McGuinn's guitar is way too thin and toppy on this track as opposed to the rest of the album, or career for that matter. I think this is a big reason why it doesnt work that well. And I agree with We'll meet again. Easily the worst song they ever did (though Oh Susannha runs a very close second) and possibly the most pretensious song of the 60's. I can only assume McGuinn had heard The Beatles A Taste Of Honey and tried to emulate that style.
I am 26 and I love this band a lot. And I disagree, this is definitely not their worst track. It's one of my favorite songs off that album from the Byrds.
@CornyPoopDude Gee, what's all this talk about which song is the worst track on the album? And that this song or "We'll Meet Again" is their worst track ever, or the worst track on the album? I guess I must be tone-deaf, because I always loved both of these songs. Mr. Tambourine Man is a 5-star album all the way. As for "We'll Meet Again," it's *supposed* to be tongue-in-cheek, as it's the Dr. Who theme song! The Byrds version has great harmony and a bit of snide undercurrent in it too.
@JustAFocus i know it's tongue in cheek, i was just saying if i had to choose a song on the album that would be filler, it would be We'll Meet Again. and I think you mean Dr. Strangelove, not Dr. Who.
I completely disagree with those who criticize this song and the Byrd's version of it.
They put it to a very cool Bo Diddly beat, to begin with. The song has soul and compassion too. Melody, as well. I think this song fits in quite well on their first album, and its lyrics reflect the insecurities of being a young performer comforted by a wiser soul. Very sweet, in my opinion.
I think the Byrds did a great job on this song. I love the way Chris Hillman's bass pattern carries the song along with an unexpected counterpoint to McGuinn's 12 string.
I agree with Gazzymodo -- this sounds so much like the Searchers! I'm from the 60's and loved the Searchers. The Byrd's copied a lot of their style. Never heard a bad tune from either of them! :-)
I cannot agree with you there Captainsoul ! A nice version of Jackid D's song, sounding a bit like the Searchers (if you try not to hear the US accents !)
