don't impact too adversely on this gem of a movie! The ending made me blup when I saw it as a kid..............

  • this film has such a ridiculous plot but I like that ship the interior design and the robots. I could imagine spending my life alone with them and hell if I wanted to go back to Earth

  • LOVED this film...I love the hippie theme mixed with the sci-fi....truly unique.

  • I loved this movies as it was so far ahead in space design in early science fiction movies! All most ten years ahead of Star Wars.

  • should have been called "Space Hippies"

  • when i was a kid when the lil robot died i cried me fuckin heart out 4 a week

  • george lucas based a lot in star wars from this movie )

  • I've never seen this film, but just recently, discovered that it was the inspiration for the long running TV series, Mystery Science Theater 3000.

  • be not a cancer on the earth - leave room for nature - leave room for nature

  • Love this movie!

  • The mood of the film is lost in this trailer.

  • I wonder if the director of "Moon" was inspired by this movie. The character isolation seems similar.

  • this more more than anything i thought, although he's obviously inspired by many other sci-fi flicks, not that moon isn't original in its own right.

    agree trailer is awful.

  • He has said so in interviews. Also, Outland starring Shawn Connery

  • is that a Joke?

    Sean Connery is the name

  • Really? Really? Go eat a bag of dicks you fucking douchebag. OOOH! I spelled Sean Connery's name "Shawn" instead of "Sean". Really? That fucking matters to you? Go cut off your own dick and stick it up your ass, you fucking moron.

  • Someone been watching Louis CK? Bag of dicks, classic.

  • Duncan Jones has said in several interviews explicitly that he wanted to create a movie that felt comfortable alongside Silent Running, as well as Outland, Alien and Blade Runner. He mentions Silent Running a lot as an inspiration

  • Someone watched the bonus features of Moon :) Fucking amazing film, why I'm watching this trailer, think I will order it from Lovefilm.

  • haven't seen the bonus features, but having seen Moon, this instantly made me connect the two. Still, nothing negative about it, Moon is a rare gem in the world of shallow cgi movies today.

  • The 70s was a great era for sci-fi!

  • @Villesanti sure it was...just like the weel was when it was first invented LOL

  • Fantastic movie! The final scene where the camera draws back and the ship explodes was great!

This trailer doesn't really do it justice.

  • Fuck Capitalism!

  • @bluensunshine Capatalism?

  • @LewizX90 no, I said capitalism

  • @bluensunshine ...Nevermind.

    idc anymore.

  • I love this movie! I saw it when I was young in the 1970's!

  • this movie invented the ECO WARRIOR

  • Thanks for sharing this trailer Vitrohype!

  • Great Movie with a pertinent message . . .

  • Absolutely outstanding movie. This trailer does not represent the movie. Totally worth watching. Way ahead of its time.

  • But i cant help but think of some little kid playing with supersized toys with a silly script applied...

  • GREAT movie - crap trailer.

  • This is a god-awful trailer, but Silent Running is actually a wonderful movie. The environmental message is a little dated these days, but that doesn't detract from it much.

Don't judge it from this schlocky trailer.

  • awsome movie awsome !!!

  • Should win the award for worst trailer for an excellent movie.

  • This is a top film enough said.....

  • For a remake who should play Lowel?

Brad Douif? John Malcovich? Christain Bale? Adrain Brody? Woody Harlson?

The remake should use the same script. But it should be 70MM and have a much larger budget. But the SFX should not look much different from the original. The SFX should be minimal and not overwhelm the picture.

    What do you guys think?

Should we start writting letter to Universal?

  • Al Gore!

  • @theshadow1932 I'm not sure Gore would choose those forests over a planet where it's 75 degree everywhere LOL

  • @BUDDY6414724297

    BEN STILLER !!!

With long hair and a crazy hippie gaze, Ben Stiller will look just like Freeman Lowell (Bruce Dern) from "Silent Running"... Also, it would be an interesting challenge for Stiller as he's typically playing less-serious characters.

    Cheers

(By the way, the "Silent Running" motion picture from 1972 is actually much much better than its trailer...)

  • lol typicaly shite trailer miss selling the film as advertisers do, as bill hicks said if your in advertising kill your self and stop waiting for the punch line. lol.

  • lol, down thumbs for me, as if id ever actually talk or type like that for real? I was taking the piss :o)

  • Some head-scratching comments here indeed... But I really have only one comment... For God's sake double-check your spelling, people! Sheesh! Nothing screams "crackpot rant" like misspellings all over the place.

  • wot da ya meen, i iz reeding whot you rote and i ant sure whot it iz you ar talken about, pleese explane

  • Oh my god that was hard work but did it come across good enough to be a "crackpot rant"? in your opineeeon :o)

  • Every time I see Bruce Dern I think of the movie "The Burbs"! I'd forgotten he was in this one.

  • a touching, sad film...when he crashes into one robot, and at the end when there's just one, left to tend the forest forever

  • wtf, why and how have i never herd of this movie? haha loox great

  • Because it's not flashy like BSG or Star Wars it gets overlooked often. It's a good film nonetheless. I remember seeing it on USA's Night Flight program in the late '80s.

  • Comment removed

  • Well, it did inspire George Lucas. R2D2 came from the robot in this film. Lucas even wanted the special effects director to do Star Wars, he didn't but went on for Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

  • hey this movie is awsome! its definetly worth watchin b19dav3

  • I think you are elitist, calling this generation the 'slut generation'. And its depressing what some of your views are. However having said that, i do agree on some points. But, porstituion of getting drunk isn't something to come out of 2009, nor the 1950's, but victorian or even older than that. What you want is to go back to when man played with sticks and stones. But this whole conversation is too weird. Not much you can judge on someones personality on a few comments on 'youtube;.

  • Far enough..but I won't accept the 'fact' that things where always as bad as they are now, that's the easy option for people who just don't care & actually like the Godless, moraless World we now have. Have you been out lately? Have you seen the way my Slut Generation go on, their shallow interests & misplaced egos? That is now the majority. I'm the minority, I'm far from perfect but at least I have a soul, love nature & hate materialism...elitist no, weird to many but honest to afew. Take care.

  • robhere, I won't get into everything you and the other person are discussing but I have to say you are very intelligent and I agree with most everything you stated. Don't worry, I have a feeling things will eventually turn around and people will realize how thy're ruining the world, their lives and each other someday.

  • Er, where's the comments about the film?

Is this any good to watch now?

I'm building myself up for Moon, which opens in theatres on Friday!!!

  • Yes its a good movie. Watch it

  • Nice message by the way kid, I'm surprised you got it passed your mothers parental supervision. Seriously, the world is pretty fun out of your parents' basement, I assure you.

Come on over, I'll buy you a drink. The favorite pastime of my slut generation, who laughs at you while you talk shit about us behind your PC. LoL You're a fossil, you'll turn to dust before your words come close to changing this world.

  • you people leave some of the weirdest comments... talking about rape? what lol

  • GO DEWY AND HUEY!!

''take care of the forest, Dewy'' BOOM

  • woo nice film , pity about the comments, sorry to say but when the raping and burning of villages where happening i am sure they where worried about the state of there society or when the roman empire where raping small boys , they where worried about the morals of there daughters or ... we do what we do and if the world was different maby we would be but we are the product of our history . 10 times worse lol . still a very good film :)

  • Face-palmed at seeing the comments.

Great movie, great actors and a nice concept! I loved it.

    No remake, please.

  • Bruce Dern-Great actor!

  • & my last rant lol..but seriously, I believe the world needs to be restarted, my Slut generation DO NOT deserve this beautiful plant or it's animals..they don't even notice it. I'll say again, my generation are all about getting drunk, fxxxing ( not love ) and having as much money as possible. That's it. You think the world is gonna be any better in 10, even 5 years? Look at even the 'music' we have now, it's just shit sounding porn. I wish mother nature would fight back for the way we treat her.

  • Maybe that's what the evolving diseases are all about......

  • I doubt it will make much difference, my Slut generation don't even fear AIDs, which can be pretty much kept under control anyway. Girls are taking the pill like sweets now 'cause fuxxing is now as common as kissing used to be. The Slut generation polute their bodies like this once beautiful planet has been poluted..it's all a vicious cycle. Silent Running's depiction may not happen but this generation are setting up even greater moral and environmental pitfalls, you can see it everywhere.

  • Which generation is that? I'm a baby boomer (barely: I'm 50, Boom/GenX cusp), and I feel the same way about people my age.

I don't mind 'em polluting their bodies and screwing, however. It's the lack of empathy and other interests that annoy me.

  • It's that sort of behaviour that causes lack of empathy, when the wild nights turn into ugly morning afters. What's caused our ill feeling or at least, indifference to fellow beings, is pride at what's wrong with us and a steadfast determination to avoid seeing how bad this is; determination to accept and glorify all that's evil in us.

  • I believe your generation are the same so why do you think my generation and alot younger are now behaving 10 times as worse? We all know what a sorry state morally 'civilised' society is in, the 'me, get drunk, let's fuxx' mentality is not only the norm, it's 'cool'. The lack of empathy for each other comes from this but it has now given way for a lack of empathy for anything, including the planet. I'm also extremely annoyed at the tolal lack of anything soulful from my slut generation.

  • Comment removed

  • It hurts God to see this. As each generation gets worse, more and more chaos results. The arrogance in the crew of Silent Running epitomises this-these are some of the types of guys seducing our daughters.

I hope and pray it's the polluted people who suffer and not the planet, for the sake of a distant future generation that'll appreciate nature and look after her.

  • Yes, each generation is getting worse, that is a fact. I'm not overly religious but it is now trendy of my generation not only to believe there is no God, but to make fun of religion as well. God for me is everywhere in nature, so by my generation polluting there bodies, minds and the countryside they are basically saying 'fuxx you' to the few people left who care. That is why my generation should be offically known as the 'Slut Generation'. They deserve no respect.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm not being smart with you either by saying this ( everything you said is right ) but as for 'these are some of the types of guys seducing our daughters'..take it from someone who knows this generation, 'Daughters' do not need to be seduced nowadays, they are that crazy and slutty on alcohol they have no respect for themselves let alone each other or the planet. It's even worse then portrayed on 'porn' T.V. now. Sad but that is how low everything has sunk.

  • I think we're nearing the end, where the pressures to go with the crowd are so great. You don't get accepted if you're modest; though many English women are quite reserved. Perhaps it's only when they're drunk.

We're getting sicker and bugs and viruses are getting stronger...

  • I hope your right. It is true, if your modest, quiet or more importantly genuine, you're treated with suspicion, abit like Dern in the movie. People want shallow BS now, dame have they got it! As for English women being reserved, I wish you where right on that, nice girls don't exist anymore, drink and materialism killed that off in the 90's for good. If they only knew they where so much more likable when they were sober and just being themselves. The world needs to be restarted. Sad but true.

  • You two really, REALLY need to get laid. No offense. You will feel a lot better, I assure you.

  • I cryed for the little robot at the end 'cause I don't think a human would ever do what it did ( I know it was programmed! ) but you see my point. Even the songs are by a lady who can sing, Joan Baez. If this is remade, you'll have a no talent, corrupt slut like spears or rihanna who couldn't give a fuck about anything ( only money and sex ) on the soundtrack! Believe me, my generation wouldn't get or care about the msg in this movie, they have the materialistic, porno world they want now. Sad.

  • Made for 1 million and the effects and sets look stunning..especially when compared to today's cheap looking CGI. More importantly this is a deeply touching movie, it shows most of the human race ( the 3 guys ) for what it is, uncaring about nature & animals and totally driven by materialism. Abit like my generation, well educated but completely stupid, ignorant and materialistic, only interested in shallow 'bling' culture and never noticing the simple beauty in nature...

  • One of the very best sci-fi films of all time! Better then STAR WARS!

  • @ghostmanlostsoul Star Wars is not sci-fi it's fantasy like Lord of the Rings

  • @sondano How is Star Wars NOT sci-fi?

  • @SavageGenius135 Star Wars is not sci-fi because it doesn't use science as a central theme. Like exploring the galaxy or time travel. The story of Star Wars could have, just as easily, taken place here on Earth. I small band of rebels taking on an evil empire is not relegated to intergalactic space. It's more of a fantasy, like a fairy tale.

  • @ghostmanlostsoul Dune is better than Star Wars, this was conceptually great.

  • When I was a kid, the ending broke my heart. One robot was injured, the other was left alone, watering the flowers.

Wow, this trailer needs to be rewritten with Percy Rodrigues (Jaws) as the voice!

  • NO DON't REMAKE IT

I saw it in Leeds yesterday

    Mark Kermode hosted it

  • Hollywood will murder it ;,(

  • kermode's all time favorite sci-fi movie?

  • i would love a remake

  • Yes so would i.

but ,the day the earth stood still is still fresh in my mind and they ruined that.

  • I love this film. It's one of my all-time favorites, but... my God, who wrote this trailer?! "Meet the almost-human drones, amazing companions on a journey beyond the stars." Uh, no, it was a journey beyond the orbit of Saturn, doofus!

And the spoilers! If you've seen the film, you know what I'm talking about.

They'd have been way ahead just showing us a montage set to Baez's vocals, and left it at that. Somebody shoot that narrator, please!

Silent Running isn't cheesy, but this trailer is.

  • The trailer..yes what were they thinking. But like the way the title comes out at you near the end.

  • omg i love youtube i just saw a coment on an oter phost and the name silent running was there and just had to lock it up omg i love this old sifi vids its awsome i ghot when to worlds colaid... but you know the old movis just wanishes in tho the thime and been forgoten. im dowloding this movie know i hope is it as awsome aqs i think it is (= if some one has eny other sujestions plees tell mee (= xD

  • For anyone who doesn't already know: Silent Running was the inspiration for the concept of Mystery Science Theatre 3000! :D

  • Didnt know that, thanks for the info.

  • I loved this movie since I was a little kid! Thanks for sharing the clip!

  • I loved this movie when I was a little kid. I saw it a several times back in the 80's. It's very sad..I remember feeling emotional..won't spoil it.

  • yeah..that song at the end seems rather sad.

  • Love that song.

  • Are they going to remake this movie? If they do they should shot it in 70mm.

  • If they do they should burn in hell...

  • At first I thought this came out in the 80's, and was thinking, "Wow, those effects are laughable for that time." Then I saw when it was made..1971. Those effects are actually SPECTACULAR for 1971. Better than 2001, and nearly on the grade of the first Star Wars movie.

  • You must be kidding. 2001's effects are far better than that.

  • Thoughtful sci-fi film. Dated, but still can relate to the issues and enviromental problems we are now facing. Lowell's desperate actions sums up how badly we will go in saving something so precious to protect and keep. Sad ending though. A lesson to be learned here!

  • One of my favorite movies of all time. (And Im not really a movie person).

  • This movie is more relevant today than ever before. Dern is awesome then as now, and Baez, although shrilly is awesome, and beautiful. And - Duey - he deserves an oscar for his performance! Great sci-fi!

  • For several years i keep reading articles that this movie was supposed to get a updated version remake. Where is it?

  • Hi.

this film isnt a remake of any thing or an update. Its unique.

    Steve

  • The money men didn't want his one made in the first place. So I doubt they'll let a sequal or remake be made of this story.
