I play drums and yet I am learning bass as well because it is SO important. A band with only a guitar sounds like that squeaky fucking dog next door that you wanna kick to the moon. The bass grabs the soul of the percussive element the drums lay down and bridges it to the melody of the guitar(s). The bass line IS(true in any song that matters!)ths shit.

Yeah, Drums lay down your foundation for any song. Drums, then guitar (just because im a guitarist lololz). Bass is cool and all, but idk.

i think drums are good to have but there are not needed unless ur krankin up the distortion like u have drums. But if your doin it acoustic or clean, its not the most important. But otherwise, Drums 1 Guitar 2 bass 3 vocals 4 fife 5

So you are saying that the bass is completely unnecceseraly? I'm playing guitar, however when me and my friends play, we really need the bass. It contributes with a specific tune, that I think is helpful for the song's rythm. Obviously one of the members in your 4-player band is a bass player, you are now saying that you don't need him?

umm the bass guitar is the least intrument you need in the band- you need everything else and then the bass - bass is the last thing u need and btw....we had a bassist before but now my 4 piece band is a drummer-2guitarist and a singer

okay...saying you dont need a bass player is like saying you dont need any back bone to your music. if you play a song with no bass it has a weak sound and kinda makes it sound pathetic. bass is ment to keep the rythem and give the song its power. i play drums, i sing, i play guitar, and i play bass. nothing in a band is useless...unless it's pointless lyrics. if you took away the bass from any good band it would effect it big time. metallica. slipknot. ozzy. black sabbeth. zeplain. anything!

well it depends on what kinda music u play. like if u play jazzy stuff its a given. but if its like melodic death metal where u use floor drums alot i think u could get by without one

they are all pretty much evenly important.

Without drums, it is harder to figure out the rythm.

Without guitars, it is harder to figure out the mood.

Without bass, it sounds too plain.

Without vocal, well.. that's the only thing I'd mainly discard.

of course there are bands that are just so good at what they do, so they won't need other instruments. Just guitar, for example, is enough for them to make the music sound full and beautiful.
