I discovered this recording in form of an old cassette I bought from St. Vinny's for about 60 cents. But then my walkman stopped playing tapes, so I'm very glad indeed that it's uploaded on youtube now. :)
@GiantPetRat I'm sure that was not this particular recording. Ms Chung recorded Bartok No.2 twice; first with Solti in 1976, and the second with Rattle in 1994 (this version won Gramophone award). I'd guess your cassette tape was either of the two unless it had been from some pirate source.
Chung needs to be admired as much as any of the great violinists; this is great playing, musical, and stylish, of one of the great violin concertos. What an opening!
premiered in Amsterdam on march 23, 1939 by request of his friend violinist Zoltán Székely and composed by hungarian author Bela Bartók, it's a work of virtuosistic writing
Chung's is definitely one of the best. here's the thing though, the Bartok 2 is horrendously difficult technically. The first thing you have to conquer are the gargantuan technical hurdles. And that's not something that many have been able to do. The only performances/recordings of it, other than Chung's, that have satisfied me, have been those of the 18 year old Midori. Midori's are spectacular, like she doesn't even notice the difficulties. I can't say the same for Menuhin's or Zukerman's!
