oh my, you're so wonderful. i'm really taken aback by how sensitive and caring you are, as well as how insightful and intelligent you sound when you speak.
I don't think you are grasping why homosexuals are offended when 'gay' is used as insult. Yeah you are right the word has taken on a new meaning in the way you use the word 'set', BUT its pretty ignorant to not realize the roots of the insult lies in using the term gay in a derogatory fashion. Furthermore gay has become like synonym for 'lame', so much it is interchangeable....so effectively you are associating that lifestyle choice with being lame, its just ignorance which breeds hate.

This is interesting and well put together but the one thing I have to say is that you can't make people unoffended by an insult. When someone acts stupid and you call them blonde, you may not think anything of it, but if someone keeps teasing someone about being dumb because they're blonde, it can be hurtful. Not everyone can just be unoffended by things. Fact is, people don't use the words independently. Something you identify as should be something to be proud of. You don't respect an insult.
I'm not entirely sure the words are/will be separated, cos people insult each other using more explicit descriptions of homosexuality. I know what you mean by it being insulting though (kinda), because if someone called be a n***er, i'd still be offended even though I know that I'm not black and the term obviously wouldn't apply to me. It's a strange one.
@Rossco242 I think this is due to past usage of the word used to discriminate them. Had people not started to use said word as a word to discriminate and insult another, it would have no meaning whatsoever. People have changed gay to mean something negative, just as many words have been changed to mean something negative as an insult. Simple words used to mean a child without a father or a female dog. Thanks to society taking a negative reaction to this, people assume it is something bad.
OK Tom walk into a room full of black people and explain why you can call them N***** because it's just a word, then upload a video when you realise how much shit you are talking here.
@Rossco242 Dude... The N word is reminiscent of the time when blacks were slaves, considered by white people as lesser humans. "Gay" means happy and/or "is attracted to people of the same gender." You can't even compare those two things.
Also, congratulations. You're a racist homophobe. I hope you beget a gay son who marries a black man.
Gay means happy, so in turn gay people are supposed to be happy, not discriminated on, and scared. and using gay as an insult is like calling someone, a faggot, they are definately not a bundle of stcks. Being said...people are fucking stupid
As much as I love Tom, I have to disagree about the first part. Some words DO mean things even out of context (for example, 'lightbulb'). It's only if a word has more than one meaning (like 'gay') does it become confusing to define out of context.
Right now i just figured that if someone calls me gay then it means the same as a person calling me blond or tall or different kinds of things that i'm not. I would say its not true but not be offended by it.
I'm Bi. Mix up the letters, you get Ib. When people say "You're gay" or "That's so gay" I smile and take no insult. Whenever the situation arises, I say, "That is so straight." Don't be ashamed, LGBTS. Be yourself, and learn when to laugh at yourself.
Tom is so great. I love people who can look at an argument with complete honesty and form the most logical opinion, even if it's not the most simple or popular one.
I kinda like the term "faggy," myself, when it's not being used as a synonym for "homosexual." I think it has certain connotations that are difficult to find in other words. I guess "fruity" kinda works.
Haha My name is Gayla, I used to get so much shit for it when I was younger, But I love my name. And I totally agree with Tom, Its nice for someone to come out and say this stuff. So, thank you Tom.
while i appreciate the sentiment behind this, the use of the word 'gay' as synonymous with 'bad' directly stems from the use of 'gay' as a synonym of 'homosexual'. language does evolve in the manner you mention, but the origin of 'gay' as a generic insult, along the lines of 'that's bad', is rooted in the homosexual connotation of the word. when someone uses 'gay' as a generic insult i feel i have every right to be offended, because it implicitly upholds a homophobic norm of language.
You should try out for the next doctor on Doctor Who : P You seem spontaneous enough. To prove how much "This is gay" fails at an insult. People who call things gay are so gay! Yeah pretty pointless insult isn't it.
I've never focused on the words of this video, just listened to it without focusing, I do think that I took the information in subconsciously as I never get offended ever since I watched it, thank you Mr. Milsom <3
Otally woth tom on this one (as always) its just a stupid word why do words mean so much to some people its like me and a friend where having an argument and she said "shut it you anorexic emo freak" and i just said "ye it jut words so you really think im gonna care" ITS ALL JUST WORDS its not like threatening someone with a knife
@simgraceluca The only meanings that words have are those that society applies to them. Does that make sense? Since society no longer recognizes that gay means happy, it no longer has that meaning. If you used the word "gay" in a "happy" context I doubt many people would recognize what you are meaning to say.
Haha xD true words! XD I'm bi and I get pissed off if people call me straight cause fuck it being gay is fun -D if people are like 'eww you gay' I'm just like 'eww you straight?..' and they walk away baffled because most homophobes are thick and narrow-minded and just need to be educated :'D and I can rant like this which is always fun...
Last time I saw one of your videos, you had purple (I think) hair. You look so much better with your natural color.
Anyway... I think you're one of the most talented and intelligent people I've seen on YouTube.
Would be nice if gay people were actually accepted by everyone, but unfortunately, there's still a large number of people who are afraid of 'gay' people, and that fear, in many, easily turns to intolerance, name calling, and bullying.
I'm reading the rather hateful posts here (that are about as effective as throwing a frootloop at someone's head), and I'd like to say this for no apparent reason:
He may be straight, he may be homosexual, or bisexual, I don't know, but that doesn't change the fact that Tom's a lovely human being, and for that fact alone, he deserves at *least* our respect.
Why am I attempting to defend someone I don't know? Dunno.
Although I completely agree with you (I'm friends with homosexuals, and they are people, contrary to popular belief here in the States), all I was wondering during this video was: "Why the hand gestures?"
Then I thought about it, put myself in your shoes (the ones that never seem to show up in your videos yet I'm assuming are large), and it made sense.
We all know there's nothing wrong with being gay, this video makes him look 'too' defensive towards them though! Just admit to being bi, Tom, then there won't be a problem!
No offense but being straight you don't understand how much it hurts a gay person when gay is used as an insult...and it is...so many people think homosexuality is wrong and so many people commit suicide because of this...so why make it an insult?
@TheNoddii Little background info, he's not straight. Though I'm sure Tom and his long term boyfriend have absolutely no idea what it's like to experience homophobia, ever. /sarcasm.
You idiot! The word "gay" is used as an insult BECAUSE it means homosexual. People have this delusional idea that homosexuality is bad. But no matter how irrelevant that is, it doesn't change the meaning behind the insult. People don't differentiate between gay-homosexual and gay-bad. Maybe just because you aren't in school doesn't mean that bullying around homosexuality isn't still happening.
Gosh... Can a human be insulted if someone calls him human?
In WW II context, meaby, but mostly NO.
If someone calls straight guy gay, he might be insulted, but completly unnecessarily.
Saying "this shoes are gay" is more of constructive criticism, like saying "this shoes make you look like a whore". (No, being a whore is not a bad thing)
But I digres. Basically: If you are insulted by word gay, know that you are the only one who thinks being 'gay' is bad.
I'm not trying to be a hater; all I'm doing is simply expressing my opinion on the Internet. You bring up some good points, and I do understand where you're coming from. Nevertheless, we, as a society, need to prevent the usage of the word "gay" (in correlation to a negative attribute) to prevent trolls and the like from spreading homophobia.
The problem lies within the fact that "haters and ironic liberals" are depicting same-gender sexual orientation in a negative connotation. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it, yet they continuously paint the picture that being gay is a bad thing.
When used in context, words have the power to influence people. Whether they're based on human or online interaction, who's to say that what someone writes online doesn't contain the same feelings and emotions as if they had said it aloud?
I know I'm a tad late to the party, but here are my two cents on the situation:
Why, if you agree that "gay" shouldn't be used as an insult, do you insist it is one? I agree: it SHOULDN'T be. The fact of the matter is, though, that we still perceive it as such. People's words are a projection of their own reality, and should therefore be taken with a grain of salt.
This is the problem with alternative thinking. To you, it might make all the sense in the world but to others it is nonsense. I'm neither agreeing or disagreeing, but acknowledging that all opinions need to be respected, especially when backed with sufficient evidence.
When Tom started talking about how gay simply has two different meanings I was reminded of the Latin word for left: sinister. I used to be sort of hurt as a left hander by this(I have been called a demon as well, but I'm 99% positive he was kidding) but now I just think about how I have all this awesome random knowledge of left-handed-ness and I wouldn't have that knowledge if it wasn't for the fact that people used to for some reason think being left-handed was bad. Sorry this was off topic.
I find it funny when people call me gay... I just say, "I know I'm gay, I'm in a cheerfull mood today!" And they give me a weird look.. sometimes the try to tell me that they meant that I like other girls, to which I reply "I can't be gay! I'm a girl, who is as straight as a ruler!"
If I am called gay, I'm not offended that someone thinks I'm gay, but I find it offensive that people still use the word to describe something bad. It may sound crazy, but some people aren't haters. They are just ignorant, and effective communication helps them to realize what they are really saying.
I think that sometimes,it's not the word, so much as the derogatory sense in which the word is said. Anything said in a derogatory manner will most likely offend.
Also, to be clear, I DON'T use gay as an insult. My point was that just because language seems to be evolving in such a way that the word "gay" means "bad" in certain contexts doesn't mean we have to collectively shrug & concede "well, that's just the way it is, I s'pose".
It's like you're ignoring humanity's ability to make choices re: memetics. The original intent was to accuse someone of being gay because the connotation was that homosexuality = shameful. Just because you feel there's a clear delineation at present doesn't mean a lot of people don't still intend to imply that homosexuality = shameful. I'm not OK with perpetuating that sentiment, even if I personally mean something different by "gay" as an insult. We can collectively choose NOT to do it anymore.
I think most people who call something gay are using it out of its context. Its a bit of a habit. Yes, people shouldnt do it, but i myself do not get offended because people arent thinking homosexual, they are thinking stupid. If people do use it in a homophobic way then its toally wrong, but id hardly say its the cause of homophobic bullying, because people dont say it at gays. Plus which, gay is actually a slang word, that means happy.
It's a shame that people use it as an insult, because they shouldn't be hating, period. But that's their choice, and if they want to be twat's, then let them do that. I agree when Tom says that if your not affected by it, the hater will just shut down. If someone walks up to you and says "You're an effing banana muffin" you wouldn't think much of it, except maybe that the person is a bit mad. It's how you take the words the person has said. Words are just WORDS.
Tom, I'll tell you what happens in the future. You become even cuter than you are now (or then...) you release two albums with a third on it's way, and i fall in love with you. oh, and you dye your hair blue...and it works :)
The same thing happened with the word bastard, origionally it was used to describe someone who was born when their parents wernt married, nowadays no-one cares about that sort of thing and yet the word is still used as an insult and the real 'bastards' dont care. In the future when no-one cares about sexuality anymore then the same thing will hopefully happen with the word gay
i so agree with tom. one of my cousins is gay and he was bullied by homophobics out of his school. in his school, he had a 4.0 adverage, he was pretty popular, he had a lead in his school play, and he was just an overall nice guy, and because of ignorance in the world, people who didnt like him, he just gave up on two of his dreams which i will not disclose. and then i showed him this video.
I was always the type of person who would lecture people about saying something was "gay," but this was a really good argument. I can't bring myself to ever say something is "gay," but you really made me rethink my tendencies to bitch people out about it lol. This was a lovely video and you're adorable. <3
I guess you're saying that internet haters have turned the word 'gay' into a completely different word with a different definition. So it has three meanings now? Happy, homo, and generally sucking in a n00bs perspective.
If you're gay and someone calls you gay why would you be offended? If you're black and someone says you're black why would you be offended again? That's what you are, it's a fact. If someone doesn't say it as a fact "you're gay" and instead says it with venom and disgust only then can you feel insulted, because of their reaction to something you think is normal. For I think being gay or hetero or bi...it's normal, we're all people, you can't change your sexual orientation.
they're not nomal, son.. you haven't fought enough mentally and physically to open up your perceptions.. you don't hear what's going on behind you while you're trying to hold a conversation.. you dont pick up on the suttle insults that make you uncomfortable.. thats a faggot.. and when you understand the difference between power and a faggot, you will be very sorry for your contributions in this video.. you dont

CrankDatLarryBoy 9 months ago 4
The problem lies within the fact that "haters and ironic liberals" are depicting same-gender sexual orientation in a negative connotation. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it, yet they continuously paint the picture that being gay is a bad thing.
When used in context, words have the power to influence people. Whether they're based on human or online interaction, who's to say that what someone writes online doesn't contain the same feelings and emotions as if they had said it aloud?
CrankDatLarryBoy 9 months ago

They are just ignorant, and effective communication helps them to realize what they are really saying.
volkswagenminibus 9 months ago 4
I think that sometimes,it's not the word, so much as the derogatory sense in which the word is said. Anything said in a derogatory manner will most likely offend.

Also, to be clear, I DON'T use gay as an insult. My point was that just because language seems to be evolving in such a way that the word "gay" means "bad" in certain contexts doesn't mean we have to collectively shrug & concede "well, that's just the way it is, I s'pose".
Ginnna 9 months ago
It's like you're ignoring humanity's ability to make choices re: memetics. The original intent was to accuse someone of being gay because the connotation was that homosexuality = shameful. Just because you feel there's a clear delineation at present doesn't mean a lot of people don't still intend to imply that homosexuality = shameful. I'm not OK with perpetuating that sentiment, even if I personally mean something different by "gay" as an insult. We can collectively choose NOT to do it anymore.

Firstly, Im a raging homosexual.
Plus which, gay is actually a slang word, that means happy.

redbullover1 10 months ago 3

15dayfortnight 10 months ago 5
The same thing happened with the word bastard, origionally it was used to describe someone who was born when their parents wernt married, nowadays no-one cares about that sort of thing and yet the word is still used as an insult and the real 'bastards' dont care. In the future when no-one cares about sexuality anymore then the same thing will hopefully happen with the word gay
MarkJBooth 10 months ago
i so agree with tom. one of my cousins is gay and he was bullied by homophobics out of his school. in his school, he had a 4.0 adverage, he was pretty popular, he had a lead in his school play, and he was just an overall nice guy, and because of ignorance in the world, people who didnt like him, he just gave up on two of his dreams which i will not disclose. and then i showed him this video.

PS: Gay mean merry! xD
