  • The performance is beautiful and captivating.....recorded sooooo many years ago...with simple recording capabilities.....NO studio editing....just a perfect sounding performance...imagine what he would sound like with today's technology!!

  • I love this man. His voice is so amazing.

  • The first time he went into pianissimo, I thought something'd gone wrong with the video…when he did it again, I realised it was his amazing control of dynamics.

  • The recording noise adds so much intensity to this performance. Very unsettling.

  • ...

    perfect...

  • what year was this? Excellent song...i love lieder! <3

  • Ein Traum, Welche Leidenschaft. Eine unübertroffene Größe im klassischen Gesang

  • Feliz invierno a todo el hemisferio sur! (happy summer to de north (: )

  • BRAVOOOOOOOOOOOO! HE HAS A MAGNIFICENT Interpretation! GREAT GAME IN THE LIGHT AND DARK VOCAL TONE. SCHUBERT Buying a BEAUTIFUL MELODY FOR PIANO. THE DIE IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL Winterreise. Many thanks for your post.

  • I love Fischer-Dieskau and have had his winterreise on vinal in the early 60s. Wore it out. CD replacement not as good. Saw Prey/Winterreise live at Emory University. What a treat. I cannot chose between the two.

I agree that the sound here lacks a lot Buy the CD :You will not regret it.

  • @jhutch1463 Have you tried the digital version from ITunes? I love mine...

  • can you fix the sound?

  • Dieskau is great.......... like Hotter.

  • How I wish I'd been able to see this performance - or any of DFD's performances. Born too late but not too late to wish the maestro a happy 85th birthday.

  • poor audio... :(

    what a great singer

  • year?

  • 1966?

  • No one sings Schubert like Fischer-Dieskau. He's amazing. Sorry, too tired and lazy to respond in German ;)

  • @timek21v

have you ever listened to Thomas Quasthoff ? he is a genious too i would even prefer him ;) try it :)

    greets

  • Who is the pianist? Sounds and looks like Gerald.

  • I'm pretty sure it's Jörg Demus. They made a sound recording of Winterreise together in the same year...

  • Yes, it is... the Japanese subtitle says so :-)

  • Comment removed

  • The Japanese telop (0:11) says he is Jörg Demus.

  • Γαμάει ο Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau!

  • very moving version . powerful pianissimi ; : )

  • What happened to Lindenbaum has it been taken off you tube?

  • of course ;)

  • Thank you McThomson.

Clearly I should closing my eyes when I listen, but that is what I often do in the presence of a great artist.

  • When I saw the 1925 I said WAIT! He looks young but not that young!

Obviously that's the year of his birth......

But he is very young here, no?

A great strophic song sung by the mastersinger.,

  • yes. at 0:20 you see in the left corner above the number: 1966. He's born in 1925. so he must this piece be singing in the age of 30/31.

  • sin palabras, impresionante ;)

  • Mosen Saft

  • INCREDIBLE!!! Everything I hope to be able to do one day..... No one can touch Dieskau!

  • is anyone on the lookout for sheets to the song? it would be greatly appreciated..

    =]

  • in peters edition you can get all the leider in one volume :)

  • that's what im talking about..!

  • Hey, good to see you around!

Fsicher Dieskau is one of the greatest baritones ever!!!

  • It is just... so beautiful. So simple and so elegant. Thank you!

  • suiran wo shi ji shang xue guo yidian Hanyu.

  • This here is beautiful singing and proper vocal technique, ladies and gentleman.

Quastoff is only famous b/c he is a midget singing opera. TV is like a circus where everybody wants to see these freaks of nature.

DFD on the other hand, is a real singer and his fame is only due to his voice not to his looks.

  • I completely agree with you, please understand that, but I also think that Quasthoff has a fantastic voice. The only thing I dislike about Quasthoff is his lack of technique for stylistic reasons... otherwise I'd say judging vocal ability only, he is well deserving of his fame.

  • ok, but you have to accept that great part of his fame came because he is a midget singing opera. Everybody wants to look... like rubberneckers!

But even worse, people make him an heroe and think that his art is perfect. As if life had compensated his deformity with a perfect voice and that's not the case. People think the same of Bocelli, who is another circus.

Again, if Quastoff was not a midget, nobody would even turn to see him.

  • Quasthoff is a great singer, and nothing else. Maybe he's also famous because of his handicap, but only in the eyes of those of you who see his handicap. "Listen, he can sing, although he is a midget..." bullshit, faschism, and pseudo-covered intolerance!

He is a great singer!!! His voice has nothing to do with his body, learn to accept this a fact. Fischer-Diskau is also a great singer, although his mother did not use THALIDOMID/CONTERGAN

  • Totally disagree. Qualsthoff has a great, great voice and I started loving it just from audio, before I ever saw him. His Gute Nacht is amazing. Nothing to do with his disability.

  • Quasthoff doesn't sing bad, although, that's right, there's some effects involved with the media. If a comparison is needed here, I 100 percent prefer FD, of whom the voice quality is what Quasthoff stays too far behind to catch up.

  • Finally! Someone with ears!!

  • you don't seem to know what you are talking about.

  • DFD's rendition of this song is better that Quasthoff's. This is not because Quasthoff is bad, he is a great singer. DFD is simply the best, no other baritones come close to him in terms of sheer technique and beauty.

  • i think hotter is best for winterreise

  • D F-D is synonymous with exceptional & unique artistry, as perfect as it is humanly possible to be.

  • wie schön!!!!

  • !Excelente¡

    Alberto

  • It's genius!!!

  • Listen to Thomas Quasthoff singing this Lied here at YouTube, it's fantastic.

  • "The song sings him" that's it! How can such prowess be made to look effortless? To be so gifted! As someone wrote of him, paraphrasing Dryden: "Here is God's plenty"

  • Pity about the poor sound quality but good to hear this song. DFD took it upon himself to record all of Schubert's lieder; a noble effort from a great singer.

  • Can't take my eyes off this performance. He doesn't sing this song, the song sings him! Every change in his energy, his face, his manner comes right out of what's going on in the song. NO ONE sings Lieder this well.

  • I would love to; but could anyone be kind enough post Prey, Krause or Talvela?

  • Anyone daring comparing this with Quasthoff,Prey,Krause or Talvela?

It is pure but not heartbreaking.

  • Very beautiful....

  • Wonderful, wonderful...

Please, the name of the pianist...

  • He must be Gerald Moore.

  • Sorry, I meant Joerg Demus.

Listen this Lied also by Hans Hotter and Gerald Moore (piano).

  • gosh, listening to him is ever so wonderful! watching him singing almost moves me to tears

  • Dieskau was born in 1925! the date at the opening is wrong! Very wrong!!!

  • I do think it's his birth year, yes? Which is why there's nothing after the tilde, since well, he's still alive. Which explains the 1966 later...

  • Yeah, sorry 'bout that. I must have been on crack.

  • The date says the day of the song realitation.

    1966.

  • There is no doubt Fisher Dieskau was one of the greatest lieder singers of all times. However I am going to evoke another german lieger singer who I find much more pleasant to listen "Hermann Prey". Particularly with Schubert´s Winterreise Prey shows what a fantastic lieder singer he was.

  • I love Prey's artistry, and earlier today I was listening to the famous recording of Hans Hotter. But I've recently discovered Christian Gerhaher (who just performed Die Schöne Müllerin at Weill Hall last week) and I think he belongs in this elite list as well.

  • To me he ever remains the reference for the Winterreise!

  • He's certainly the best baritone whom I've heard sing!

  • What a wonderful duet...no words for it

  • @ fitzalle

bravo ~ großartig, außerordentlich, beispielhaft, ausgezeichnet...

  • danke

  • how do you say bravo in germany?

  • Bravo!

  • Absolutely the finest

  • Beyond just his magnificent singing, it's his physical, palpable reactions to the piano, when he's not singing, that make him simply the finest lieder singer I've ever seen or heard. Just look at 4:09, Schubert's epochal switch to C major, the way it seems to rejuvenate Fischer-Dieskau's entire physicality. He embodies this music, in every sense.

Merci Dietrich!

  • J'aime DFD!

  • C'est véritablement sublime. Thank you so much for posting it, this is incredible, such an interpretation, such a voice, such a life in it... Thank you so much

  • astrophel1 where did you find this fragment?

  • Thank you so much for this video!!

  • love it!

  • At last, some more Fischer Dieskau clips on YouTube! :D Gotta love him!

  • i've heard Fischer-Dieskau's Winterrreise rendition in different cds. thanks for the post. it's my first time to see him perform my most favorite song cycle.

  • stevevandien> Sure Accompanist is Jorg Demus. in 1966 Tokyo.

  • Any chance you know where to get a video of the whole performance?

  • I live in Japan, so I was watching this performance in the past.(Live)

  • Mozartiikodesu -- do you mean that you were at the original performance?! Or have you at least seen more than just this song?

  • Abou your question.. which heard it except this performance in 1966 Japan?

  • Oh, duh -- don't know why I said "clearly Japan," as though I'm an expert on Asian calligraphy -- open mouth, insert size 12 foot:) --

  • A musical titan, Fischer-Dieskau. Very, very beautiful music.

  • From the subtitles, it's clear this was in Japan -- but when? I'm guessing during the 1950s, but not sure -- and who is the accompanist? Jorg Demus?

  • I believe that it is Demus based on the year (it says 1966 at some point, which is when they recorded the cycle.) The broadcast was taped of a Japanese or Korean television station; I can't guarantee that the performance itself was in one of those countries. I'd love to find out how to get hold of a video-recording of the entire recital - if this is out there, the rest must be too, no?

  • Sure be nice to get the rest. At his best, DFD was untouchable in lieder and some other song genres as well. He's in lovely voice here --

  • The texts are Japanese. It says that the pianist is Demus. It says that in 1966 DFD made a second visit to Japan and sung the cycle in front of the Japanese audience for the first time, so I guess this was filmed during the visit.
