It impossible to play bass and melody simultaneously (look at Kraftwerk, then need four men to do it, it is the best prove of that impossibility ;))

Unfortunatly I have no idea what documentaries you have seen so it's very diffcult to say what changes had been made, cause a lot of improvements have been made since the time.
