Frank's performances were always incredibly polarizing - the tarred and feathered look really took it up a notch. This song, with industrial percussion courtesy of Einstürzende Neubauten, and it's biting lyrics remain one of the true highlights of the 80's underground music.
Thanks for providing the higher quality audio - I wish I could find the original video footage to see all the detail. RIP Frank Tovey - like the smearing of tar and feathers, you left a truly indelible mark on music!!
I used to club in Toronto in 1983-84 and the club I hung at always played this early in the night when the club was empty and I went early to hear this just cranked wow what a track this song and shriekback blancemange and bahaus oh the days...what happened?
This reminds me circa 1984 of More ultra long cigarettes, off the shoulder Yamamoto inspirired Japanese style blouses, and ultra slim, pencil thin, skirts.
The "it" look at the time was the "Hiroshama" look inspired by the cult of the Japanese desingers of the 80's. Slicked back hair, with the front hair tweaked high. The clothes would be Comme des garcons, or Y. Yamoto inspired. Pencil thin long almost floor length skiirts with off the shoulder blouses.
I was being a dick with my tone when I was told I was being a megalomaniac. I'm a fan of manson but if you look at how many other bands I have listen from the same time as fad gadget you'll see I'm not a believer at all that bands now-days are better... or even that they don't owe a shit-ton to bands they were influences by. I take back my harsh comments also, I'm guilty of dick-sizing by even entertaining an arguement with your first response in the first place. Take it easy buddy.
Okay, so you're not saying anything bad about Tovey, I get that; you're just trying to say that you're tired of people saying music from the good ol' days is better then music now; but here's the deal; you like friggin' Marilyn Manson, this means you can't weigh in on matters of musical preference...EVER!
Bought this on vinyl, new. Saw them in Brighton (I think?) that year. I wish anyone ten years younger than I would watch this and realize why many of us don't bat an eye at Lady Gaga, Marilyn Manson, etc.. We were out gigging when true Firsts were happening. The rest are abit derivative, actually. I remember Iggy Pop dancing like a whirling dervish, wearing a fox tail, belting out "Lust For Life" in the '70's. Saw The Birthday Party on my 18th birthday.. etc...
@SchmedleyDoRight Don't get me wrong, Frank Tovey is a fucking genius, but I get sick of seing elitist ageists coming on to every post talking about how "their" time was so much more influencial/better..." remember when" is the least form of conversation, dude. Just sayin'.
@Jiveturkey68 Do you know what megalomaniac means? How is what I said the least bit megalomanical? Just because you throw around 10 cent words doesn't make you a fucking genius. It makes you look like an idiot to those who actually know the meaning.
Here, for your convenience: 1) A psychopathological condition characterized by delusional fantasies of wealth, power, or omnipotence.
I'm sorry you used the word in the wrong context, but it just shows what a fucking DOLT you are.
@Jiveturkey68 I never said you couldn't, I said it was the "least form of conversation". In other words, you're like everyobody else talking about the "olden days" and it's just another lame dick-sizing post on youtube talking about how it was so much more original and better. It's lame and you know it.
few years ago i have heard a remix of that song live from Dj Hell
it was just before the sunrize and i was so fucking high that i cum instantly without even a eraction and after that i fade out for few seconds and when i wake up everything was golden and sweet
@khorrumg: Well, I don't know if I would say DM ripped off FG; FG is the one that gave DM their start, they use to open for him; and he was involved with the production of their first few albums; he was influential in the bands formation, that's the main reason they have such similar sounds. Saying DM ripped off FG is like saying David Bowie ripped off T. Rex.
@barontang With all due respect...Whilst I appreciate your comment...in all honesty...who cares!!! I mean this music was so, so long ago...its like 30 years old....Its NOT important anymore....maybe to an individual one can lose themselves and transport themselves back to the era...but its so long ago and the memory does somewhat fade....Take care K
@khorrumg well, obviously you care; otherwise you wouldn't be so pissed off and spending so much time defending your contemporary mass-produced crap when people say it pales in comparison to the good stuff.
@barontang Dear 'Baron' errrrr you have obviously had a bad day at the office!!! I am sorry if I ruffled your feathers (pardon the fadgadget pun!!!! Feathers...get it!!!!) but I really did not intend to offend you OR anything of the sort. I really am NOT a big fan of any music......Frank was an artist in every sense of the word...so should be respected for that...may god rest his sould too...Take care
@khorrumg You didn't offend me with your comments about Tovey, you offended me with your poor taste; Marilyn Manson dude, come on? You're either five, or from the Suburbs and your only exposure to this genre of music is your local malls hot topic. I bet you like MSI, NiN, Combichrist and Ramstein too.
@barontang Hey Marilyn Manson....THAT idiot imposter!!!! He is a joke!!! I cant stand that sort of stuff. The only stuff I like now is ....is...well probably Muse....Super massive Blackhole etc....The Uprising...is cool too...yeah thats about it...oh yes....I was a massive Sisters (of Mercy) fan....from the early days.......
@khorrumg Oh wait; i thought you were the Bymox guy; so you're all pissed off because I corrected you about Depeche Mode? Lol, you're just pissed because someone called you out when you opened your trap without knowing wtf you were talking about. Your the kind of idiot who'll say something stupid like "Man, Tones on Tail totally ripped off Love & Rockets" and then when someone says 'Uh..that's stupid; here's why' you get all defensive and say "well who cares anyway, that was so long ago".
@barontang I think you are getting the wrong end of the stick mate??? Im NOT pissed about anything EITHER way...what do I care about DMode....Love & Rockets OR really anyone else for that matter????I mean...I ain't gettin any royalty payments for listening to their music !!!!! Really mate....you seem very highly strung....thats what I cant understand..why get so emotional about such things.......as one gets older one really has less time to contemplate about the meaning of music and stuff....t.c
@MidnightSunOfDark Depeche Mode waren mal ne Vorgruppe von Fad Gadget! Früher in den Achtzigern. : ) Wurden direkt danach wegen ihrer Vorstellung auch unter Vertrag genommen.
