  • 1971 ?????????

  • released in 72 according to wiki

  • @tinuszke ....Columbia Records didn't begin using the grey label for their 45s until 1972, so that's correct. Otherwise, Wikipedia is normally not a reliable source because people can add whatever, whenever.

  • This song makes me cry. I love this song so much.

  • I have to sneeze!

  • Bless you!

  • I didn't realize it was about suicide either. When I was a little girl in the 70's, I thought it was a happy song about a mom and child reunion.

My cousin committed suicide last month. It has not been easy....

  • Sorry for your loss NightOwlie, I just lost a friend from the 60's myself. Was looking for this song because we used to play chess to it.

  • Thanks LtJackboot. I am sorry for your loss as well.

  • It's a hell to face the facts of suicide. My brother committed suicide 11 years ago and the question "why" won't go away......

  • hmmm ...

  • Fantastic song - timeless. Don't ever consider suicide people, you're commiting murder to yourself. I lost a very dear friend to it, how I wish Icould have been there for him :-(

  • in new orleans

they have an omlette that features

chicken called "the mother and child reunion"

    nice tribute!

  • Don't go there friend.

  • loooooool livin' in england encourage suicide, nothing else loooooool

  • The grizzly bear version does, fer sure.

  • Thanks a lot for sharing!

  • I love the background harmonies. Very pretty. They make the song.

  • agree with you completely.

  • One of the background singers is Cissy Houston, Whitney's mom.

  • Thanks! I never knew that!

  • David..I almost did not play this, because I knew I would cry and I did!!But that's okay,I'm a softie anyways!!Thank you dear one for thanking of me in this very special way!

    ~BJ~

  • BJ, I think of this often, and pray for your David to return home safe to his Mom's arms soon!! I know you are very proud of him and what he is doing, even though it's hard to let him go to do it. But he is you, in so many ways!! I hope this made you smile some.

    David

He has so much love in his heart, that he is always wanting to give it away!!

Thank you for this David..this did make me smile!!

    ~BJ~

  • Paul Simon wrote this song after he read a platter on a Chinese menu dish called the 'mother and child reunion'... trivia fact

  • Yea, that's right and the dish was chicken and egg, true story.

  • i remember they played this song on the simpsons episode when homer's mom dies, it was sooo sad =(

  • I was about to say that.

  • thanks for the good read people -- sounds alittle para-normal --my message from mum --

  • ALL TIME FAV!

  • April 12 - Operation Reconnect. Be there.

    DO IT!

  • I cried the night they shot Ghandi...

  • Love this song!

  • good..

  • This song was one of the earliest reggae tunes to be implemented by a white musician in the 1970s. Wonderful song. Thanks for sharing.

  • POP IN HK IN 1972!!

  • This was popular on my 7th birthday!(3/25/72)

  • All these comments seem weired. My mosther died in 1975, and a sister in 1990, and a sister today 2-03-08, so I know what this song means to me, and why I am listenig to it today!!!

  • Mighty Paul Simon is tied w/ REo Speedwagon led by Kevin Cronin as greatest bands ever.

    thanks for great video:)

  • I'm sorry to hear this. There's nothing more painful. God keep you.

  • @pavasser Sorry to hear that.

  • u dummie

  • Cool song... and Paul Simon was inspired to write this song after eating at a chinese restaurant and seeing a dish named mother and child reunion

  • If song writers write songs solely for themselves..then why bother to record them? If it was for money alone then most song writers would go down in music history as "one hit wonders"!

  • Some of these comments are close, he was eating in a restaurant when he thought this one up, he was eating chicken and eggs. The bible says not to mix the mother with the child thus the ''Mother and Child Reunion'' is only a motion of the fork away from his mouth(not emotion). Sick and twisted like many of his lyrics are. See if you can figure out what ''Love Me Like a Rock'' was about!

  • what the fuck are you talking about?

  • comment below is to siggersun

  • rozback this is to you... wow sad story I am glad this song helped you and inspired you... I was in 7th gradwe when songf came out... always loved this

  • Actually, he wrote this song after seeing a menu in a chinese restaurant with a dish called the mother and child reunion... he said it inspired him, and that's the truth

  • I lost a child..and the day I was ready to 'cash it all in" to be with my child, this song came on the radio..and stopped me...and that's all I have to say about that.

  • roz, God bless you and your family always. Check out Marc Cohn's "One Safe Place". Hope everything is going well for you. Richard Scott, Cincinnati

  • i think he wrote this about his dog being hit by a car i know the story was sad

  • very like reggae and its great

  • One of my favourites.

  • What a bad sound

    So sorry this is

    a great song

    so sad you only

    have this......

  • The sound isn't THAT bad. There's a funny noise at the beginning, but that's all. I think it's quite good sound considering. Thanks for putting it up!

  • it is a little hard to download a 45 rpm on a computer and then onto youtube..I thank the person for doing this! they did the best they could given the situation! :)

  • WOW, hard to beleive that this song is 37 years young already! I remember this song when I was in Jr. High School. Pauls first big hit without Garfunkle.

  • I didn't know that. Quite a long time before I was born :-S One of my fave Paul Simon solo songs. It reminds me of a melancholy time in Spain a few years ago and I played it ad infinitum. Beautiful in every way...even though the story of its origin is a lot more prosaic than I would have liked (lol)

  • Sniff...WAAH!!! T_T

  • Beatiful song but it makes me miss my mom.

  • I needed to learn the bass line.

  • redrum,paul is dead,twaddle

  • Paul Simon explains it on Snopes...Just type in the song title. He got the song title from a name of a dish off of a menu at a restaurant...

BUT at the same time.. Paul pondered on the feeling of what it would feel like to loose his wife named Peggy. Honest! ;)

  • Yes, those stories as well as the pet dog (his first loss of a loved family member, in his early married life) are accurate, but they only account for the germination of an idea. This beautiful song transcends it's beginnings, and kudos to a musical titan for being able to develop his inspirations into something that now enriches our lives.

  • This song is deranged, as it implies a threatening undertone. It reminds me of something an evil father would say to his child, whose mother had died..."oh, you'll be dead, too, soon, for a mother & child reunion." Paul Simon is a master of insane music, with Satanic, hidden meanings!

  • Really? What's the address of your cult? I wanna join! I don't want Paul Simon to steal my soul! =O

  • Oh, dear. Maybe the reunion is of the person who just passed away with a patiently waiting and loving mother, long gone? And this is a way of speaking of great loss to one left behind, with grace, kindness and compassion?

  • I know, I agree. I guess it just makes me sad, because my mother is deceased! I don't want to die, in order to reunite! My father had often threatened me, so these types of songs play with my head, I suppose. The truth is, you are right. Anything can be interpreted in a myriad of ways, depending on your personal life's experiences. I apologize.

  • No need to apologize :) I had a very rough time some years ago and my grandmother came to me with a small group of my ancestors passed, to show me in the gentlest most blessed way you could imagine that they loved me and were waiting. I am not a religious man so this was a great comfort ...

  • ... My father in law was a WW2 veteran, and when seriously ill was visited by a young soldier in uniform, He asked "are you ready mate?" and Denny replied "No mate, not yet". The digger (Australian soldier) said "No worries mate, we'll be waiting" and left. And of course there is the famous story of Paul McCartney's inspiration for Let it Be about his mum - I wake up in the hours of darkness, mother Mary comes to me, whispering words of wisdom ...

  • ... You need not go anywhere; if these experiences have a grain of reality then your loved ones too are waiting content, happy and serene, and with a totally different concept of time than we understand. Your dad has had his demons, but as one myself I'm sure he loves you. Some people have difficulty expressing this, especially if they too have suffered great hurt. My experience tells me that only those who love and do not judge you will be waiting, and waiting with open arms and pure heart.

  • I've lost my mom too and I refuse to be scared of a journey that my mom already has taken. I'm not going to look for it but when it happens it happens. :)

  • dont be scared babe, your mom is waiting for you, but live your life, i am sure she would not want it any other way.

  • An inspiring way of thought. Nothing to do with religion, I guess

  • this song came on the radio...she had lost a baby 4 yrs before...reunion

  • at 3 an when I jumped into the car after I heard my little sister died

  • What is that even supposed to mean?

  • Aww... That's sad man. Sorry for your loss, even if it was long ago.

  • I love this song.
