Mogwai are Post Rock more than anything else, this could not be further from that. Another example of Post Rock would be Godspeed! You Black Emperor or Maybeshewill (from leicester) who seem to be supporting them in October (may see them for that reason).
But if it comes to Post Rock rather than instrumental (often they're together but not always) Scotland's best then Canada.
@spazabarri Hey now, MOGWAI is great at what they do..just cuz theyre both instrumental doesnt mean theyre are in the same genre. different bands, both good.
@spazabarri Toe = Blend of Math and Post Rock, Mouse On The Keys = Nu-Jazz, Mogwai = Post-Rock, unjustifibale to say that they don't come close, they're in different areas of music :P
got to try anyways! For an interest check out from my videos our band Dali and its song Woods. Its an old live demo made in rush for an interview we had. Just when we got things rolling our band member had to go to army and everyone had stuff going here and there. even though the quality it gives a hint of the bands hard and somewhat simple sound. now were among the living again and will soon blow the hell off the earth
I wish most Americans were open-minded enough to have an ear for more than intro-verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus single artist bullshit. That way I wouldnt have to look for this stuff on the internet.
@SnakeTaint I TOETALLY AGREE WITH YOU i have my MP3 full with all of their songs my fav is Kodoku no Hatsumei! I was even willing to pay 15.50$ for them!
Dudes, it's math rock, plain and simple. This is the same type of shit that Tera Melos, Hella, Giraffes? Giraffes! This Town Needs Guns, Don Caballero, and quite a few more play. It's amazing stuff, and I am forever in love with how underrated it is. This genre is the best kept secret of music. The less that know, the better.
@waffles032 Totally right Dude. It's like the most mysterious and underated music genre ever, but if it were mainstream, there will be no charm to it. Everything that has this mathsy feeling to it, even in metal with bands like Animals As Leaders, Ghengis Tron, Hunab Ku ect... are probably the most complete and mature bands ever.
@gonzopoet00 Thank's dude =) I'm gonna check out your brother's band ! It's right that there's some young bands that are really talented those days =] If you like LITE, you will probably enjoy a band called "Toe" they're from japan too and play a really cheerfull music with a lot of energy. worth check out =)
@kurobass This is only one of their songs, many others shift constantly, and the term 'math rock' didn't even originally come from how 'mathematic' the songs sounded anyway. Either way, it's more useful to say this is math rock than to split hairs even further... and even then, it's only loose description. Sounds great either way.
@drunkenXirishman I did and it is in 3. You cannot count 5 and have it sync with the pattern anywhere in the song. You could put it in 6 but I'm pretty sure it's in 3 with two bar repetition since the picked pattern repeats after 3 with a slight change. Then again what do I know, I'm only a classically trained bassist.
@watfhi i tried my best to count it in 5.. but no can do. It's positively in 3/4. Well, i'm not the best drummer in the world but yeah.. it's in 3 not in 5...
I thought it was scientist rock...oh thats The Minutemen...i mean physical education rock...or...who fuckin cares, just play. Shit man why do all the amature musician have to classify everything. Spend more time playing and less time shelving and maybe when you grow up you can have your own video too. That would be neato.
Don't be stupid. Things fit into categories no matter what you say. If they didn't then you could put music from bands like Creed and Nickleback side by side with them - which would be absurd.
@StarvingSound I don't really think that makes sense. Why would we put them "side by side", if we weren't classifying the bands in the first place? I think hvysoul17 has it right. A lot of people are hesitant to listen to a type of music because it's branded a certain way, when in reality, those labels probably aren't even correct. More listening, less fussing over the genre.
Yeah, this is definitely math rock. listen to the poly rhythms in the guitars and bass. and this is not the best song to judge their genre by. the rest of this album, Phantasia, is math rock out the ass.
This is not math rock. This song stays in 6/4 the entire way through. It's an odd time signature for 'western' popular music but math rock is many time signatures within the course of a track, constantly alternating and changing.
Breadwinner, Drive Like Jehu, Don Caballero etc. It might be very complex, but trust me, this isn't math rock. I'm not saying I don't like this, LITE are one of my favourite bands. And at least it's not as ridiculous as when people call Foals math rock
I can't recognize time signatures and stuff like that so I wouldn't know how to recognize a math rock band unless someone tells me. But LITE is the best.
Oh, I checked out those bands....Not really my kind of thing....They may have intermittent time signatures but I didn't enjoy them much. Don't know what's wrong with me...
@gabe25591 that is not all what math rock is, that is a part which a lot of math rock bands have, but it is not essential to be math rock. i think this is a good definition "Math Rock is a relatively new sub-genre of rock music, characterized by complex, atypical rhythms (often including irregular stopping and starting), frequent use of irregular time-signatures, and dissonant, angular guitars"
It doesn't have to be. It's kind of ridiculous trying to classify a band as math rock, as any music that employs heavy use of syncopation that sounds "odd" to the ear is considered math rock, but what's considered odd is different to everybody. It doesn't have to involve crazy changes.
god, thats good... these guys sound alot like a speeded up version of some of Akira Yamaoka's works... well, his rock stuff anyways... i might have to look up some more, thats pretty intense...
Math rock is an unpredictable mix of guitar experimenting. It can add on rhythms or beats or switch them up altogether, you never know. So yes, it is very intriguing
Hmm...I've always considered math and music two totally different things. I was imagining the band members running melodies through a finite element analysis model and playing the outcome. LOL.
