  • My only complaint is that, if anything, Nels is *not* as "free" as Coltrane was. You can kind of tell when he settles into a certain mode or riff and kind of noodles on it for a bit, albeit for only a few seconds--that's still a few seconds more than Coltrane did. And so it lacks the almost impossibly chaotic, continuous insanity (but still somehow perversely lyrical) of Coltrane.

That being said, 1:26 is brutal as fuck and sounds more like the minimalist mathcore band Orthrelm than anything.

  • I honestly think John would thoroughly enjoy this. Anyone who is hating on this clearly has no idea what kind of person John Coltrane was and what he believed in. Saying that this is a fucking joke really just makes you look completely ignorant and foolish.

  • I really have to say that this doesn't do for me what the actual coltrane record does. I'm not say there is anything wrong with this. I just really am moved by the record. I suppose part of it could be that coltrane is so iconic that when I think of him playing the music I'm listening to, it does something more for me. Or it could be that Coltrane is absolutely amazing and no one can pull this off the way he did.

  • Brilliant!

  • Come see Tim Berne/Nels Cline/Jim Black on 10/3 at the Angel City Jazz Festival on 10/3 at the Ford Amphitheater in LA.

  • Cosmic !

  • This is a fucking joke and a disgrace to Coltrane. These guys are posers.

  • Saw the same "show" at the Empty Bottle in Chicago with all of 10-20 people there. Still rates as one of the top 3 shows i've EVER seen. Mindblowing. Can't believe this is here. Thanks for posting!

  • Love Coltrane; love Cline. Thanks for posting this.

  • well it does it for me

  • feedback and effects are elements that to an open minded guitarist are no less important than breathing to a horn player. so i can't discount this version in any way. nels rocks your face off!!!!

  • coltrane could genuinely play changes so his free stuff is convincing...

  • Nels Cline comes close to capturing Coltranes relentless "blowing" on intersteller space. Of course Cline is using effects and feedback, keep in mind Coltrane actually had to blow into the Saxophone. Pretty good, one of the better jazz or free jazz guitar improvisers out there.

  • fate spazio all'avanguardia

  • I dig it the most!

  • Saw this in LA a couple times. Mind Blowing!!!

  • Thank you for posting this.

If you don't see any of the passion og Coltrane in this OR any of the love and respect that Nels and Gregg have for this piece- you might should reevaluate your involvement in the music to begin with.

Academia and art never have a good marriage.

  • Nels Cline is one of the top guitar players out there. It is not supposed to sound like a john coltrane record; 2 white boys. Use your fucking head. Also, you can't call Nels Cline a Poser, Dick Weed. You aren't fit to carry his guitar case. Watch, take notes & learn................

  • Well, that wasn't clear. The record they produced of this is one of my favorite instances of NC's playing - also led me to Greg Bendian's other records which are fantastic. I like Nels' playing in Wilco too, but this stuff knocked me right over. Thanks Nels, thanks Gregg!

  • Not I.

  • Hmm...no

  • nor I

  • Nor I.

  • i love how no matter how nicely you express dissent on a video's comments you get the thumbs down. i fucking said I worship the guy but didnt find this appealing. jesus you people are tight asses

  • They disagree with your statement (as do I). Don't like it? Get off the internet.

  • Ahahahahaha! "Get off the internet". And yes, this is very ripe. I've been wanting to pick up Interstellar Space for ages but can never seem to find a copy. Time to order, digest, and then check out the record these guys made in tribute.

  • @xeroxbarber

    I have the Quadrophonic LP

  • Not at all.

  • mmhhh no.

  • its nice but obviously not close to tranes version, i think that when you listen to interstellar space you can actually listen and understand the things trane is doing but i didn't quite get the same feeling from this anyway keep it up guys it's still amazing

  • The both of them are unbelievably good! The Interstellar Space Revisited disc is incredible.

Much respect to Nels & Gregg

    Thanks for posting this

  • this album is nuts

  • How's that exactly?

  • It's not a cover, it's a reinterpretation. Covering Coltrane would be pointless, and completely idiotic. This is looking at Interstellar Space from a different perspective, not Trane's. It can't be viewed in the light you have placed it, since, no, Nels is NOT playing the right transcription.

  • If he is looking at it from a different perspective, then what elements of the piece are being taken in to consideration here? As far as I am concerned Nels Cline is playing great music here, yet I can't see why there is the need to attach the Coltrane legacy to it.

  • Well, he's covering the piece "Leo" from the John Coltrane record "Interstellar Space." If you'd listened to the record, say, 700 times, you'd recognize this piece of music. He plays the theme, returns to riffs, and basically solos in the style of Interstellar Space. It's not just shredding. There's a weird logic to it. I never had any trouble, since I don't play or study musical composition...I just know there's a logic to it I recognize.

  • First, this "guy" is Nels Cline, one of the greatest guitar players of all time.

Second, Rashied Ali not only approved these two making this record, but was quoted as "loving" it.

  • @fidelitysalesman Word

And one of the best living guitarplayers today

  • Much respect.

  • HOLY CROW!!!!

  • Brutal, and beautiful. So glad to be able to see this on my computer. Youtube suddenly makes sense. Thanx to the poster...

  • Wow. Awesome.

  • ths is just AMAZING. i'm speachless. surely, nobody will ever emulate what John and Rashied did that time, but Nels & Gregg didn't cut a poor figure - not at all.

i'm AMAZED. Thaks to the one who posted this.

  • This is interesting stuff, I admire Cline and Bendian for even approaching this material. It's not a cover of Coltrane's music, however it is is definitely in the spirit of the orininal music.
