This dude is soooooo bad, he's not only singing lead vocals, but he's playing this electric piano parts and the horn parts at the same time...Do any of you know how difficult it is to pull this off?...
Hi Billy this is Jessica. Tried to catch you last summer at the B& O railroad, wanted to talk to you. Talked with your mom though. Look me up on face book. Love your God sis.
The brotha's singin',playing the horn parts & the keyboard parts at the same time. To me this is why funk bands started out big 7 to maybe 12 players & over time got smaller. Everyone was so talented & with so many members they couldn't express their self fully. Plus eveybody wanted his musical touch l on the album, which leads to problems. & bands this size had to be expensive. So everyone wanted to leave & do his own thing.
well, im pretty sure thats why theres no more bands but as many say, many songs today don't have the same magic that the music from the bands had because every member of the band put their own sound and touch into the song, bringing all the sounds together made the song so good and magical, where as today, like, to me, everythang sounds the exact same if it's from the same artist. im not very into all this solo shit goin on today that these new guys doin, in my opinion r&b was way better 50s-80s
Billy, Take em to SCHOOL!!! one of The Baddest keyboards in funk. Bernie Worrell of Parliament is the king. Billy is right along side with him along with Stevie, Billy Preston, Winston Stewart of the Bad Bar-Kays, and Herbie
As far as I'm concerned..Billy Beck is a musical magician. He makes those keys talk, sing, or whatever else he wants them to do. There will never be another like him, EVER. Of course I'm biased...I'm his babygirl.
Billy Beck is the reason the Ohio Players got noticed in the beginning of their career. If anyone can find Pain by the Ohio Players check that out.Billy Beck keep funk alive!!!
You ll need to go to Funk school.Billy was never on the PAIN lp. He was never on any of the Westbound lps. That was Junie Morrison.Billy first lp with OP was SKIN TIGHT from the Mercury label.OP moved from Westbound to Mercury and Junie stayed with Westbound and recorded a few solo lps
Just like i love larry graham's bass and vocal funk skills , this dude here blows me away with his keyboard skills . listen to them horn on the keys , Damn !
Probably. He, Diamond and Sugarfoot took turns on lead vocals on various songs back during their heyday. I think Funky Worm was a song he brought to the band.
Nope. Junie did Funky Worm. Billy wasn't even with the OP back then. He and Diamond made their debutin '74 on the Skin Tight lp, 2 yrs later. Thats when OP left Westbound for Mercury
there aint many keyboardists like that anymore i mean playing the horn lines rhythm the meat of the song and singing? come on man thats funky! thank u billy beck! your contribution to the funk is priceless!
I love this song! it was the first song to really get me into funk, before I realized I loved funk all along. Thank you Grand Theft Auto! But mainly, thank you Ohio Players. Ever since then its been a funk explosion for me, and I'm a much better musician because of it. Don't fight the feeling!

I miss that alot. but my band has the same Ohio nuances. i love that live band environment. go ray brooks. see what Teresa Berger from Hubbard, OH is doing in Florida.
I have been trying for years to get Keyboard Magazine to do something on Mr. Beck but to no avail. However, when I came across this show online I just had to order the dvd. I also purchased a book off ebay from one of the early days Ohio Players and enjoyed it very much, which I think Billy should do soon, I started out playing drums and this one little riff that he does on Skin Tight made me start playing keyboards, get this, at age 40. God Bless!!!!
Billy Beck is one of the most talented people on the Planet. I spent alot of time with him in the mid 90's and what you see on this video isn't anything compared to what I used to see him do on a daily.
vdaddy7, Tell your best friend that he's kept quite a few guys I know VERY happy for over 30 yrs. You tell him we were weened on that Ohioan Funk.....and I'm out of State.

wow man what a video...this is billy beck the keyboard player for the ohio players at the height of their popularity doing "funky worm basically by himself. I love the solo (he still makes it pop even with that garbage casio keyboard), and the horn lines that he's playing plus he's singing all of the parts....what a clip THANK YOU!!!
Thanks for the comment Talkboxmayhem. During this particular TV show, Billy and the band gave a mini-concert and they did Roger Troutman's "Heartbreak" and they used the Talkbox. It was great.
Billy's Response: "Reforming the Ohio Players? Yes. But not exclusively from Youngstown. I don't know if Tank is starting a band with the former lead of "Less Than Zero," but I do agree that tank is a heck of a drummer."
Is it true that Billy is re-forming the Ohio Players in Youngstown? I also herd that the drummer from the Howard & the .5 Band was forming a group with the former lead singer of "Less than Zero" and "Flirt" Eddie Johnson from Akron,Ohio...who is also a relative of the late Roger Troutman. If thats true, that will be one hell of a band 'cause Tank is Youngstown's best drummer and Eddie is a softer side of the late Bobby DeBarge of the group "Switch". The brotha can blow.
Billy's response: "Thank you very much for noticing. When ARP first came out with synthesizers, I was the first in R&B to use them on a major label recording."
I agree, the ARP String Ensemble used on Together and I Want To Be Free blew me away in 1974. I never heard anything like it. Bernie used the same keyboard for Give Up The Funk
Billy Beck is one of my top 5 pianist....and he is classicly trained....although that's an awsome performance, he is wayyyy better than that video shows...he looks kind of funny with that box haircut instead of the long perm he use to have...
Awe man, the original members need to come together for a reunion. Their seperate bands are not cutting it!

Anytime I hear the sound of an ARP I can't help think of Billy Beck...
He didn't deserves a lot more credit for creating the way keyboards were used in R & B ! ! !
