@CanStripey yeah thats for sure i live in NB and my step dad worked for milltown trucking in 2010 till 2011 drivin an 07 pete and we had a -40 night truck was down the road maybe a hundred feet or so cause we needed the driveway space for a party he forgot to bring it up after and it ended up sitting there all night and the cold roasted the batteries had to plug it in for a day and a half after getting new batteries befor shed even think about starting
Don't worry. I have lots of experience starting diesel engines in cold temps and I'm not against using either if used properly.
As far as reving a cold engine goes, it dosn't need to be a high rev. So if you don't mind accelerating the wear on your piston rings, cylinder walls, bearings and end up doing costly overhauls sooner, then by all means, go ahead and rev your cold engine, I really don't care.
I didnt see a high rev. I saw a run up to about 1000 a couple times. A cummins doesnt make real good oil pressure at low idle. one thousand or 12 hundred is a good warm up speed once you get oil pressure. But an hour on a block heater would have made everybody's day easier
@BornRandy62 Which Cummins are you referring to? All of the old NTC engines I've ran would peg the oil pressure gauge when cold. N-14's the same way. The ISX's run much lower pressure than the others, but then they were designed that way too. This guy could obviously use a FASS fuel system on this truck, then he wouldn't have had to crank so long before he got enough fuel pressure for the injectors to do their job either
@blueskiesbob Diesels arent like gas motors, you have to give them a lil gas and nudge to get to them to idle and run good, especially these older cummins, so dont get all high and mighty lol
@Colleen15ful Ether is bad for the engine because it often ignites too soon. It sometimes lights up when the piston is still on the way up to compress the air-fuel mixture und so it bangs the piston down in the wrong way. That's also bad for the piston-rods and the crankshaft.
Why they make it? Because it's supposed to be used in an emergency for example when you really have to start the engine. So you better shoud stop talking if you have no idea about what you talking.
@Alro451 Your right it is bad for it, Im a cummins mechanic, and seen piston rings, and lands get taken out because of either . In the real world your gonna do it from time to time, but their are potential consequences, expensive consequences . If you spray to much you might fuck it up, even if you have no preheater . Your better of to fill the filter with diesel 911, and put a bottle of 911 in the tank .
@Alro451 as long as the engine doesnt have a preheater it help them start faster and makes it easier on a number of components, they have upper cylinder lube in them so its not like it isnt getting lubeb, and diesel is a lubricant as well. If not used in excess i may add! too much, yes it can be hard on it. just a quick squirt in the filter will do.
My only experience with a small cam was a re-built, over fueled 270 that my former boss stuck in an old, rusty, '86 Freightliner FL that he won in a card game.
It never failed to start, but it also never failed to fog out the entire neighborhood, regardless of outside temp.
The truck looked like hell, but I found out why anyone who ever drove it, never wanted to give it up. It had a single leaf spring under the back of the cab, and to date, is the smoothest riding truck I ever drove.
Now that's a big truck haha

Don't worry. I have lots of experience starting diesel engines in cold temps and I'm not against using either if used properly.
As far as reving a cold engine goes, it dosn't need to be a high rev. So if you don't mind accelerating the wear on your piston rings, cylinder walls, bearings and end up doing costly overhauls sooner, then by all means, go ahead and rev your cold engine, I really don't care.

I didnt see a high rev. I saw a run up to about 1000 a couple times. A cummins doesnt make real good oil pressure at low idle. one thousand or 12 hundred is a good warm up speed once you get oil pressure. But an hour on a block heater would have made everybody's day easier

@BornRandy62 Which Cummins are you referring to? All of the old NTC engines I've ran would peg the oil pressure gauge when cold. N-14's the same way. The ISX's run much lower pressure than the others, but then they were designed that way too. This guy could obviously use a FASS fuel system on this truck, then he wouldn't have had to crank so long before he got enough fuel pressure for the injectors to do their job either

@Colleen15ful Ether is bad for the engine because it often ignites too soon. It sometimes lights up when the piston is still on the way up to compress the air-fuel mixture und so it bangs the piston down in the wrong way. That's also bad for the piston-rods and the crankshaft.
Why they make it? Because it's supposed to be used in an emergency for example when you really have to start the engine. So you better shoud stop talking if you have no idea about what you talking.

@Alro451 Your right it is bad for it, Im a cummins mechanic, and seen piston rings, and lands get taken out because of either . In the real world your gonna do it from time to time, but their are potential consequences, expensive consequences . If you spray to much you might fuck it up, even if you have no preheater . Your better of to fill the filter with diesel 911, and put a bottle of 911 in the tank .

@Alro451 as long as the engine doesnt have a preheater it help them start faster and makes it easier on a number of components, they have upper cylinder lube in them so its not like it isnt getting lubeb, and diesel is a lubricant as well. If not used in excess i may add! too much, yes it can be hard on it. just a quick squirt in the filter will do.

My only experience with a small cam was a re-built, over fueled 270 that my former boss stuck in an old, rusty, '86 Freightliner FL that he won in a card game.
It never failed to start, but it also never failed to fog out the entire neighborhood, regardless of outside temp.
The truck looked like hell, but I found out why anyone who ever drove it, never wanted to give it up. It had a single leaf spring under the back of the cab, and to date, is the smoothest riding truck I ever drove.
