  • There's two older game I'll hold in my heart forever, Privateer and Syndicate Wars. I loved both and enjoyed watching a walkthrough on youtube of Privateer. I'm sad they're not making games like this anymore, where you can choose your path and fly through the endless depths of space.

  • this game is my favorite game of all time!!! i loved every aspect, the story the atmosphere, every planet you land on has a very own atmosphere, the story sucks you in, the gameplay is so much fun, its versatile and you always do something different. the cutscenes were aweseom , the music was aweseom

so it is waaaaaaaaaaaaay better than any more modern game imo

  • Best line up of actors and best acting in a PC game ever.

  • lol so many hollywood actors in this! How much money did they spend on that hahahaha.

  • Wing Commander Privateer 1&2 is and was untouchable in his genre from my eye's.

  • Shame of you for not recommending the game. I think it has ages beautifully and would gladly play it again today if i didn't already knew the plot.

Still, I liked your review. Keep up the good work.

  • the cinemas were neat, with rather eccentric camera work, costumes and sets...but the in-flight experience really didn't compare favorably to WC3, 4, or the original Privateer....

  • I can't believe you give away the ending. Poor form, poor review.

  • man, thank god I'd stopped watching, I have played the game, but I never finished it, dunno why actually, I think I'ts amazing game, and even today, after about 13 years the graphics are not so bad as they are in many younger games... only problem is to run on widows, but its possible on XP, even vista, but I didnt tried on win Seven, but I am almost sure that is possible too, although still we have a dosBox which helps us with oldies...One more thing. The Game is one of the best I've ever played

  • hmmm ive got this game but never played it due to it been dos only, ill think ill place it on my to play (try out) list as i was planning on trying out a wing commander game. Unless there are better WC games then this.

THX for the review but please put up plot spoiler alerts for those like me who might try out this game in the future.

  • Thank you for posting this!!

Does anyone have any tips for modern privateer-like games?

  • Probably X3:Reunion/Terran Conflict by Egosoft. Plot and missions are a bit lacking; however, this is more than made up for by how open the game world is - from light fighters to huge capital ships, (almost) every ship in the game can be piloted, and you can build up and manage your own network of stations and fleets. The graphics are also astounding.

The only big negative is the controls, forcing you to scroll and click through layer upon layer of menu screens for the most basic infos.

  • I know its been awhile but what the hell other folk can use it. X2 (which is better imo) and the 2 X3, Star shatter, Evocron, theres a mmo called jumpgate evolution older but good games are Tachyon, Darkstar one, Klingon Academy (has tons of video footage from Startrek 5 movie cast) I war 2, I highly recomend Starlancer & Freelancer (Freelancer uses point and click like Eve Online (Eve rocks))For the PS1 play Colony/ Navy Wars

Plus Check out Freespace 2 its free and has loads of mods

  • I always love seeing Christopher Walken in Privateer 2. "I need you to deliver these MAAAASSSSSSSSDRIIIIIIVVVVAAHHHHSSS"

  • Privateer 2 was a great game, a pretty poor review that disuades people from plaing it saying the payoff is to small. Perhaps for todays WOW crown that requires instant gratification that's true, but for anyone with a little patience and a love for a good mystery this game can't be beat. I have pleyed it front to back several times and always love it, even today.

  • this was one of my favorite games ever!!! they dont make games like them anymore and thats just sad!

  • This was the first game my Dad ever introduced me to, I'd sit on his lap and hit the J button when we traveled. Not much interest as a girl in space fighters, but it was the characters and story that hooked me. I got to playing it when I was older, though a bug in the game meant I couldn't get one plot trigger. I wanted to play again when I got a new PC, but my PC ran the game too fast and I couldn't shoot anything down, so never saw the ending. The review has merits, but I agree -- TOO harsh.

  • This is ia poor review... this was a good game.

To win this game you need the following

    Flight stick

Super Quest lazers (tri-blater or something)

You need 2 small torpetos and 2 anti shield missles. You launch a torp and count a few secs then lunch and anti-shield. One strips the shield the other destroys the capitial ship.

If you could not figure that out...you cant play the game right

  • Awesome game, poor review.

  • Privateer remains one of the most deep, compelling, satisfying and enjoyable games I have ever played after 12 years. I unfortuntely cannot get the game to run on Vista, but watching this review brings back a lot of fond memories. Thanks for posting this.

  • Thanks for posting this dude.
