For one, many bands will loose quality by getting mainstream, either it's the will of the managers or they themselves try to make music that suits more people, even if they don't even realize it themselves. Or they could get "worse" by themselves, which suits more people. The other side is that if a band someone's a fan of goes mainstream, they already judge them more negative, which automatically makes their work seem worse. Sorry for my english.
