I don't think either the fans or the Williams sisters came out well in this one. Venus shouldn't have waited until 4 minutes before the damned match to default. I don't think most of the crowd was motivated by race, but rather by frustration. That being said, the fans shouldn't have taken it out on Serena the next day. And the Williams sisters' continuing boycott of the whole event just doesn't make sense.

From watching the video you can't hear the racial slurs , but news reports of people who were on the scene could tell you what the people said as they went down the steps. It is not the first time or only time they were subjected to racial slur at an event.

Venus was scheduled to play Serena in the semifinals. 15 minutes before the match, Venus announced she would pull out due to tendinitis. All of the fans were already there and had already forked over money (not cheap for semis) to see the match. That really pissed people off, especially because many believe that the injury wasn't genuine and that it was just the Williams camp picking Serena to move on. This was Indian Wells, California. Maybe some racists in the crowd, but not the majority.
It is so interesting that some people are denying this wasn't racial when it is so obvious it was. Serena was a nineteen year old girl at the time and the white country club crowd supported her European opponent Kim Clijsters. Serena was booed every single shot she hit. Somehow Serena blocked out the racist all white crowd and found a way to win the match that's what I find to be amazing.
It's just sad that this occured in California of all places!!! I'm Glad Venus and Serena no longer play there. Others should have boycotted the tournament also.

Serena is on TOP now! She has surpassed her sisters play advice. Notice how she plays base-line at first, to lull her opponent - then steps into mid-court to BASH cross-courts at them? I have never seen one recover from that treatment. They all get tuckered out! You racist pigs should go somewhere else - hell might be an appropriate choice? Fixated non-thinkers are always welcome there I've heard!

I agree they do make up reasons for their losses, but that's how they were raised to think it's their mentality. But I definitely don't think that they are a disgrace to Tennis in fact their the EXACT opposite, name any other player that has brought as much as them in the 20th century.!!!???

As usual when it comes to judging a black person you always see the negative.How do you know that they are not genuinely injured. Have you ever played top level tennis i doubt it .Players get injured reguarly and sometimes play through the pain ,and sometimes not . That is their perogative.

Question, Indian Wells starts this week. And if I'm looking at the rankings correctly, Serena is about 400 points ahead of Safina. Safina only has 90 points to defend and Indian Wells is worth 1000 points. Yet, I haven't heard any talk of Serena's ranking being in danger. Am I reading this wrong or is her ranking in danger?

I have no idea what happened with the Williams sisters and tournament officials following this, and the crowd was no doubt out of line, but a crowd is never made up of the same ppl at every tournament. Whether or not racial slurs were used you shouldn't let one crowd on one day keep you from participating. In a way you're letting the ppl who did boo win.

well, that's what I've been asking--what was the crowd yelling? Most of the crowd were booing and that's all you can hear in that video. Ans I don't have any problem with the booing, because other players get booed. Somebody posted that video to show what they went through, but I can't hear any racial slurs, so how is somebody supposed to know (by watching that video) ? If the Williams say there were racial slurs, then I believe them, because I'm a fan of the whole family.

From watching the video you can't hear the racial slurs , but news reports of people who were on the scene could tell you what the people said as they went down the steps. It is not the first time or only time they were subjected to racial slur at an event.

OK, It really matters very little how many in the crowd were racially motivated. What angers me is that people try to deny that ANY of the crowd were motivated by racism. How naive can one be? What can't be denied is that a much of the crowd tried to bully teenage american player - tried to break her. And if the majority thought it went to far and wanted to drown them out, they could have, but didn't. That's the most damning thing.

Venus was scheduled to play Serena in the semifinals. 15 minutes before the match, Venus announced she would pull out due to tendinitis. All of the fans were already there and had already forked over money (not cheap for semis) to see the match. That really pissed people off, especially because many believe that the injury wasn't genuine and that it was just the Williams camp picking Serena to move on. This was Indian Wells, California. Maybe some racists in the crowd, but not the majority.

It is so interesting that some people are denying this wasn't racial when it is so obvious it was. Serena was a nineteen year old girl at the time and the white country club crowd supported her European opponent Kim Clijsters. Serena was booed every single shot she hit. Somehow Serena blocked out the racist all white crowd and found a way to win the match that's what I find to be amazing.

Believe it or not people, there were people in IW that actually SUPPORTED the Williams. And to keep calling the CROWD racist is unfair. I'm sure race played a factor for some, but the biggest racist I'm seeing right now is Richard Williams. I was there and I applauded the Williams sisters.
To be honest, I probably would've booed Richard for all the hateful comments he spews had I not be 12 and somewhat clueless.
