Then when the monk instructor says you're ready or when you show a form to the head monk and he approves, you are promoted to the Advanced class. The Advanced class is the cream of the crop in which you can use any weapon from the Shaolin temple's wide arsenal and more advanced flips and forms that require acrobatic skill and agility.

There are 3 levels, Basic, Intermediate and Advanced. In the Basic level, you learn obviously the basics-punching, kicking, forms, and the only weapon you can get is staff. Then after you pass a test held twice anually, you go to the Intermediate. In the Intermediate, you can now use daos(broad swords) and learn more complicated forms and kicks along with flips and more advanced stuff.

They aren't monks. Probably just a mislabelling on dephunct's part. The only two real monks are Heng Zheng and Heng Shan, easy to distinguish as they're the only two bald asians. The rest are students who train at the temple and made it to the performance level where they are authorized to use more advanced weapons.

yep, performances are by 2 shifus and mostly students. we are announced as students of shaolin so we do learn the art, but no, except for 2, we are technically not monks, just performers of shaolin kung fu.

Hi all, I want to clarify things.

My son is a student of the temple.

1. Performances are by Sifus & Students of Queens NY Shaolin Temple.

2. Weapons are performance grade not weapons grade. But it's not fake. The weapons are capable of inflicting injury. I've seen it.
